We awoke on our final day on the east coast. Erin and Dennis were staying one additional day and had tickets to see “Jersey Boys” that night. It’s a show that we’d enjoyed, and Sharon had seen it several times already in Ohio and Las Vegas; but, just not on Broadway. Since we were only a few buildings away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral Erin and Sharon had wanted to attend mass there before we left. Their web site indicated they had music at 7, mass at 7:30 and 8:00 with a few more following. So they decided to go to the 7:30 mass but when we arrived early just after 7 am (it really was close to the hotel) a mass had just started with music (so we figured out when they said music they meant ... read more

We slept well and the four of us went out in our quest for Dunkin Donuts. We’d been foiled in our quest for these stateside treats in Montreal when the Dunkin Donuts in the underground mall had not been open that early on a weekend morning, and we wound up being foiled again at the end of our trip in New York. We simply couldn’t find it this time. We strolled by the outdoor filming of a segment of “The Today Show” and one guy strolled up to us, appearing to be associated with the show, and offering a cold weather wool cap to Sharon “just because…” Well, it turned out that he wasn’t associated with the show at all and was panhandling money for some veteran’s charity. We finally gave up on the Dunkin Donuts ... read more

We had an early morning arrival scheduled. I’d heard that we were to pass the Statue of Liberty around 7 in the morning and pass under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge about an hour before that. I decided to rise early and see our sea entry into New York harbor. I was showered, changed into my disembarking clothes and up in the Crow’s Nest by 5 AM. Sharon chose to sleep. I took the Laptop and decided to get as caught up on the blog as I could. I had my choice of seating in the darkened lounge, maybe one other person was already there. I chose a forward-looking chair with a small table for the laptop. I had the notes from yesterday’s trivia with me, and I updated some of the highlights. I’d forgotten to mention ... read more

We took our time getting out of bed, headed to the Lido as has been our norm. I grabbed a couple of those petite bowls of Swiss muesli and Sharon had some French Toast. It was past nine before we met up with Erin and Dennis in the atrium of the lower promenade that we shared with them; only, we were forward near the bow and they were aft looking backwards off the stern. This gave them a longer walk to the forward atrium. It took a bit of a wait catching an elevator down to the A-Deck to catch a tender. The line was a confused jumble of people heading out the starboard side. Most people in line had their color coded tender tickets; which, they needed to have previously requested. Only after all of ... read more

Sunday morning mass was at 8 AM this morning, being a “Sea Day” and mandatory because both Sharon and Erin had decided to skip the Vigil Mass the evening before so that they could help the team with its Team Trivia Travails. Look at how well that worked out for us. After mass we went to the Dining Room for our second sit-down breakfast of the cruise. I again ordered the vegetarian frittata with sausage and hash browns. Sharon ordered her old standby American breakfast. Our day was off to a nice relaxing leisurely start; but, I still had a couple of days of blogging to catch up on. I’d been sleeping in more than I have on previous trips, and I really need a sea day now and then to catch up on the blog. ... read more

We arrived in Boston and again the Rain Gods appeared to be threatening, but at least the pervasive fog of Bar Harbor had relented. I had some more Swiss muesli for breakfast, and Sharon had some French Toast. We were seated in a sort of enclosed enclave of the Lido, I’m not sure but that might be where those dining in the Canaletto dine. There was one gentleman seated by himself at the window when the steward asked him if he could get him anything else, after having poured him some hot coffee. “Well yes he said, “I would like one of those croissants; but not from this side because someone was going through and touching all of them, you’ll have to go around to the far side.” And the steward obligingly started off to do ... read more

The CD Michael has done quite well with those Greek Weather Gods of his that he seems to be on such good terms with. A couple of his “Nifty Iffy” hedges have actually panned out into beautiful days; or, at least for what passes for beautiful days for a New England autumn afternoon. So his “Fifty Fifty (Nifty Iffy)” projection for today at least had the promise of a lobster roll for me! But the bleakness of the chilly white soup outside our obstructed view was not reassuring, and atop in the Lido our worst fears were confirmed. At first we could see a second cruise ship, smaller than the Rotterdam also at anchor in the bay off our starboard stern. Just thought that I’d through a few nautical terms in for you so you may ... read more

This morning Sharon and I rushed up to the Lido for breakfast. I got a couple of their modernistic demitasse cups of Swiss Muesli. Sharon had the French Toast. She had looked for a tour for us to take out to Peggy’s Cove, but was unable to come to a consensus with Erin and Dennis. Dennis wanted to see the museum and the Citadel. We finally decided just to “wing it” on shore. We passed a string of taxis to make our way to the HOHO; but, determined that they don’t get out to Peggy’s Cove. The tour price for Peggy’s Cove was about $100 per person (US dollars) and the taxi ride out there was $150 (Canadian) for 3 hours. That’s what we decided to do after verifying that the cab driver would accept a ... read more

I think every cruise director tells the story of booking 3 acts that must embark in Sydney Nova Scotia, and receiving a text message from the Captain that only 2 have gotten onboard as they’re about to remove the gangway. Michael told his version of the story last night at the show. A frantic cell phone call to the third act confirmed that the act was right where he was supposed to be, on the pier looking for the ship. The act couldn’t find the ship and Michael couldn’t see anyone on the pier, so he asked his booking to describe what he could see… After all, Sydney Nova Scotia isn’t all that big; maybe, a dozen houses or so. He started by saying, “Well, across the harbor I see the Opera House…” You get the ... read more

This morning we returned to the “Land of Anne of Green Gables”. I made sure a spelled “Anne” with an “E” because it is “Shirley” the way that she would have wanted it; and, certainly the way that Sharon would have insisted on it. Once upon a time when she was a “Casey”, “Anne” (with an “E”) was her middle name. To this day she insists that that is the proper spelling. We didn’t rise in time to check out the magnificent red soil on the shores of Prince Edward Island. We did catch breakfast in the Lido and I settled for scrambled eggs and patty sausage because that was the quickest. I’ll have to search for the muesli when I have the time to walk all around the Lido. Sharon partook of a waffle. Back ... read more
