The plan was to take Shirley to attend a Sunday Mass at the small Catholic Church on Rockaway Beach where she’d been a regular parishioner when she’d lived on the coast and also where they had the funeral for Sharon’s Dad; and, then to proceed back into Tillamook and have breakfast at the Pancake House. We’d all eaten there before and enjoyed its homey small town atmosphere. There was the option of going to the first mass at 8:30 and follow that with breakfast; or, to eat first and then attend the second service. We got up early enough to go with the first option. It was a bit of a drive to get out to the church, and already people were arriving at the church; still, we were able to get a primo parking space ... read more

The Pacific Shore has a later sunrise than we experience in Vegas being farther east and in the same time zone. Sharon got up more than once during the night to check on her mom downstairs. And every new noise seemed to spawn the automatic “What was that?” How am I supposed to know what that was? After all, I was sound asleep. We went to a local diner for breakfast; but, four of its five tables were already full, and the fifth was a tiny table for two. The waitress estimated a twenty-minute wait, with no place to wait and especially nowhere for Sharon’s Mother to sit. There was another café just around the bend; but, we were up for a coastal drive and drove a few miles south on 101. The GPS said that ... read more

Our Alaskan Adventure begins with a belated Mother’s Day Weekend on the coast of Oregon. Our neighbor showed up to pick us up, a few minutes early; but, just as we’d brought our bags to the curb. She had warned us that she’d taken the “Multi-Gen” room in her house as her room, both because the master bedroom was much too big to suit her (reading between the lines means it was much too big of a job to clean to suit her) and besides, her room at the front of the house allows her to be the Mrs. Kravitz of the neighborhood. She’d called just after our alarm awoke us and I answered asking if this was our Uber driver confirming our pickup. We got to the airport, quickly dropped off our checked bags breezed ... read more

It has been two years since we were in Las Vegas to pick out all of the options for our new home in just three days before heading for our biennial Alaska Cruise. Now we’re enjoying that home on the eve of our departure to what awaits us to the north. The heat has yet to settle in as it had last year at this time, and we’ve enjoying temperatures in the 70’s and occasionally 80s for almost 2 months (well there was one day at 99). Projections predict the mercury should be well into the 90’s next week, so maybe Sharon’s plans to escape what she can of the summer heat here may be coming to fruition in a well-executed plan. Sharon has copiously documented every last detail of our itinerary, down to who get ... read more

Although we faced dreadful heat and humidity, and our timeshare had no air conditioning, after four nights here it makes perfect sense. Only that first day and night was a problem, and we later learned that the timeshare owners preferred to keep their maintenance costs low and not have heating or air conditioning, knowing that it might cause some comfort issues three or four days per year. How lucky we were to hit one of those days! The normal trade winds keep things pleasant year-round. On the way to dinner the night before we got to see some of the surrounding area, very rural and very laid back. We crossed a one-lane bridge, and the sign advised that five to seven cars should cross in one direction, before changing for cars to go the other way, ... read more

On the morning of our final full day in Hawaii we woke with all of the expectations that the remaining portion of our trip had been carefully orchestrated. Sharon had planned our itinerary down to the minute, with travel times first to Ono Char Burgers for lunch, then to Wailua Falls, from there up the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, stopping on the return route at one of the attractive sandy beaches that we’d driven by on the coast; but, this was all before she awoke with a bloody nose. While it was never a gushing uncontrollable bloody nose, it was somewhat relentless. We put our plans on hold, I worked on the blog. I had forgotten all about our morning meeting with the timeshare folks to get our “complimentary update” which we had agreed to attend ... read more

Despite all of the advanced scheduling that went into planning “My Big Day”, it actually began with a very, very lazy morning, waking up to the chilling hum of the overhead fan and hoping that I’d had the foresight to pack something green. Originally the trip had been planned so that it would include both Sharon’s birthday and mine as well. We’d hoped for a sunset dinner cruise; but, managed a last-minute catamaran whale watch outing that was scheduled to last two-hours. At this point in our vacation we didn’t want to risk anymore “three-hour-tours”. I searched on-line but couldn’t find any restaurants showing that they served “fish-and-chips”. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be a bummer having “My Big Day” fall on a Friday during Lent! We’d seen plenty of restaurants in the concierge’s ... read more

About midnight the outside temperature had come down enough for us to feel comfortable with fans going and open windows providing ample air flow. Sharon had checked again with the resort’s list of amenities, and A/C was not among them. She’d talked to the window-seat person next to us on our flight from Lihue about things to do/see in Kauai (where she lives). The Lighthouse had come up as a place to visit, where her parents had enjoyed seeing some rare birds just a few weeks earlier. And of course “The Grand Canyon of Hawaii”. We’d seen the turn-off to the lighthouse on our way to the timeshare; so, being close to us it was definitely on our list of places to visit. Also on our “To-Do” list was to see the Fern Grotto. We took ... read more

We’d set our alarm for six in the morning. Sharon had moved the last of our laundry from the dryer at midnight; but, I was asleep long before that. I showered, folded my laundry and packed everything into cubes, and from there fit everything into my suitcase and carryon. My suitcase now was two pounds heavier; but, at 45 pounds I was still golden. Sharon must have rearranged her luggage because she came in at 46 pounds; but, still under the 50 pound limit. We filled up the tank on our way to the airport. Check-in was really easy at the Fox rental car; and, to make things better the van was already there and we were on our way without a hitch. With all of the trouble and ordeals, and lengthy process or renting the ... read more

We finally had a day to sleep in and to wake up when our bodies told us that it was time to rise and shine. Outside our balcony view of the Pacific waters between Maui and Molokai the Pacific is a scant two hundred feet deep, a depth that is favorable to the humpback whale during their mating season. The waters are warm and here they have no predators. The orcas favor deeper waters, so when it is time for them to migrate back to Alaskan waters for feeding; then, they will face perils. That is one of the reasons the “escorts” who accompany a mother and calf are important. We were told that the escort is seldom the father. This morning we both were able to spot humpbacks breaching in the distance, making wide unmistakable ... read more
