We sadly said goodbye to the 1000 Islands and Tannis and Ken, our hosts at the Riverview Bed and Breakfast. They outdid themselves with pastries, eggs, bacon, fruit, juices and good coffee for breakfast. We enjoyed the other guests, a young couple from Alexandria, VA. I forgot to mention in my blog yesterday that 1000 Island salad dressing originated in this area. The chef at that big castle on an island got the recipe from a local lady and popularized it at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NY. I now have the original recipe and I will make it for my Prescott friends. I've also added the recipe on a photo on the previous blog. By the way, Prescott is a big name here. The town of Prescott is near here and there are lots of stores, ... read more

We stayed at Radisson Suites last night in Toronto, checked in near midnight after all our night-time fun. Slept too late this morning and didn't get going until ten. We've learned to grab good coffee at the Tim Horton chain fast food places...quick, and cheap. We arrived at Gananoque in the early afternoon and what a sweet little town it is. We are here because it is one of the centers of activity for the Thousand Islands, one of the major stops of this trip. We are staying at the Riverview Bed and Breakfast, the couple that own it are fun and intelligent and our room is comfortable with a jacuzzi tub. There are only three rooms in the house and they are all full tonight. We will meet everyone tomorrow at breakfast. There are really ... read more

August 29, 2013 Slept in a bit, had breakfast at the Coachhouse Inn in Tobermory, then it was off to see more of "The Bruce." I'm realizing that in this part of the world, and probably for a good portion of the rest of this trip, that when people say "great scenery" they are referring to water, trees, and a lighthouse or two. But it was pretty good scenery taking Dyers Road to the Cabot Head lightstation. We followed the Lonely Planet's suggestion to avoid the poison oak on the side of the road and took a short walk at Cabot Head instead. Then it was time to get out of the boonies and travel on to Canada's largest city. Our impressions of Toronto: big (6 million people), full of construction (must do it all in ... read more

Aug.28, 2013 We were hesitant at the beginning of this trip to even include Niagara Falls in our stops, but, we decided that we are probably the only two old people in the USA that haven't been there so here we are. We parked at the Casino as suggested by Trip Advisor and it was an easy walk to the Niagara Parkway and the beautiful Queen Victoria Park. The early bird doesn't always get the worm...we were the first ones to arrive at Table Rock overlook and had the place to ourselves. That was nice, but the morning was still overcast and our photos show a gloomy falls. When we drove by a couple of hours later, the sun was shining on the falls but the viewing areas were packed with people. Guess it was nice ... read more

Aug. 26, 2013 Grateful for Shuttle-U in Prescott that picked us up at our home and delivered us to the Best Western at the airport in Phoenix. Nice to be able to leave the car in our garage and not worry about it being parked at the airport for six weeks. We were up at the ridiculous hour of 3 AM for our uneventful, almost comfortable flights to Charlotte, NC, and Detroit, MI. We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton in Romulus, MI which was filled with airline personnel and the four friendly people on our shuttle to the hotel were all from Phoenix and one guy grew up in Prescott. His last name was "Fain," a name that is well known to my Prescott readers. We searched Trip Advisor and found the #1 rated restaurant ... read more

A few words about California is a strange way to begin a blog about a trip to the Canadian maritime provinces and New England. But Joe and I have decided that our late summer adventure starts here at the Pacific Ocean and if all goes as planned will take us to the Atlantic. We are taking a few days to repack in Prescott. We were in San Diego staying at Joe's mom's little beach house for ten days. The days here follow a pleasant pattern. Joe takes long bike rides in the morning and boogie boards in the afternoon. I take walks in the morning and sometimes I bike with Joe. My afternoons are spent reading on the beach or exploring the nearby shops. In the evenings we walk to a restaurant to eat seafood or ... read more

Day 4 Tonight my focus is on my shoes. The soles are gooey with gum that I managed to step in at the little town of Beatty, Nevada. The sides of my Nikes are encrusted with salt from Badwater basin and the insides are filled with sand acquired as I walked up and down the Mesquite Flat dunes. Badwater Basin is the lowest point in the western hemisphere and, of course, we had to walk out into it. It's a strange, but beautiful place. The salt crystal formations were quite interesting. We made a quick stop at Furnace Creek for lunch and to check out the stores and it was fun to see one of the books that son Dave had designed on sale at the general store. After a leisurely stop at the old Harmony ... read more

Day 3 On our first day in the park, a ranger at the visitor center had told us that the Racetrack Playa was closed due to mud. Today the ranger said it was open so we four decided that this was something we should see. It took us almost three hours to get there and 35 miles was on dirt road. We drove through pretty Joshua Tree forests and stopped at Teakettle Junction for photos. Racetrack Playa is a giant dry lake bed where rocks (some of them 700 pounds) have somehow made their way across the lake bed forming tracks as they move. We were fascinated with the various directions and distances these rocks have moved. Some seemed to have traveled in simple straight lines while others would make circular tracks, or run in a ... read more

Day 1 We left Prescott early in the morning and fought snow, rain, and sleet all the way to Kingman. Saw two semi trailer trucks and at least six cars in the ditch along the way. When we arrived at the Death Valley entrance it was sunny and warm and beautiful. Our first stop was at the Zabriskie Point overlook. A short uphill walk led us to a panoramic vista of beautiful vibrantly colored badlands. Traveling five miles further we arrived at the Furnace Creek Ranch, our home for the next four nights. Our room wasn't ready so we spent a couple of hours at the visitor center watching the slide show and seeing the exhibits and driving around the Furnace Creek area. Of course, we picked up a bird checklist. We checked out the beautiful ... read more

Didn't have to go far to see this. The Annual Hash House Harriers Red Dress Fun Run was last night and the 500 runners(?) went right past the beach house after a beer stop at the Mission Bay Woman's Club. (Why isn't it called Women's Club?) Hash House Harriers is a world wide "drinking club with a running problem" and they have several runs a week and has members of all ages. This Red Dress Run is probably their most popular event in San Diego. It looked like they were having a lot of fun, if we lived here I think we'd join this group. A lot of the runners stopped to talk to us, tried to recruit us, and were more than eager to pose. I didn't send this blog to very many people, but ... read more
