We awoke without worries for our first sea day, sailing the Saint Lawrence River from Montreal to Quebec City. Our departure from Quebec City had been delayed due to river traffic. Sharon and Erin went to mass, and I got up more slowly. Well maybe I had some worries, falling a bit behind on the blog. The four of us dined in La Fontaine Dining Room for breakfast. The first thing we noticed was the menu had changed. And they’d spiced up the Frittata to my liking, adding asparagus and red pepper flakes. I also had a bowl of muesli. Sharon went with her old standby, “The American Breakfast”. Erin enjoyed her waffles. Dennis started with the creamed wheat, and he confirmed it had no lumps to the two ladies seated at our table. We awoke after completion of our first leg on our journey to New York City. Our taxi cab driver for our tour around Montreal had said that just two weeks earlier it had still been warm in Canada, and the weather had suddenly turned cold. This was great news for leaf peepers doing a cruise at this time. Sharon had tried to do some pre-trip research and concluded that the weather had already changed and that we might be lucky to catch the tail-end of the color changing season. But as our fortune would have it, this last part of October cruise might be just perfect. The Cruise Director Michael had hinted as much last night during his intro to the Show. So we had high hopes as we woke a bit late. We were getting ... read more

We walked to the Underground Mall near where we’d eaten the day before. It was Saturday morning and early and only a few vendors were open in the massive underground labyrinth. Dennis said that there were three such mall around Montreal, and the convenience of such shopping protected from the weather certainly made sense to us. We snaked through a couple twisting aisles and made it to the Dunkin Donuts which appeared ominously closed, or “Ferme” as one might see in Montreal. We’d spotted a deli near our entrance that had been open and found our way back to it. Sharon, Erin and Dennis each had a chocolate croissant, which appeared to have much more chocolate that they would likely get up on the Lido for breakfast. I tried a “Mokka Cookie” and I think it ... read more

I slept a bit better than Sharon who complained of sirens and noises and sounds of a bustling city; and, I’m awakened to “What is that moving outside our window?” Two skyscrapers are rising from below. One is already above our 28thfloor level; but, the nearest is well below us. A massive yellow crane is perched above the top of each, and the distant one had just rotated its upper section to be visible through are window. So no Sharon, it was not a big bird to answer her next question. We showered and did our daily Sudoku Challenge using the “Enjoy Sudoku” app on our smart phones. We do both the daily “Intricate” and “Difficult” puzzles; although we only count the intricate as the challenge on weekdays and the difficult on weekends. The other is ... read more

We spent the last few minutes trying to remember all of those last minute things to do when leaving the house: Turning off lights, leaving some on, shutting off water to the water purifier, then shutting off water to the inside house plumbing, unplugging the pump that recirculates the hot water, disposing of perishables, and as luck would have it, today is also “trash day”. Our neighbors graciously offered to shuttle us to the airport. She needed to take her car in for servicing near the airport anyway, and her son picked us up, and then picked up his mother who had just finished dropping off her car. We were thankful that we’d padded our commute time when we hit stop-and-stop traffic on the loop, winding down to one lane before everyone was forced to exit. ... read more

Can it really be a year since we were on our 5-year anniversary cruise and preparing to move into our new Las Vegas home after the cruise. We did an eleven-day cruise in the Caribbean and Panama in February for my mother’s 85th birthday; but, that was well over half-a-year ago and Sharon is in total “Cruise-Withdrawal” by now. My mother has also since moved to “The Home” also in Las Vegas (not “Our Home”), a very nice “Independent Living Resort” that is as Sharon says, “close to us, but not too close”. She laughs and agrees when we tease her that it's just like a cruise ship since she can leave her "cabin" to go down for meals, or entertainment, activities, movies etc. She won’t be joining us on this cruise, but heck, she’d grown ... read more

After nearly two weeks on the go it’s an adjustment to catch your breath and realize that you’re back in the U.S.A. We awoke to the port sounds of Fort Lauderdale and made our way up to the Lido for a quick breakfast. The porters had taken our luggage left in the hall the night before, nicely marked with our port-to-destination-airport transfers which meant that we wouldn’t need to handle them or check them in or even see them before we searched for them in the baggage claim at LAX. Sharon and I have used this option on our last couple of cruises, and it is definitely the way to go. The mood in the Lido was somewhat solemn, and not the cheery energized buzzing that you normally are confronted with. Somewhat annoying were the people ... read more

On our final “Sea Day” we again made our way to the Vista Dining Room for breakfast where an “Italiano Frittata” was calling for me. Do I have to elaborate on the lack of culinary imagination of my travelling companions? Again, with the American breakfast, eggs well scrambled and bacon well done. At least in the dining room it’s the dining room stewards that get to deal with my mother who has suddenly become quite vocal in telling people exactly how she wants things. It has been an amazing transformation to watch in less than two weeks. Today’s itinerary offered us one final chance to win at bingo, this time enticing us with a possible $25,000 jackpot if we get bingo on the last card in 46 calls or less. Today is my mother’s birthday, the ... read more

I’d gotten up early and was working on the blog. The previous two days hadn’t given us much of a chance to blog, and the internet has been flaky. And I must add, that we’ve been tardy at posting these final days, but hope to finish them off; albeit, a couple of weeks late. Sharon went to mass, noting that until sailing without a priest, she hadn’t realized how much she missed having this daily service. We went to the dining room for breakfast, where I opted for the eggs Benedict. My mom and Sharon are completely unimaginative, choosing again the American Breakfast with scrambled eggs. We then made our way to the Exploration Café and Lounge for our daily Sudoku challenge. My mother is getting much better and actually finished the Easy Puzzle before Sharon ... read more

We got to sleep an hour later due to our later than planned departure from Colon, Panama. We’ve been experiencing extremely poor to horrid internet service for the past couple of days and our ability to do anything online has been almost completely stymied, especially posting the blog or uploading images. We went to the Lido for breakfast and my mother asked Sharon to get her some waffles. My mother added, “Waffles with syrup, and apples on the side with no syrup.” I got her oatmeal and banana, and sometimes wonder at the quantity of food my mother packs away in her petite frame. I got an omelette with jalapeños, onions, ham, bacon, cream and cheddar cheeses and added salsa to it. It was quite good with some white toast. Sharon also had a waffle. Due ... read more
