Introduction Our walk this weekend was a delightful one - a 3 1/2 hour walk in the Black Hill Conservation park. This is our third visit to Black Hill. In October 2005 we did a 2 hour walk based on George Driscoll's recommendation in his book, 50 real bushwalks around Adelaide (see entry); and the summer before we did a 4.5 hour walk (not blogged) from the '20 Nature walks in Mount Lofty Ranges' book. This time, we made up our own walk. It was moderately difficult - none of the climbs were too steep, but there are quite a few [View Full Entry]

Introduction This week's walk was a long, hard but very rewarding one. We walked a part of the Heysen trail that starts on the Mount Bryan East road, goes up and over the highest peak in the Mount Lofty Ranges and then down into the town of Hallet. It look us 4 1/2 hours with several breaks. This one is for fit and experienced walkers. How to get there Mount Bryan is North of Burra, which is about 2 hours North of Adelaide. Take highway 32 towards Broken Hill. About 10 km south of the town of Hallett (just after the [View Full Entry]

Introduction This week's walk was at the Sandy Creek Conservation Park in the Barossa Valley. We also had a side visit to the Barossa Valley Dam where we had fun passing secret messages along the Whispering Wall. Our walk was based on Number 5 in George Driscoll's 50 Real Bushwalks - although if you have the book don't try following the map showing that the trail goes on the western side of the water tank - they must have moved it. George writes If you have never tried bushwalking, this is an ideal one to start with. and I agree with [View Full Entry]

Introduction We headed north for this week's walk, returning to the Para Wirra Recreation Park, and in particular, that part of the park that does not charge an entrance fee. This time we did a 2.5 hour loop walk through the southern end of the park over gentle hills. I would rate this walk as easy and suitable for families. All the tracks were wide, so well suited for walkers who are novices in picking out tracks in the bush. There is one moderately steep section (section 6 on the map). The park is full of flowering bushes and birds. If [View Full Entry]

Introduction This weekend's walk was a new one for us - a visit to the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park - and as we were all recovering from colds, it was a somewhat truncated walk. The basis for our walk was George Driscolls's walk number 35 (p76) in his book 50 real bushwalks around Adelaide. This walk is very suitable for children as it is only mildly undulating. The track is mostly sand and I could imagine it getting quite hot during Summer (however the nearby surf might make a nice cool down option). The i [View Full Entry]

Introduction On this walk, we had the pleasure of our friend Max's company. For his first bush walk, we chose Morialta Conservation Park as it is stunning, fun and not too difficult. How to get there … Morialta is located east of the city of Adelaide. I usually go down North Terrace, then Magill Road, and turn left on to St Bernard's road. About a kilometre or two along there is the right hand turn off to Moulles Road, that runs along the edge of Norwood Morialta High. You travel up this road until you get to a T-junction (in front [View Full Entry]

Introduction Montacute Conservation was a surprise, but beware, the walk is not for the weak of heart. According to this brochure the park is 200 hectares of park, 17 kms from Adelaide. The walk we did is number 42 in George Driscoll’s book, 50 real bushwalks around Adelaide. It takes in part of the Heysen trail and the Mawson trail and because it is very steep - it provides a very tough work out. How to get the [View Full Entry]

Introduction This week the hikers were lucky enough to have a long weekend to explore a bit further than the Adelaide environs. It was Dan’s turn to pick which walk to do and he had been eyeing off this one in the Adelaide for kids book by James Muecke. It wasn't really a walk at all, but a visit to Mannum minerals, however we were able to couple it together with a few other walks and touristy things while we were visiting the Mannum area. Mannum is about 75 km away from home (as the crow flies) and on the River [View Full Entry]

Introduction Ever wondered what it was like in the various wetlands around Adelaide? What would you see and do there? Well this blog will take you through 5 different wetland-based walking trails/parks that we have visited over the last few weeks, show you how they have been set up and let you know what you can expect. The 5 parks we visited were Mutton Cove Conservation Park near Osborne, Barker inlet wetlands that are near the Port river expressway, the Greenfields wetlands which are between Port Wakefield Road and Salisbury Highway, Port Gawler weir and the "Samphire discovery t [View Full Entry]

Introduction Today's walk was a new one, for us anyway, but at an old favourite, Onkaparinga. It was Peter's choice, and because the need for serenity was high, it had to be Onkaparinga. It's like visiting the Flinders ranges, but without all the travel! For this walk we started out on George Driscoll's walk number 30 called "Got It All" but we changed it, as you will see. This walk would be suitable only for fit walkers with kids eight years and over as the rock hopping and gully climb are rather demanding. You can see other journal entries about Onkaparinga [View Full Entry]
