Arrived in Cusco after a quick and satisfying 8 hr bus journey from Puno. Quick because I slept the whole way and satisfying because I barterted with the bus company and got the tickets for the five of us for just 15 soles each, about 3 pounds! We celebrated our arrival in Cusco with a much deserved night out, not sure how I managed it after Puno but one has to be strong! We met up with a friend the three girls had made while they were travelling in the US, as she is now renting in Cusco and knows all the local bars. We went to a bar which had pictures on its sign resembling magic mushrooms, and once you had been inside for a while you realised why. It was very cosy - basically ... read more

I travelled to Puno on the shore of Lago Titicaca with the three Welsh girls I met in Arequipa, Jess, Leanne and Rhian, and an English guy called Ben. We stayed at The Point hostel. After arriving we went straight into town as we only had two days to see the city and the lake. We visited the Cathedral, very similar to most of the others I have seen in Peru - very big and very ornate. We saw a baptism taking place, I am not sure we were meant to be in there! We then went for food and found an excellent restaurant which offered us the set menu for 15 soles each with a free drink, and I think we all chose Lomo Saltado, which is an excellent local dish with spicy meat, rice ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa December 3rd 2009

Today I spent the day exploring Arequipa, Peru´s second largest city and possibly its prettiest. Arequipa is called the white city, these days it is thought that the city has this name because of the white local volcanic sillar stone used in all the buildings. However, at the Santa Catalina de Siena Monastery we were told this name originally was given to the city as it was one of the first places in Peru in which white people settled. The Santa Catalina de Siena Monastery was absolutely stunning - the monastery was begun in 1580, forty years after the city was founded. Eldest daughters from rich families were required to make a good marriage at about 14 years of age nd bear about 15 children, whereas second daughters got (in my opinion) a far better deal ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon December 3rd 2009

This entry is mainly for Kirsty who has an unhealthy obsession with alpacas :P After getting an overnight bus from Nazca (finally!) I arrived in Arequipa on Monday at 7am. I had managed to catch up by email with a Canadian girl called Tanya I met in Lima, and she was also in Arequipa so I headed straight to her hostel. I arrived and found she had managed to book me onto the same bus as her to go into Colca Canyon that morning, so I did a quick rejig of my bags and sorted out some overnight kit, stashed my ruchsack in the hostel and we set off. I probably smelt and I had got no sleep the night before, but when opportunities are available...! The changing scenery was quite spectacular as we moved from ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines December 3rd 2009

My plan to get a 3pm bus from Nazca to Arequipa backfired when the bus was cancelled so I ended up with an extra ten hours in Nazca. (The bus toilet had broken, which is important when your journey is eight hours!) So to use my time in an intelligent and informative way I unpacked my bikini and went to the Nazca Lines hotel and paid to use their swimming pool for the afternoon! It was rediculously hot and I had reached the end of my tether with the cat calling and whisteling from the Nazca men outside so the four hours I spent lazing in the sun and swimming in the pool were a very welcome break. There was a Canadian couple doing the same thing (yes, more Canadians!) and also a Scottish couple, and ... read more

South America November 29th 2009

I have had a VERY crazy morning. I arrived in Nazca yesterday and booked a room at the ´Friend´s house´hostel and also booked a flight over the Nazca lines through them. This morning I waited at the hostel for my tour of the Nazca lines at 8.30am as arranged, but no one turned up and there were no hostel staff around. Eventually the hostel guy turned up and was like, ´oh yeah - it isnt happening now´! Luckily, I have a rule of never paying until I do something so I didn´t lost any money, but flights are only widely available in the morning before it is too hot so I was worried I would be stuck in Nazca another day waiting for a flight, and there isn´t that much else here! So I decided to ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Paracas November 29th 2009

To get to Paracas I got a bus from Lima and arrived early evening. I stayed in the tiny little village overnight and spent the evening playing with kids who seemed to live at the hostel. I think that rather than paying for a room I should have been paid for babysitting as their parents dissapeared! But it was really good actually as they taught me lots of Spanish, including my numbers (the shame of being taught your numbers by a 4 year old who clearly thinks you are really thick!) which is useful for bartering in shops! They also taught me lots of games they play in school which will come in useful when I get to the orphanage. I was up late as there town has an election on Sunday and the main candidate ... read more

An update on my weekend, which was eventful to say the least! On Saturday I got up really early and went to the butterfly farm alone, as to go with a guide was 25 pounds, more than my budget for a daytrip. The Lonely Planet guide had basic directions and I got an article from a local newspaper so I had figured pretty much how I was going to get there and how much money to pay. I had to get a mototaxi from the hostel, basically a tuktuk, a motorbike with a box on it, and go to the port near Iquitos which is 20mins away, THE bumpiest and coolest and most exciting and life-risking journey of my life! I got to the port and there were NO tourists at all, so I stood out ... read more

South America » Peru November 19th 2009

Hi all! Just arrived in Iquitos in the Amazon, north of Peru. I flew here from Lima this morning and got in around 1pm, have spent the time since trying to acclimatise to the VERY hot weather conditions, apparently it is about 32 degrees today and that is normal. Got to my hostel in one piece, took recommendations from a Canadian girl I spent time with in Lima - thanks Tanya! Hostel is great, certainly the word rustic comes to mind but there is a central courtyard garden which you look out on from each room and is full of jungle plants and is gorgeous. Flight here was absolutely amazing! First we went over the Andies, where some of the peaks seemed to reach up almost to the plane. Then we came over the Amazon, which ... read more

South America November 16th 2009

After a 26hr journey I finally arrived in Peru at 7am on 16th Nov your time, 2am Lima time. My flight was delayed so I was a little concerned that the taxi scheduled to collect me from the airport would have left and I would have to arrange another in my broken Spanish while exhausted but fortunately the driver was there waving a board with my name on when I arrived. (I have always wanted to be met by someone with a nameboard, I don´t know why but it was very exciting!) The Spanish I have been trying to learn paid off in the taxi, I had a good conversation with the driver who gave me lots of advice and tips on things to see. The journey through Lima was eye opening - I saw children ... read more
