We Left for Vang Vieng on the 2nd and stayed till the 6th July. We had to wait ages for the mini bus at Luang Prabang and after a short break down (thankfully) we ended up arriving at 8.30pm. The scenery was again stunning with the clouds misting over the mountains followed by a spectacular sunset, so good we had to have a photography break at the request of one of the guys on the bus! The only problem was the state of the roads. The poor quality road material used to build the roads here mean that large pot holes occur frequently, in some places the roads just become like dirt tracks. Coupled with the insane overtaking and humendous drops on one side, it made Alton Towers seem like a walk in the park! Our ... read more

We left Thailand on the 29th and crossed the Mekong on rickety little boats to the Loas border where we were given our visas and transported to our slow boat. The slow boats were indeed slow as we set of down the Mekong with Thailand on one side and Loas on the other. The scenery was fantastic but the journey is long and it doesn't take long to get uncomfortable in the car seat seats! The boat stopped fairly regularly letting locals on and off just onto random rocks and beaches. We have no idea how they know where they are, it seemed like we were just going in circles to me. After 2 hours both sides of the river become Loas but there is no visible difference. It felt wierd to be in a different ... read more

We only stayed one night here. Its right on the border between Thailand and Loas and is really tiny. We booked our slow boat trip to Loas down the Mekong river through a company run by two sisters who were lovely and ran us around into town and lent us bikes for free! The only nice bit about staying here was the sunset over Loas across the Mekong that we watched from our Guest House Balcony!... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai July 5th 2012

When we finally dragged ourselves away from Pai for the second time we travelled 6 hours East back through Chiang Mai all the way to Chiang Rai. Our first night here we went exploring the local markets. The day market was just food and it was crazy! The raw meat and sweet cakes meant there was an abundance of wasps and flys mixed in with the many humans crowding the streets. Despite selling only food, nothing looked ediable to either of us, although some of it looked fairly interesting, like the bright turquiose mussels. We left in search of the Night Bazaar but ended up walking round in circles and should have gone back to the main point of reference for making your way round the city which was a huge and very ornate golden clock ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Mae Hong Son June 27th 2012

Jordan and I decided to leave Pai on Sat 23rd, Jed and Hailey came with us and we travelled to Mae Hong Son, from here you can do a loop via another small town and back to Chiang Mai. The bus journey was probably the best bit of the trip. It takes 3(ish) hours over the mountains and us being tight wads braved the local bus as it was half the price of the minibus. When the bus arrived at Pai we immediately regretted our decison as it looked a right mess but as it turned out it was ok for space and as all the windows were down it was quite fresh and not to hot on there! The bus goes up and down the steep mountains so slowly you think it might just konk ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai June 22nd 2012

We have been in Pai since Sunday so nearly a week now. We're staying in a lovely air conditoned bungalow (luxury) with an amazing view only draw back is the rickety bridge across the river to get to it! Pai is a small town 4 hours away from Chaing Mai and its all about peace and love. Its got a population of about 3000 but most of its business is from the hippy westerners that visit it. Anyone who doesn't run a business catering for the tourists tends to be a farmer either growing rice, soy beans or garlic. The town itself is small and the best way to get about to see the sites is by moped. We have hired them the last 3 days alongside a couple we met on the way here who ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai June 22nd 2012

On our last day in Chaing Mai we decided to visit the zoo. Its pretty much like any other zoo apart from some of the animals you are allowed a little closer too. The hippos fpr example can be fed and they come right up close to you with thier hugeeee teeth! The Zoo itself is in the mountains and whilst thier is a bus around it it tends to zoom past things so fast you dont actually get to see anything. So we walked most of the day in the sun up and down really steep hills and we were knackered by the time we got back. A couple of highlights were the pandas, the white tigers and the Monkeys!... read more

The rest of the trek.... We had a 10am start the next day after a healthy sized breakfast. we had another 3 hour trek to the 'Jungle Camp' which was "same, same but different" as described by Machete. The walk was similar to the day before up and down a few hilly bits that had us ll puffing and panting with Machete stopping occasionally to hand us a leave to taste or smell. When it came to negotiating our way through the rice paddies we moved quite slowly as the thin walls dividng the wet boggy paddies aren't exactly stable and noone fancied falling in. When we stopped for a noodle luynch Machete asked if anyone fancied trying Tarantula for tea! Jordan was up for it so Machete shot off into the jungle and came back ... read more

After a chill out day in Chaing Mai we were booked to do 3 day 2 nights jungle trekking. We were picked up at 9am by and driven into the Mae Taeng Mountains about an hour or so from Chaing Mae. There were four of us in our group, just us and a German couple called Janis and Tina. We got to know each other a bit on the journey out and ended up getting on really well. When we arrived at the start of our trek the first thing our crazy guide 'Machete' did was crush up a plant and give us all Rambo face paint then a further hundred metres in tried getting us all to eat these massive red ants. I was the only one who didn't (too alive and wriggly) but the ... read more

We arrived in Chaing Mai and settled into our guest house before going to the Sunday 'walking' Market which runs for miles down one the the main streets. We immediatley felt a more chilled vibe then in the Bangkok markets. People dont hassle you at the stall, they just let you browse until your ready to barter with them. The stalls sol much more arts and crafts goods then any other market and there was singing and dancing all the way along the street. I bought myself some odds and ends started to feel guilty then worked out how much money I'd spent in english equivelent and it turned out to be about a tenner haha! We had diiner in a small restaurant behind the stalls and we could here live music from a couple of doors ... read more
