North America September 20th 2013

September 20, 2013 This may have been my favorite day of the trip so far! Started off with a breakfast of eggs, bacon, yogurt and granola and lots of fruit and coffee at the Rendell-Shea B&B and interesting conversations with our fellow guests, a diamond broker from Belgium here on business, an owner of an herbicide company and his wife from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and four people from Calgary. It was a lively discussion and a fun way to start the day. As you can see by our photos, the buildings of St. John's are painted bright colors, probably to make those long cold winter days seem less depressing. Our street consists of colorful historic row houses with the harbor at one end and the large Military Park at the other end. We walked two hours up ... read more

September 19, 2013 Well, Twillingate, Newfoundland, was nice but we think the icebergs (that are gone now) must be the big attraction. We drove up to the lighthouse, a good viewpoint for spotting whales and saw several, Joe thinks they were humpback whales. We had an excellent lunch of codfish in Twillingate and talked to so many friendly people. One annoying speech mannerism (to me anyway) is that many women punctuate the end of their sentences with "my darling." As in "Oh, yes, we have seafood chowder here, my darling." A moose ran across the road in front of us near Gander, a place where there were no moose sensors. In many areas in Newfoundland, along the roads there are "moose sensors" that are tall posts with a motion detector on it that flashes a light ... read more

Very nice...one of my photos was nominated and selected as Travel Blog's "Photo of the Week." See link: http://www.travelblog.org/Topics/33772-1.html September 18, 2013 Hotel North in St. Anthony provided a good night's rest and breakfast. We talked with a lot of locals, such a friendly town. We drove to the north end of the Viking Trail so that we could visit another UNESCO World Heritage site, L'Anse aux Meadows. This is the spot of the first authenticated European presence in North America. Vikings were here around 1000 AD and archaeologists have uncovered the remains of three dwellings. We found this place truly fascinating... seeing the artifacts in the well-done interpretive center, wandering around the mounds of the old dwellings, and enjoying the costumed interpreters in the cozy recreated sod buildings. We were the only hut visitors for ... read more

September 17, 2013 We woke up in our little room next to a big river in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and there was still no motel personnel on site. This was the first time we've stayed in a motel and never spoke with any staff. We paid over the phone with a credit card and the room was open when we got there. Newfoundland is like Nova Scotia in that the roads and areas have cute descriptive names. Today we traveled the "Viking Trail" and it was magnificent! We wanted to see Gros Morne National Park and other than a four day hike, the best way to see the park is by taking a two hour boat ride on Western Brook Pond. This used to be a fjord but Joe says that isotonic rebound caused the land ... read more

Up early for a pleasant breakfast at the Harbourfront B&B. Another guest from Toronto had just arrived from Newfoundland and took the time to write down a list of suggestions for us. We drove onto the ferry at 9:45 AM and then found our seats. We paid extra to get into the nicer reserved section for the six hour cruise from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. To get into this section with the cushy seats you need a key card. We entered and discovered there were only two other couples in the entire area, one from Colorado Springs and the other from Hamilton, which is near Toronto. We six had our own entertainer, a great singer/guitar player. We spent the entire trip visiting and dining with the Toronto couple, exchanged emails and ... read more

September 15, 2013 One night at the Markland Resort at the northern part of Cape Breton Island was certainly not enough, what an amazing part of the world! With the cool sea breeze coming through the window, a cozy bed, and an exhausted body, I think I fell asleep in two minutes... a record for me. After a nice breakfast with the cyclists we were soon back on the Cabot Trail. We took a coastal route detour that took us out of Cape Breton Highlands NP so that we could get a few more ocean views. We stopped at several places along the road for birding, but struck out there. The migrating birds that were supposed to be here weren't. We stopped in at the luxurious Keltic Inn to tour the grounds and interior. It was ... read more

September 14, 2013 Ceilidh Trail Said goodbye to Halifax and Dartmouth at 8:15 AM, nice cities but we're ready for some countryside. We crossed the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton Island, one of the "must do's" of this trip. The island's roads are divided into themed "trails" by the tourism bureau. We started out on the Ceilidh Trail up the west side of the island. The focus of this trail is Celtic heritage and music and you hear it everywhere you go...in stores, in pubs and restaurants, and even from car stereos. We decided to stop by the Red Shoe Pub for lunch in Mabou which is owned by the famous (not to us, though) Rankin sisters, an experience we highly recommend. At noon it was as lively as can be with loud conversations and Celtic ... read more

When we saw that Hurricane Gabriel would appear in Nova Scotia as heavy rain today, we decided that this would be the day to do make some ferry reservations for Newfoundland, do laundry, buy a new suitcase for me, and walk the streets of Halifax and we accomplished all four. We love Costco in Prescott and we loved it here, too. Such fun to look at products not offered at our store and compare the prices which are much higher here. We are staying in Dartmouth which is across the Bedford Basin of the Atlantic from Halifax. When we got here we took a toll bridge across, but today we took the ferry to Halifax's waterfront and downtown. It was a foggy ferry trip and the harbor area food stands were locked up and buskers were ... read more

We amazed ourselves at how much we packed into one day! Matthew, our motel/B&B host and chef in Yarmouth, did indeed fix us a "special" breakfast as promised. When we walked into the lobby he escorted us to a beautifully prepared table for two. There were eleven different kinds of fruit on our plate. Matthew is very proud of his culinary presentation skills and even though it was just scrambled eggs, ham and a boiled then pan fried potato, after he expounded on the "purity of his ingredients" I was intimidated enough to not ask for hot sauce. But it was a great way to start the day, loved Matthew's choice of guitar music, too. We followed the Lighthouse Trail (Highway 3) all the way to Cape Sable Island and the southernmost point in Nova Scotia ... read more

September 11, 2013 Joe let me sleep until 9 AM so we got a late start. My back is a little better, I can walk just fine so I'm happy for the stops for the sights. I'm grateful that Joe lugged our luggage today. Hmm...is that why we call it luggage, because we lug it? Never thought about that before. We had a very warm 76 degrees and sun for our touristy treats. We left Truro, Nova Scotia and drove along the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy. We are still marveling at the tides and tidal flats. I have decided the basin isn't good for much other than marveling at...there is little wildlife or flora to speak of and the tides preclude any kind of shipping industry. But it is surrounded by fertile soil ... read more
