Sharon went off to mass, and is really enjoying the priest who hopes to get a gig later this year on the Konigsdam on the cruise that we’ll also be taking in Northern Europe. Sharon returned to tell me that it was a special mass. Today was the 42ndanniversary of the priest’s ordination along with being the Feast of the Visitation. He told them a story about his mother who used to write him a poem every year for this anniversary. He said the poems were pretty bad in a funny way as she tried to rhyme things. When she died in 2006 he wasn’t sure how he would spend his future anniversaries and shortly before the one the next year he decided he’d spend it reading thru the 30+ years of poems and crying. We rose with some port sounds outside, and took our time making our way to the Lido where throngs of people were already waiting in long lines at their favorite stations, waiting for Eggs Benedict, or Waffles, or Scrambled/Fried Eggs, or Omelets; and, others were just trying to squeeze between people in line to get some dried cereal, pastries, yogurt, juice or other items not requiring a substantial wait. More than a couple people in my Omelet line gave up and settled for a Danish instead. Sharon waited in the waffle line, and then asked for a few chocolate chips and the server must have poured half a pound of chocolate onto her waffle. We ate outside by the pool and had a wonderful view of the town and hills rising to snowcapped peaks. Sharon couldn’t ... read more

Sharon went to mass and enjoyed the priest, who she believes to be recently retired. This is his first cruise, taking the leg up and the following leg back to Vancouver. We went to the dining room for breakfast and ate with two other couples. I had my two favorites Swiss Mueslie and the Frittata. Sharon had scrambled eggs and bacon. Outside we could see that we were sailing foggy seas, and the crystal clear sailing day Sharon enjoyed in 1986 sailing these waters weren’t going to be revisited today. She recalled seeing the many seaside logging operations and mills in a very rural setting that really was like turning the page back one hundred years. We stopped by the Exploration Lounge and were pleased to see that they had Sudoku puzzles ready for us. We ... read more

I’ve got this ear-worm ringing through my head, I’m thinking maybe it might have the makings of a great pop song: “I’m leeeeeavin’… on a cruise boat.” It almost seems like we’ve been on the road for weeeeks to get to this point. Well, first thing, we have to get Sharon to church. There’s a cathedral nearby, within walking distance; although, we haven’t come across it yet. The lady at the front desk warned us, “Don’t follow the bells, because there are none.” Sharon replied that she’d already learned THAT lesson in Quebec City, and she shot me a glancing Shirley Smirk, recalling the time my intuitive insight landed her right in the middle of an Anglican mass. It was just under half a mile walk to the Holy Rosary Catholic Cathedral, a massive stone building ... read more

Vancouver is the town that hosted the 2010 Winter Games. Sharon recalls when she and Jim came here for the 1986 World Expo prior to their first Alaskan Cruise, and she’s been hooked on Alaska ever since. We were in no rush to rise this morning, and the scant light filtering in from our sheltered window did not provide much of an incentive. We headed by the Tim Horton’s, and on this Saturday morning there was no line so we popped inside. Sharon went with the chocolate chip muffin and today I asked for the Boston Cream and the honey crueler; alas, they were out of the Boston cream so I fell back on the chocolate iced donut (which was a poor substitution). We went down to the multi-bus/shuttle stop near Canada Place. The next available ... read more

After falling asleep in the wee hours of the morning, we barely noticed the 10 x 10 foot size of our hotel room, with an additional 10 x 6 foot bathroom which actually seemed much more spacious in comparison. The morning light barely filtered in through our third floor window which had an excellent view of the neighboring building about ten feet away. Still we managed to drag ourselves down to the Tim Hortons on the corner. The line wasn’t quite out the door; but, we seemed to have a fifteen minute wait. We seemed to be in a bustling part of downtown Vancouver on a Friday morning. Many locals were popping in for a donut and coffee. I ordered the breakfast bagel with bacon and Sharon went with the chocolate chip muffin. I also got ... read more

We had to hang some of the clothes that we’d washed the day before overnight to get them completely dry. By morning they were dry and we finished packing before going down for breakfast. We checked at the front desk to confirm that checkout was at noon; and, this time Sharon had remembered correctly. We hung out in the room until about 10:00AM. I thought that I had left Sharon plenty of room with Sudoku; because, my score was only 75% (with us, it’s usually tough to win with less than 90%, although, you never know). She managed to score in the sixties (although, she may edit this and assert that it was the high sixties). Needless to say, today was starting out pretty good for me. We really had planned to stay another hour in ... read more

We slept in and were in no rush to go down for breakfast. We took our time and did our Sudoku Challenge. After a number of “DNF’s” Sharon did manage to put one in the Win-Column yesterday; and, I didn’t think my 85% was going to hold up for the Intricate Weekday challenge, but it did! Each puzzle on our “Enjoy Sudoku” app grades your performance as a percentile against others who have done the same puzzle, and depending on the level, this is usually in the many thousands of other players. Today we had the vague notion that we were going to drive up and see Mount St. Helens. It’s sort of like when we were on Maui and had the notion to drive up Haleakala to see the sunrise and I joked with Sharon ... read more

We just spent the one night in McMinnville, so officially, this is completing the second leg of our multi-leg tour (well over a dozen I imagine) and commencing with the third leg. We had our complimentary breakfast at the Comfort Inn. We had a couple hours to kill in the room before we needed to check out. Today, we only need to drive to Portland, and we hadn’t much planned. Shirley was to be back at GenTog today, so we took our time getting packed, and moved our luggage down to the Jeep just before our 11 AM check-out time. On the way to Portland we decided to stop at Sherri’s Restaurant, a popular chain in Oregon that features wonderful pies. I chose the “Trio” which combines a sandwich/quiche, soup/salad and a slice of pie. I ... read more

We awoke to the sun filtering into our lofty abode, with the faint sounds of surf rushing to shore and a crisp breeze rustling the blinds as it refreshed us. We started cleaning up and rearranging things to be sure that we repacked everything later in the morning. It was then that I noticed that Sharon was mostly already packed while I still had much to do. Sharon spotted several deer next door, which seem to have an affinity for the garden flowers to be found there. “There are three, no four, I see three, no there ARE four!” Sharon exclaims. “Shoot them,” Sharon orders me as I’m about to do my morning Sudoku. Sharon claims that “she hasn’t had time” to keep up with our daily challenges, so I’ve racked up a nice little streak ... read more
