Mette went earlier to San Jose, Costa Rica, so Anna is the only one of the three amigos that can update the blog about Isla de Ometepe. And sorry amigos, I´m NOT sure about the date, because I don´t have a calendar and the days all blur into one... So here we go: From Granada we took a chicken bus to Rivas early in the morning. There we were met by the eager taxi drivers and told that there are no buses to San Jorge, which we thought was bullshit, until we saw all the other backpackers looking confused and [View Full Entry]

We're stuck on an island... Today is sunday, and we've been here on Utila for over a week now, the longest time we've continuously spent in one place so far. We've done everything we wanted to do here: Tamara got her 6 dives, Mette and Anna have worked on their tans, snorkeled and walked the island back and forth in flip flops (autch). This island was what we came here for: it's paradise (except for the damn sandflies, we look as if we've got the chickenpox again...)!! We arrived on a saturday evening and even though it was dark, we could [View Full Entry]

Sunset in the caribbean
The mainstreet
Anna at the beach

After a night in strange Omoa, we decided to sleep one more night on the lovely caribbean coast of Honduras before reaching Utila, one of the Bay Islands. Tela didn't turn out to be as "caribbean" as we would have hoped it to be, but another wild, chaotic, small honduran town. As the german hippie in Omoa had told us: this country is wild, and we could clearly sense the difference from indigenous Guatemala. After looking for a hostel for quite a while, getting more and more irritated... we finally found la posada del sol in the centre of town. The [View Full Entry]

Anna and Mette enjoying liquados...

We felt we'd seen Guatemala and it was time to move on to new country. It was a very early morning for us, the shuttle picked us up at 4am outside of another backpacker-nest, Jungle Party Hostel. After an uneventful ride to the border we paid 10q's to get out of the country and 3USD to enter Honduras. More stamps in our passports, nice. Ten minutes later we were in Copán and stayed at a very nice hotel: Via Via, which also had a cafe with delicious veggie-food. The next morning we went to see the ruins and fought off all [View Full Entry]

With another hangover hanging over us, we decided it was time to hit the beach; Monterrico. We decided not to take the chicken buses (due to the hangover..) and let the kind Doña Mercdes of Hotel Cafetin organize a shuttle for us. In Monterrico life is simple; tranquilo. The main "street" is a muddy/sandy PATH with all kinds of animals; pígs (of all sizes and colours), chicken, dog-pig mixes, snakes, cats, normal dogs. Apart from the animals the place seemed deserted. We did however, find a very nice place to stay, right at the beach! It is a small place (only [View Full Entry]

Us by the sunset
The turtles...

All Saints Day and an incredible hangover after last night´s Halloween celebration...We thought it might be a great idea to go to Santiago and see the festival of All Saints Day. Two chickenbus rides later we found ourselves in the middle of a celebration on a graveyard. Us lutherans are used to that graveyards are quiet and dark and a little sad places, so boy were we surprised to different relationship the guatemalans have with their ancestors! A guatemalan man we met, told us that the indigenous population communicate with their ancestors through flying bright coloured kites on All Saint [View Full Entry]

A family by the grave

Last saturday, after a good breakfast by the lake in Flores wondering where to head next, the owner of our hostel came with this great offer to us: he could arrange transport to the airport in Flores, flight to Guatemala City and transport from Guatemala City to Antigua for only 40US$!! After asking around a little and finding out that this wasn´t anything strange as it´s lowseason and hurricane-season and everything, we decided to take the offer. Of course the plane was a small 14 passenger local plane but the local assured us it was "segurísimo"! And so it was! Only [View Full Entry]

Guatemalan boarding passes
Market in Chichicastenango
Chickenbuses in Guatemala

So here we are, finally in Guatemala! In Palenque when we tried to find out how to cross the border, everybody (and I mean everybody) told us it wouldnt be possible without taking a "tour". Even the local tourist info only tried to sell us their own tours. It seemed it easnt possible to just cross the border without seeing magnificent waterfalls or ancient mayan-ruins... But after some research, we found the place where to take a colectivo to Frontera Corozal. We had to get up at 5am and packed our stuff and tried to get out. I litterally mean TRIED [View Full Entry]

Sunrise over Tikal ruins
Ruins of Tikal

We arrived yesterday in Palenque and it was a nice surprise when we got of the bus to see that Palenque is much warmer than San Cristóbal. When we got off after a 5hrs bus ride we were confronted by the hot and humid rainforest climate. We started looking for a place to stay and finally found one..with a fan:) We decided not to pay double price for air con, thought the fan would be enough. Me and Mette slept well that night, but Anna had to get up to turn off the fan that was on max..Only to notice that [View Full Entry]

Palenque
Anna impressed by the ruins

We finally left D.F. after Malin´s arrival and have now travelled 1/3 of the whole way to Costa Rica!! It´s incredible, but we spent 16 hours in a bus (a very good idea we thought..) to finally arrive in this lovely little town! The busride was actually a very pleasent one, the nicest bus I´ve ever taken (they showed movies and all), and we could sleep for 8 whole hours! We had planned to go to Oaxaca, but after waking up late, comparing prices, etc, we thought it would be better to take a nightbus (read: save accomodation-money...) and go straight [View Full Entry]
