A few pictures from last Sunday's Walk for the cure which was organised by the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation. A huge thanks to all the blog readers who donated - our team raised over $600 before the walk, which will go towards research into curing Diabetes type 1 (a disease that Dan has had since he was two). It was a lovely day - 22 degrees and bright and sunny. After doing our warm up exercises we set off for the walk - which was so pleasant and colourful along the seaside. The map of the walk is available online. If you would like to donate and you missed out earlier, the web sites stay open during October: Dan's donation web site Diana's donation web site... read more

Around the homestead

Peter, Dan and I went to Mt Bryan last weekend to attend Kym's 50th birthday celebrations on the Sunday. On the Saturday, the boys went out on sheep duty with Tom and I decided to make my own walk around the homestead. I was only out for about 2 hours and took a few pictures as I walked near the Razorback at Mt Bryan. There are not many trees in this area and according to the original maps the country has always been grassland. The trees that you can see dotting the horizon in the 'Start' photo were planted by Peter and I on Boundary road. We actually planted a lot of trees in this area (pre-Dan) and it is nice to visit them and see how much they have grown. Thanks to those who helped ... read more

Introduction Today's walk was a new take on the Peters Hill walk described in George Driscoll's "50 real bush walks around Adelaide". The one that George describes as Walk number 1 in his book took ages when we last went in 2005- this is a modification that takes in a little bit more of the Heysen Trail, and we were able to complete in 3.5 hours. we also visited the town of Kapunda in particular map the minor giant sculpture of a Cornish miner, and the Kapunda mines, where we did a 1.5 km walk. How to get there... See the route map - from the GPO head to Gawler and then on to Kapunda. Travel 13 km beyond Kapunda through to Hamilton. After Hamilton we travelled a few more kilometres before turning left on Murray's ... read more

This week the hikers headed for a delightful walk through Chambers Gully. We took the walk in the opposite direction to last time and enjoyed it very much. The creek was in full flow and the frogs were very happy about it. ... read more

Introduction The hikers went to visit Scott Conservation Park this Sunday and had a very pleasant (albeit slightly muddy) 3 hour walk. We did a section of a large walk published in the walking guide 'Push the Bush' rather than some of our earlier visits to Scott. While our earlier blogs about Scott were in full-blown spring - see url=http://www.travelblog.org/Australasia/Australia/South-Australia/Adelaide/Scott-Creek-Conservation-Park/blog-19301.htmlScott walk and url=http://www.travelblog.org/Australasia/Australia/South-Australia/Adelaide/Scott-Creek-Conservation-Park/blog-23457.htmlSilver mine - this walk was a winter one - although you couldn't but help notice the first lot of flowers peeking through. It was an interesting trail that took in a few new areas for us - a creek walk, and making our way down a hand made road - as well as some familiar areas.... read more

Introduction This was a drive that we did while we visited Quorn. Ken was keen to try out some Four-wheel driving so we joined him for some rough roads, high excitement and amazing scenery and wild life. You pay some money at the Austral Hotel in the main street of Quorn and access the Arden Hills from within Warren Gorge. A magnificent experience with stunning views to the East and West. Dan says... The drive was beautiful and stomach churning - a strange combination. Everywhere you saw nature, amazing views and lots of wildlife - it was so beautiful that you feel proud having Australian blood in you. It was stomach-churning as it went up and down, side to side and jiggle jiggle. I think I need an alka-selsa. ... read more

Introduction One of the key missions of our Quorn adventure was to get some tadpoles (well at least that was Cian and Natalie had in mind). This took us to the very beautiful Warren Gorge, about 20 minutes north of Quorn on the Arden Vale road. This is a camping area with scattered long-drop toilets and little else other than serenity, a flowing creek with tadpoles and a rocks in which to hide yellow-footed rock wallabies (Mum and Dad - you must put this on your to-do list). We didn't do much of a walk, just climbed up one of the rises to get some exercise, mostly choosing to focus on getting the taddies. Dan says... Hello readers, Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. The first thing we did was tadpoling. Some thought that there were no tadpoles, Dad ... read more

We made another trip to Hale with weekend. If you would like to know how to get there - I have included a route map. It was delightful to see water flowing in the creek and waterfall again after the last time we visited when it was bone dry. You might remember our previous blog about Hale: - but this was when it was bright and sunny - today's snaps are from a cool windy day that threatened (but didn't) shower. In other words, pretty good for walking. I took along Peter's golf umbrella in case it did rain - and it made a pretty good walking stick, so I might make 'taking an umbrella along' a bit of a habit. The only problem with this walk is that it is short - only 2 hours ... read more

What happened One of Quorn's attraction is the Pitchi Ritchi Railway. Our day's adventure started when we were having our delicious Miller's breakfast at the Old Mill motel in Quorn - served by our gracious host, Concepta - with a loud toot-toot; indicating that the steam train was all steamed up and ready to go. The kids were very excited! We walked down to the station and paid for our pre-reserved tickets in the Wandana carriage. It was a delightful journey to Woolshed flat over several bridges, up hills, and followed by many on-lookers intent on waving and photographing the train. We kicked the footy while they changed the engine to the other end. We were also allowed into the engine and who should we meet but Walter - an old work colleague, who was ... read more
