Halifax in the FogHalifax in the FogHalifax in the Fog

The ferry was empty going to Halifax, full of worker commuters on the way back to Dartmouth
When we saw that Hurricane Gabriel would appear in Nova Scotia as heavy rain today, we decided that this would be the day to do make some ferry reservations for Newfoundland, do laundry, buy a new suitcase for me, and walk the streets of Halifax and we accomplished all four.

We love Costco in Prescott and we loved it here, too. Such fun to look at products not offered at our store and compare the prices which are much higher here. We are staying in Dartmouth which is across the Bedford Basin of the Atlantic from Halifax. When we got here we took a toll bridge across, but today we took the ferry to Halifax's waterfront and downtown. It was a foggy ferry trip and the harbor area food stands were locked up and buskers were few and far between. At the harbor displays we learned about the transatlantic cable and the earthquake that tore it up. There are many Titanic references here as some survivors were brought to Halifax and many that perished were buried here. As always, people were friendly and interesting. For the first time in "New Scotland" I felt a connection to my own Scottish heritage, the stores carry all things Scottish.

We are having a leisurely evening, but will be up early to head north to Cape Breton Island. I can put nice clean clothes in my nice new suitcase for the trip.

I think the fog/rain really adds to this photograph.

Fog
Yeah, the fog added to this photo, but didn't add much to our visit to the waterfront.

Newfoundland
Hope you get to go. WE made reservations and then the wind got bad. It was cancelled. Some day I would like to go back just to got there. Especially since so many Americans who got delayed there 9/11 came away with such wonderful stories and many have returned to visit again. Check out the telephone directory. So many Scottish names. Did find one Steeples. There were lots of Morrisons. So much fun to read your blog. Sue texted me she has a contract on their house and it will close next week. She is there to finish cleaning out garage and any other thing that might still be around. That was a nice house for Jo and Glenn. Suppose you have heard all the bad news about Colorado and the rains. Mike has some pictures on Facebook he took. He says there is not a single canyon on the east face that had not had bad flooding. Lots of roads are out. Longmont is underwater on the south side.Pictures of Boulder (no football game tomorrow...no classes the last three days) and Estes Park look awful. Love, Lois

Newfoundland
We are scheduled to take the "short ferry" from North Sydney, NS to Port aux Basques, NL on Monday and the "long ferry" from Argentia, NL to North Sydney the next Saturday. We will have a sleeping cabin on the long ferry, I think it's 14 hours. Hope we have decent weather. It must have been really windy for your ferry to have been cancelled. Even though we saw rain from Hurricane Gabriel today, it wasn't very windy. Thanks for the Tucson news.

Today was the first day we haven't had heavy rain, fog, and cold... The South Metro is more fortunate than Boulder to Ft. Collins, serious flooding in Aurora and along Cherry Creek- but nothing like Lyons and Estes Park. I'm checking my atlas to figure out the long and short ferries-

Ferries
You're sweet to follow our routes. Long ferry: North Sydney NS to Argentia, Newfoundland and vice versa Short Ferry: North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. We have reserved a cabin for the 14 hour long ferry ride back, but just seats for the six hour ride over. I'm excited about Newfoundland, looks pretty in photos. Glad your home isn't where it could flood. All this rain this year is wild. It flooded in areas of Prescott, too.

Enjoy Newfoundland. We spent two weeks touring there. Hope you can go to the Viking village. Cheers, B&C
