October 1, 2013 I DID IT! I have now been to all 50 of the great United States of America! Vermont did it for me today. I will also be nice and mention that Joe finished his 50 several days ago. Oh, it was so hard to leave our friends' beautiful coastal Maine home this morning. We had such a good time with them and they pampered us way too much. This morning one of their neighbor's sailboats was missing from its mooring. He'd taken it to dry storage, a sure sign winter is on its way. It seemed incongruous with the 70 degree plus temperatures we were enjoying. As Joe was putting our suitcases in the car, a young woman jogging by yelled out, "You can't leave now, the weather is perfect!" And it was. ... read more

September 29-30, 2013 We have stayed the last two nights with friends at their beautiful home (we sleep in the guest house) on an island near Yarmouth, Maine. It's been a heavenly two days: toured the Casco Bay in our friends' boat, walked around the island preserve, visited the shops in Portland, and just enjoyed being with our friends. What a gorgeous part of the world this is! We've been pampered here and it's going to be hard to leave tomorrow!... read more

September 28, 2013 We had an easy 21 minutes driving into Boston from Framingham early this morning and no problem at all finding a place in the underground parking at Boston Common. It wouldn't have been this fast and easy if it hadn't been a weekend and the parking would have been $40 instead of $12. We are a couple of tired puppies tonight, I think we walked at least 8 miles today. We got an early start to this bluebird sky day...we walked around Boston Common, toured the public gardens, walked through the Faneuil Market and Quincy Market, walked the entire Freedom Trail and saw every sight and read almost every interpretive sign on it, walked over the Charlestown Bridge, climbed the 294 steps to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument, boarded the U.S.S. ... read more

New Bedford, MA, is the whaling capital of the world. When we began planning this trip, New Bedford was on Joe's list of places he wanted to see. We were the first ones into the NPS visitor center this morning to get maps and information and then walked around the old town admiring the granite stone roads, the architecture of the old buildings, and the whaling influenced shops. The Whaling Museum is a first class operation. We spent over two hours there learning about the whaling industry through the ages. The docents were all intelligent and well-spoken people that were excited about whales. We had lobster bisque and clam chowder at the Waterfront Cafe and then went to the harbor to view the Ernestina, a schooner launched in 1894. So it's now 49 down and one ... read more

September 26, 2013 It was a lovely morning, we were up early walking "Marginal Way" which is a paved walkway with the Ogunquit Beach on one side and beautiful inns and homes on the other. Following the advice of our inn owners our destination for the two mile walk was the Cove Cafe where I had the best crab cakes I've ever had, and according to the waitress just about everyone that orders them says the same thing. It's hard to get crab cakes right. The seasoning is either too bland or too strong and the cracker filling is too much or too little. These were perfect, but the waitress couldn't get the owner/chef to give me the recipe. Neither of us had ever been to Cape Cod before and now we're not real eager to ... read more

September 25, 2013 The weather was a little better this morning for our drive and short walks in Acadia NP early in the morning. I love the stone bridges and the carriage paths. It would be such fun to actually ride in a horse drawn carriage in this park, but I'm sure Joe would prefer riding his bicycle. We drove through most of Mount Desert Island that has both parkland and private land, all beautiful. In the town of Northeast Harbor we picked one of the multiple bakeries and had some delicious blueberry scones with our coffee. The people on Mount Desert Island have a nice lifestyle...in the summer. I'm sure most of them aren't there in the winter. We did love Acadia NP and can certainly see why a few of our NPS friends that ... read more

September 24, 2013 We had to be at the ferry at 6:45 AM this morning, set three alarms and we both woke up before the alarms went off. The 90 minute ride went by quickly as we ate a little breakfast and visited with fellow travelers. We drove through rain for most of the morning. We stopped at St. Croix Island International Site that commemorates a French settlement on the island that failed miserably. We did have a nice talk with the site manager there and she loaned us an umbrella to take on the interpretive walk. We enjoyed that small site even with all the rain. We drove the scenic routes on our way to Acadia NP and made a couple of stops just for fun. One was at Jasper Beach, we think we found ... read more

September 23, 2013 The weather cooperated so today found us on Grand Manan Island after all. On our way to Black's Harbor, NB, to catch the ferry we took a detour in St. John to take a better look at the "Reversing Falls." I won't go into the physics here, but it's quite interesting. We had read that to bring the car on the ferry it was a "no reservation, first come, first served" type of thing. But when we got there we found you COULD make a reservation and we were put into a line of vehicles labeled "no reservation." But, we did get on, along with many construction workers and maybe four other tourists, it's pretty late in the season for this vacationland. It was a 90 minute beautiful ride and we are so ... read more

September 22, 2013 Drove off the Atlantic Vision ferry in North Sydney around 9:30 AM, gaining a half hour by arriving back in Nova Scotia. The 16 hour ferry crossing from Newfoundland was smooth and our cabin berths were very comfortable, we both slept well. Got a note from Joe's sister saying that his mom said that Joe was in Gander, Newfoundland, on a flight refueling stop on their way to Europe in 1951. So this was Joes' second trip to Newfoundland. In Baddeck, Nova Scotia, we stopped at the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site. This was his summer home and there are about 15 acres of beautiful grounds devoted to Bell. We stopped in the town of Pictou to look at the high quality knives that are made there. Joe has been seeing these McDonald's ... read more

September 21, 2013 Breakfast is late (8:30) at the Rendell-Shea Manor on weekends, so Joe and I spent the extra time rearranging our clothes and putting the necessities in one small bag for the overnight ferry back to Nova Scotia. We'll leave everything else in the car. Breakfast was good with blueberry pancakes, lots of fruit, yogurt and granola, juice and coffee. It was a sunny warm day which made it all that much harder to leave Newfoundland. To all of you reading this that hope to visit some day, allow a minimum of two weeks to see this wonderful island. I know I keep repeating myself about this, but the people are what we'll remember even more than the beautiful scenery. Even the young people were eager to visit and share stories and give information. ... read more
