Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui August 22nd 2012

Sophie continued to travel with us as we made our way to Ko Samui. For the first couple of night we stayed in a quieter area called Big Buddah Beach (no buddah in sight!) Here we had nice clean bungalows and a lovely pool to ourselves. We spent most of these two days messing about in the pool with brief excursions to the beach but it was nice doing nothing for a couple of days. We did have a really nice meal out one day and I tried a Catfish Red Curry which was delicious!!! After this we moved to Lamai and stayed at New Hut Bungalows, right on the beach. These were a lot more basic but it was lovely walking out on the golden sand every morning! We spent our first day in the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan August 11th 2012

We arrived at 2 Rock Bungalows in Ban Tai (as recommened by Nadia) to greeted by more lovely white sand and clear blue sea. The staff (Chang and Aye) were lovely & kept us company while we waited for Surf to show up! We also bumped into a couple of guys we'd met in Luang Pra Bang so it was nice seeing them and catching up on thier adventures! When Surf arrived it was a brief reunion before making our way to meet Leah and Jamie who we'd been diving with. The taxi however decided to drive straight past thier GH and so we ended up on the beach for a couple of bevvys just us 3. We decided to hit the 'Jungle Party' which was wicked and we were covered in UV paint within minutes! ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao August 11th 2012

From Hua Hin the night bus dropped us in Ranong, a weird fishing town at 5.30am. We caught another rickety boat in the pouring rain over to MyanMar for them to stamp our passports - this was definitely our least favourite boat trip so far! Once back in Thailand with another 15day visa in hand we got a minivan to Champong and waited a few hours for our night boat to Koh Tao. The rusty old boat was huge and packed with people, concrete, leaf roofing, bikes, water and a dog named Bombzie! We slept in a little dorm on the boat until 6am the next morning and then made our way to Sairee beach. It took us a long while but we eventually ended up at Bans Diving Resort! We signed up to a PADI ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Hua Hin August 11th 2012

The first night in Hua Hin we stayed in Memory GH and it had the smallest, most uncomfortable bed so far! We arrived fairly late and went straight out for dinner on the pier. I had mussels for the first time and Crab and loved it! Early the next morning (5am) we were up and organising how to get to Jordans fishing trip. Eventually we were picked up by a man called David Wilson (who's brother is apparently a hit in the angling world) and driven to GreenField Valley Fishing Resort. 5mins after arriving Jordan was hooking into his first catch of the day - a Amazon Redtailed Catfish. Throughout the day Jordan caught: Redtail Catfish X6 Baramundi X1 Walking Catfish X1 Pacu X6 Siamese Carp X6 See Photos! HOWEVER... he did not catch the fish ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi August 11th 2012

We travelled to Kanchanaburi to visit the Tiger Temple there, supposedly run by monks, however after arriving and reading up about the place we decided it was far to controversial for us to visit. Instead we went to see the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway which was very educational! Built by POW during WW2 the bridge cost over 100,000 lives because of its poor working conditions. Some of you may have seen the film! The rest of the time however we spent by the pool. The lively tourist street in Kanchanburi was good fun and we went to the Buddah Bar one night and met a Californian who was 'jamming' with the band next door. We followed him over and had a great night dancing to the reggae reggae music! We left ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok August 7th 2012

We stayed near the MBK shopping mall this time and skipped straight to the huge cinema to watch the new Batman film. We got the Skytrain to Patpong - just average night market but in the seedier part of town. After departing with a few pennies in the market we spent a few mor ein a bar listening to a brilliant band. They performed an amazing rendition of Bohemian Rapsody. We met an Australian didgeridoo (?) player who had met Prince Charles after playing the instrument for him! After this we did the unspeakable and went to a pingpong show! Surrounded by bikini clad girls in seconds, we watched the show then hastily got ourselves out of there!!! The next day I stormed the supermarkets in the hunt for some cheese and was not let down. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-East Thailand » Nakhon Ratchasima August 7th 2012

We paid for the most expensive bus of the trip so far which was all well and good until he forgot our stop at Pak Chong and dropped us on the side of the motorway about 10km away. Very luckily we bumped into an ex pat who gave us a lift back into town. We ended up staying to the south of the town en route to the National Park. We were up early the next day to get the local bus at 7am to the park gates. The bus never showed so we ended up hitchhiking to the gate and then again to get to the visitors centre 14km inside the park. Here we managed to get a guide (Lam) with only one other person to take us on an 8km walk to Haew Suwat ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Eastern Thailand » Ubon Ratchathani July 23rd 2012

We arrived in Ubon after crossing the border back into Thailand by foot giving us 15days on a new visa. We managed to stock up on some essentials like allergy pills and travel adaptors. It was nice to be back in a Thai city and be the the only westerners around. Ubon is famous for its died cotton and there were little handicraft shops everywhere. We only stopped one night and there was a huge cockroach in our room that had me running around like a mad person. We left for Surin the next day. Thinking we would be able to find out some more about the elephant study centre we'd read about we wandered around Surin for ages and noone could help us. After a night here we just caught the bus 58km north to ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Don Det July 17th 2012

We left Thakek after returning the mopeds and got the bus to Pakse in order to get to 4000 islands and DonDet. The only excitement on the bus occured when the tyre exploded, bits coming through the floor and blowing some poor guys flip flops off. It didnt take too long to sort and we slept most of the way until we were thrown off the chairs as the rather enthusiatic driver sped over the bumps in the road. After a brief stop in Pakse in a lovely aircon room we drove further south near to the Loas/Cambodia border and got a boat to the small island of Don Det in the Mekong River. Here we met up with Troy again and were intorduced to Phillippe and Mark who we spent the rest of the day ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Tha Khaek July 17th 2012

We travelled to Thakek via Vientiane, Loas's Captial. We only stayed there one night which we spent with Troy, a guy we'd met in Vang Vieng but there wasn't much to see so moved straight on. We travelled '1st Class' to Thakek on a bright pink bus that smelt a little bit like mould and had leaky aircon. When we arrived we went straight to the recommended Thakek Travel Lodge alongside pretty much everyone else on the bus. We walked round the small town that night looking for somewhere too eat but gave up after a good 2km walk and ate back at the lodge in the end, it was not at all touristy there. We stayed up that night chatting to an older Aussie couple exchanging stories. The next day we just wandered through town ... read more
