Introduction The Hikers went to Kangaroo Island for a family holiday and treated themselves to a repeat visit of the Fish Cannery walk at American River. Joining us on this walk were three of Dan's cousins (Jessie, Katherine and Joseph), Dan's grandmother (my Mum, Elly) and Dan's Uncle Michael. You may remember we also went on this walk last year - . You can find out more about American River from this web site and from the Po [View Full Entry]

Introduction Desperate to do some walking but taunted by fire, snakes and hot weather, the Hikers did a short walk on Sunday on fire tracks adjacent to Cromer Conservation Park. Cromer is an overgrown park. There are hardly any recognisable trails - so it can feel scary walking here. The Park is square-shaped and is small enough that you can't get lost without popping out on to a road. There is a water course through it, however, like most of the State of SA, this is currently dry. We have done the walk recommended in 20 Nature walks through this park [View Full Entry]

Introduction This is one of the tougher walks we have done - our legs really ached the next day or two. It takes in a section of the Heysen trail that runs along Sixth creek in the Adelaide Hills, however this is done in 2 parts. If you are interested in walking the Heysen trail yourself then it is probably wise to join a walking group such as the Friends of the Heysen trail who provide guided walks for those who want to go end-to-end, or for those who want to just see sections. An example of an (potential) end-to-ender (and [View Full Entry]

Introduction On the last week in October we indulged in a self-made long weekend in the Flinders Ranges. We took Friday and Monday off and headed to Wilpena Pound. We were based at the Wilpena Resort and had a nice room, albeit short of a few essentials, which were quickly replaced. From here we made several trips - the first BIG day - a walk to Saint Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinder’s Ranges, and on the second BIG day - a scenic flight around Wilpena pound, a 1-2 hour walk to Arkaroo rock, and short walks through Sacred [View Full Entry]

Introduction A couple of weeks ago we followed Ania's recommendation and headed to Chamber's gully for our walk - see . When we checked with her later, she said that she had seen our blog, but that we had gone on a different track than she normally took at Chamber's Gully. Apparently we needed to go out of the gully and up to the ridge top to get some good views and exercise (and avoid the bikes). We decided to give it a go. How to get there ... This walk is at the top of Greenhill Road - but for [View Full Entry]

Introduction Adelaide has a lovely walking path-come-bikeway that runs for 35 km along the River Torrens from the hills, through the city and on to the sea, called the Torrens Linear Park. Dan and I joined Andrea, Julia, Brinya and Ania for a day of bike riding along the Linear Park, starting in the city and heading to the hills. You can find out more about the Torrens Linear park at Wikipedia. Bicycle SA supply a map of the path we took. Interestingly, the [View Full Entry]

Introduction Every October long weekend there is a festival, called "Oysterfest", held in Ceduna, a town on the west coast of South Australia. It had been a decade since our last Oysterfest (pre-Dan) so we thought it was time to indulge ourselves, despite Dan's often passionately-expressed dislike of oysters (which he has never tried). You can read other accounts of the Ceduna Oysterfest at this web site and learn more about Ceduna here and, of course in [url=http:/ [View Full Entry]

Introduction So what do you do when you want to find your dose of serenity in South Australia, but the path is water, not land? Well the hikers treated themselves to a 2 hour family tour of the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary in sea kayaks this Sunday. How to get there We booked our tour through a company called Blue water Sea Kayaking and met Phil and Pip at Garden Island boat ramp, which is about 10 minutes from Port Adelaide. The fee was $100 for the guided tour of the Dolphin Sanctuary for two adults and two children. The [View Full Entry]

Introduction This walk had been recommended to the hikers by Ania, so when we got our new Push the Bush walking book by the Friends of the Heysen trail, we were finally able to locate a map of the area (Map 8) and make our own shorter walk. This walk takes in some of the Cleland Conservation park - you can find out more about this park at the Cleland's web site or on Wikipedia. Chamber's gully was originally the ho [View Full Entry]

Introduction It is with much pleasure that I share with you our visit to a great bush walk situated near Williamstown in SA called Warren Conservation Park. It is a 9km walk - up hill and down with fabulous views, interesting rocks and very serene bush land. It is part of the Heysen trail but this is a well-marked loop trail. You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness, although there are no horrendous steep sections, and if you are taking children they will need to be able to walk for up to four hours. There are many [View Full Entry]
