My 10 week tour of Europe!

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon December 9th 2009

Lyon We went to Lyon and stayed with a friend who had studied abroad at UCLA. He (Concord was his ultimate nickname) and his family were great hosts and we had an awesome weekend in Lyon. Concord took us to see the old Roman ampitheater, the most famuos churches, the opera, the Palace of Justice and town plazas. Many of the city's buildings are also lit up at night and it is a beautiful city. Vienne Concord teaches at a highschool in Vienne, so Katie, Atari and I went on a walking tour of the city while he was at the school. There are round metal markers in the sidewalk that guide you through the small town to the different places. There's a really cool Roman temple in the middle of the city. There was also ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris December 8th 2009

Paris Paris was fantastic. We actually were there two different times because we went to Lyon for the weekend in the middle of our time there. It really is a beautiful city... but so big! I need more time there to see it all. Walking Tour This was my favorite walking tour of the trip (and we went on a lot!) because our guide was so fantastic. She's an Australian studying in Paris and gave us a hilarious tour. I can't remember laughing and learning so much on a tour. We went to Notre Dame, the Latin quarter, Pont Neuf, the Louvre, the Royal Palace & gardens, the grand and petit palaces and even more. Definitely not a lack of things to see here. Eiffel Tower After the tour, we headed over to see the eiffel ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Saint-Raphael » Brugge December 2nd 2009

Bruges Walk through town Katie and I spent our first day in Bruges exploring the small city. We went into the basement of the Crown plaza to see the ruins of an ancient church. Then we went to a church that claims to hold some of Jesus's blood. We were there for some ceremony for they take it from it's special spot on an alter to another place on the pulpit so people can touch it and pray. It was interesting to see, but the whole thing seemed a little whacky to me. After the church, we walked through Markt, the main square, but there wasn't much activity. Next, we headed to the other edge of town and walked through the park along the river. We walked along to the gate over the river that was ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam December 2nd 2009

Amsterdam Amsterdam was a super quick trip. We were going to book an extra night when we arrived, but were glad we decided not to after seeing our room. This was probably my least favorite hostel because it was incredibly cramped and dirty. As an added bonus, there were two girls in our room who were very inconsiderate considering they were sharing a tiny room with 6 other people. Anne Frank House This is really the only place we went worth mentioning. The building were Anne Frank hid during the beginning of the Holocaust with her family and some other people has been turned into a fantastic museum. It´s hard to believe how long they were in hiding in such a small space. They have the original diary and that was really neat to see too. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin November 30th 2009

Berlin The Presidential Suite When we discovered we would be in Berlin around the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, we booked our hostel right away. Good thing because a lot of the were already full. We ended up booking at Singer109 which looked more like a nice hotel. For some reason, the booking didn't work correctly through the hostel website and only booked 1 spot for one of the nights in the middle of our stay. After a few emails back and forth, they moved us into the presidential suite of the hostel for the same price. We had our own room with one queen and one twin bed, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen area and a TV (we watched part of Free Willy in German). It was SO nice! Walking Tour We ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague November 30th 2009

Prague We had heard so many amazing things about Prague from other people we met on the trip, we had really high expectations. Fortunately, we weren't let down, Walking Tour Our guide was a little kooky, but overall, this was another great free tour. We saw so much! We started in Old Town Square and saw the astronomical clock, Jan Hus statue and a couple churches. We also went to the cubism museum, the Czech national bank, Wencelas Square, Estates theater (where Mozart first performed or something). After a lunch break, we saw the Jewish quarter including the cemetery and 3 different synagogues. We also saw the Rudolfinum (Czech Philharmonic) and Charles Bridge. After the tour, we walked over to the John Lennon wall and then up to the Castle. The castle district is huge and ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest November 30th 2009

Budapest Katie and I loved it here. We actually extended our stay an extra night because after the first day, we decided there was just too much to see and do before we left. Thermal Baths The first thing we did when we got to Budapest (after dropping out stuff at the hostel and talking with the awesome staff) was head to the thermal baths. The Gellert thermal baths were just across the river from us and are half off on Thursdays. Since it was Thursday, we decided it couldn wait. We grabbed our suits (though not necessary in most of the rooms) and finally found the pools after a maze through the building (it's also a hotel). There were several different pools, including a wave pool that I never managed to find. There was a ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna November 16th 2009

Vienna Katie and I were actually a little disappointed with our stay in Vienna. We kept hearing such awesome things about it, so we booked 3 nights at our hostel there. Unfortunately, Katie got bed bugs and we weren't really sure how to fill up our 3 days in the city. We went on a long walk and saw a lot of the museums, but we didn't have a guide and often didn't know what we were looking at. Regardless, a few highlights... Schönbrunn Palace As usual, we didn't actually pay to go inside and see the royal residences. However, the palace is cool from the outside and the gardens were beautiful. It's nice to finally be able to say to check it out on facebook... my photos are finally up! Neat fountains and beautiful trees, ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg November 8th 2009

Salzberg After dropping our bags off at the hostel, we had a quick lunch at My Indigo. We planned to walk around a bit after, but we were feeling pretty cold and tired and decided to stop for coffee first. We went to a little cafe and had the cutest coffees! Mine had a Jewish star in cocoa powder on the foam and Katie's had a star. We shared some Sacher Torte and it was DELICIOUS! After that, we walked for several hours all over. Salzberg is a really pretty city. We went to the Mirabel gardens (part of which was in the Sound of Music!) and then walked up to look over the city. We ended up walking on a beautiful path full of autumn colors with viewpoints every once in a while of the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich November 8th 2009

Munchen New Munich Walking Tour Our guide for the tour wasn't phenomenal, but she did show us the sights of Munich. We started at Marienplatz and watched the much over-rated Glockenspiel. We saw some pretty churches and our guide told us an interesting legend about the devil stomping his foot in one of them. We also saw the New Synagogue, the old and new town halls and the royal residences. Finally, we stopped by Hofbrauhaus, a large brewery with a beer garden, but we didn't get a chance to grab some food or drinks. Don't worry, I made it back there later. Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Tour This experience was not an enjoyable one of course, but definitely one I would recommend. We took a guided tour of the camp with a FANTASTIC guide. She was ... read more
