Yesterday, Friday 10th June I left Cesky Krumlov for a long 421km journey across the country to town called Opava. I am visiting my friend Lenka who was my inspiration to visit Czech Republic. I left the hostel just after 8am and after 1 bus and 3 trains (the first of which was 45mins late and threw out all my connections) later, I reached my destination approximately 11 hours later. I was glad to see a friendly face at the end, or I should say 2 friendly faces: Lenka and her dog Tara!. View from the trains confirmed the whole country is green either by pasture or forest. Totally exhausted from doing nothing we crashed early. Next day, Saturday, Lenka drove us to a nearby village of Hradec nad Moravici, which is on the river Moravici. ... read more

It looked a little overcast this morning, but I decided to venture out anyway. I'm going on a little side trip to a nearby village call Trebon. This involved catching the bus back to Ceske Budejovice then another one the 1.5 hours to Trebon. It was a pleasant ride through the countryside, but I as glad I had read in the lonely bastard that the bus did not actually head into the village center but stopped 1.5km out of town on the main road. There was a family on the bus also who were Czech but seemed to be tourists to the area also and took my chance of getting off at the same stop they did. This was a good guess and I walked the sort distance into the village center. The village was nothing ... read more

Today I left Prague and headed about 3 hours south into the Southern Bohemian Region to a place I would discover is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. No wonder it was Unesco World Heritage listed in 1992. The place is beautiful in a real picture postcard way. The guy at the Prague hostel advised me it would not be necessary to book the Student Agency intercity coach as it was mid-week and there are not many tourists around. Well apparently he had not heard that the whole population of Japan was visiting the Czech Republic and they had chosen today to transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov - just like me. However, unlike me, their accommodation (probably quite a step up from my humble hostel) had advised them to pre-purchase tickets. ... read more

I'm having a bit more of a relaxing day today, after yesterdays marathon walking effort. The weather is beautiful this time of year, maybe a little warm for some, but I'm loving it. Had a leisurely wander around the back streets that were missed yesterday. Found a nice little bar where I sat for a few hours and had a couple of beer watching the passing trade and parade of numerous tourists. It's so easy to spot the tourist here, they are the ones walking around with one person in their group with their head bowed trying to read a map and work out where the hell they are. Put it down!! Look up! Look around! You can't get lost and if you do you can always stop for a beverage and consult a map! Unfortunately, ... read more

Today I did a free walking tour, actually I did 2 free walking tours. Although they are not actually free as you are expected to give a tip. But it was well worth the small fee that I ended up donating. Jana was our guide (me and 2 other Australians in the morning tour) and as expected she was full of interesting information, dates and names that I instantly forgot. But it was good way to see the inner city and it's sights even if I did not remember all the info she spruced the 2 1/2 hours, Jana was also full of funny stories and a few ghost tales as well. Of which I am not going to share with you, go do the tour yourself. A couple of trivial facts I do remember: Prague ... read more

I was happy I'd decided to give Paris a miss and fly the same day to Prague. Besides the weather being wet and cold I knew Paris would be expensive even for a short stop over. As it was I had to travel the 40km from Orly airport to CDG airport which costs 19 euro = aud $27. My only other option was to get a bus, train, metro, bus which would have been cheaper but I had been traveling for like 30 hours and this option did not appeal to even a miser like me. I sat in CDG airport people watching for a few hours waiting for my flight. Airports are abuzz with activity and it's always interesting people watching in locations like this. My flight was delayed 1 hour due to traffic over ... read more

It was an early start from home, still dark and cold. I drove my car to Coolangatta Airport with Lyn (my sister and my usual and sorely missed travel companion) who had smartly spent the night due to the necessity of our early rise this morning. Cobi and Tammy (my sister and niece and farewell party) were already at the airport when we arrived, We had some airport breakfast after checking in my bag which was 1kg over the allowed 15kg but was waved on. Good start!. Flight Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur 8 hours 10 minutes! The annoying woman sitting next to me spent more money on in flight food and drinks than I paid for my flight - which was not that cheap at Aud$400. Then of course she had the need to wake ... read more
