Well Austin has been a nice change from the hustling big cities we’ve been in so far! Everything and everyone are very relaxed and laid back here and we’ve met some really friendly and helpful people :) We ventured downtown this morning and after walking through a very deserted 6th street (the strip of live music bars) decided to escape the 37 degree sun back in the hotel pool and go back later. We caught the 1.5 million Mexican bats fly from under a bridge at sunset – it may sound boring but it was so crazy! It was a bit hard to take pictures though because they were moving so fast. We stood there for 15 minutes and they were still coming out from under the bridge which was lined the whole way ... read more

Hi everyone!! Just a quick blog to check in with you all. We flew into Austin this morning, what a horrendous night of travelling! 3 hours layover in Houston after 2.5 hours in the smallest plane ever!! Then a 24 minute (yes 24 minute!) flight from Houston to Austin. Just to add to the travelling we had an hour and ten minute bus to our hotel where we are going to chill out by the pool for the rest of the day. Scotty didn't sleep a wink last night and Annie had about 2 hours so we want to recover for a full day tomorrow. In spite of the looooong journey, our first impressions of Austin are good so far! We'll tell you all about it in tomorrow's blog! We're 6 hours behind now instead of ... read more

On our last day in Sin City we went to the top of the Stratosphere and waw, what a view! We could see for miles all around us and the strip looked even bigger from up there. Just watching the people bungee jump off the top was enough to make Scott feel nauseous and step away from the edge! The rides were unbelievable, we don’t know why anyone would pay to feel like they’re about to fall off a 829ft tall building. We didn’t stay up there long! We couldn’t come to Vegas without gambling, well Scott could have if Annie refused to spin the slot machine for him :) sadly we didn’t hit the jackpot, instead we each lost 5 whole dollars!! Annie preferred the straightforward Roulette table to the slot machines but still lost ... read more

Today we finaaallyyy had a relaxing day in Vegas, well kind of. We began with a yummy breakfast from Denny’s diner (so yummy we had to take a picture!) then made our way down to the Paris hotel. After a snoop around we headed back to our pool for a well needed relax and a swim. After a Mexican dinner we went to see the last of the shows – The Bellagio fountain, part of the Mirage volcano and the Treasure Island pirate show. Nothing beats the fountains! The pirate show….slightly x-rated and o.t.t – maybe not worth being sardined in a crowd exchanging sweat with other people but at least we can say we saw it!! Annie will be relieved to leave the scorching desert for Austin tomorrow night, Scotty is really going to miss Vegas ... read more

Five o’clock in the morning, eyes bloodshot and only half conscious, we trudged down to our bus for the four hour journey to the Grand Canyon, but boy was it more than worth it! Who knew a hole in the earth could be so mind blowing??! The photos don’t do it justice. We stopped off at the hoover dam on the way too which was pretty impressive. We couldn’t believe that there were no barriers, fences or even ropes between us and a 4,000 ft drop. Don’t worry family, we didn’t get too close but Annie was pushing her luck causing Scott to pull her back, knowing what a klutz she is! It was surprisingly cooler out there in the desert than the Vegas Strip. We had a free meal with the trip and it was ... read more

Today we learnt that it takes a looong time to walk through each hotel!! We explored the Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, Luxor, MGM and New York New York which all have impressive architecture. The day was nearly over before we realised though! Despite eating a banana first thing after concerns from our mums to eat some fruit at some point…Scott then had two slices of pizza for breakfast…Buuuuut! We had some frozen yoghurt instead of ice cream, it was delicious!!! Cake batter flavour – hominy hominy :) We’ve been looking for a show to watch while we’re here and were chuffed to find the jabbawockeez were performing at Monte Carlo. For those of you who don’t know they are an amazing dance group, youtube them! They were awesome! Funny and so creative! Unfortunately we couldn’t take pictures ... read more

Holy heat!! Walking into 39 degrees at ten this morning was rather out of our comfort zone…Scott loved it but Annie couldn’t walk 5 minutes without melting! We must’ve got through six litres of water today; we have never been so hot and the humidity is unbearable at times. It was refreshing to walk in and through the hotels with their ice cold air con, we only managed about 4 today though; they’re huge! The Venetian is amazing; indoor rivers, gondolas and Annie had to resist buying from the Thomas Sabo shop! Caesar’s Palace is too massive to comprehend, we easily got lost in a lot of the hotels. The Bellagio was Annie’s favourite with the free cookies in the lobby ;) and of course the fountain show outside – Waw! - the only way to ... read more

After an extended journey, due to the bus breaking down near Death Valley (we were told last week we’d only have two hours to live if this happened there) we finally arrived in Vegas at 7 o’clock and it was still 42 degrees! We have already found out in our short time here, it was well worth the journey! Our room is luxury, and at only £15pp a night you’ll see from the pictures it was a bargain! We haven’t seen further than Fremont Street and already we love it (don’t think Scotty will want to leave with the live DJ’s and party atmosphere, it’s right up his street!) We’ve been wowed already and we’ve only been here for three hours, hence the lack of photos. But seriously, waw!!! This place is better than we ever ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles August 9th 2012

It took us an hour and a half on the metro and bus but we eventually found ourselves in the part of Los Angeles that you see on tv! Santa Monica and Venice Beach truly are beautiful!! The pier was cool and after tanning (burning) it up on Santa Monica beach and cooling off in the sea we headed down to Venice Boulevard. It was awesome! There were so many quirky and unique things we wanted to bring home but given our luggage capacity, decided our clothes were more necessary for the next 5 and a half weeks :( Maggi – I’ve memorised some plaque designs that I would reeeeally like :) Don't worry mothers - we will put double the amount of sun cream on next time! Barely able to lie down in the sauna ... read more

We didn’t do so bad today considering we travelled through the night on a bus. Annie was drugged up on nytol, equipped with ear plugs and an eye mask so snored most of the way while Scotty struggled to get comfy. However, after a burger king at 3:45a.m, Augustus managed to get some sleep. It was already different to San Fran with the sweltering heat, California is having a heat wave :) While Scotty is in his element, Annie, being from the valleys, is not coping well with all the walking! After a quick change in the hotel we headed off to Hollywood and boy was that different to Downtown LA. The Hollywood sign looked strange from so far away after seeing it so big on tv but it was still awesome to see. The walk ... read more
