We returned to Para Wirra after the summer fires to witness the regeneration of the bush. The trees were fuzzy with re-growth and the grass trees abundant and flowering. [View Full Entry]

Introduction This week the hikers headed for Anstey Hill - the closest hill to our home - for their dose of serenity. The park is a recreation park (so dogs allowed and bikes in places as well). Although we have been before (see Anstey Hill), we thought we might try a different route to see what we could see. Anstey hill is located at the end of Grand Junction Road. We entered from Range road at the top of the hill which we accessed via Lower North East Road. See the route maps for more detail about how to get there, [View Full Entry]

Finally the rain came and the week after we headed to the hills to see the colours of Autumn. You really can't go past Mt Lofty Botanical gardens - it has a large number of northern hemisphere trees that put on a stunning display - and it aslo includes part of the Heysen trail. You can revisit our last blog about the gardens Apple picking and Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens We saw numerous glimpses of southern brown bandicoots - see pictures scurrying around the place. Rat-like but with short tails. We visited Fern gully - although it took quite a bit [View Full Entry]

The Hikers spent some time with family during Easter and exploring parts of the mid North and Riverland. Our first stop was Burra and a visit to the copper mine. We then headed to Quinn central to see Peter's family. One of our drives included a visit to the first wind turbine built at Hallett. There was also millions of hoppers around that were really easy to catch. We drove a little further and did the well-marked, but short Forest walk in the Bundaleer forest. After all the dryness of the countryside it was quite remarkable to be surrounded by so [View Full Entry]

Introduction It was back to the bush for the Hikers this wekend and we treated ourselves to the Barossa. Just outside of Tanunda we picked up the Heysen trail as it traverses the Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park. The last time we went to this park was July 2005 and the contrast between the two visits were striking. There were only a few, thin kangaroos this time when there were many breeding kangaroos 20 months ago. The recent rain has produced a fine green tinge to the land as it slowly starts to recover from the drought. The park has only gentle [View Full Entry]

What happened Today the hikers took to the bikes and headed down to the Adelaide International Kite Festival as part of our normal bike ride to North Haven. This Kite Festival is an annual event that takes place in Semaphore over three days and literally fills the place with colour, spectacle and lots of smiling faces. People are allowed to aggregate on the jetty and the kite flyers work on the beach. Large inflatable kites such as mermaids, killer whales, a spaceship, frill-neck lizards, frogs and the like can be seen from quite a distance. Dan says ... H [View Full Entry]

Introduction The Hikers have been avoiding the bush over the last month - mostly cycling and swimming to avoid the heat and danger (fire, snakes) of the South Australian summer. But we have been missing the blog and we would like to tell you about a very special event that happened last Saturday. This was the day that the Hikers learnt the secret of making tomato sauces in their backyard. The man with the secrets (add equipment) was Rito. Together we cooked up the yummiest and freshest tasting pasta and tomato sauces ever. It was a big day with all of [View Full Entry]
