I was happy I'd decided to give Paris a miss and fly the same day to Prague. Besides the weather being wet and cold I knew Paris would be expensive even for a short stop over. As it was I had to travel the 40km from Orly airport to CDG airport which costs 19 euro = aud $27. My only other option was to get a bus, train, metro, bus which would have been cheaper but I had been traveling for like 30 hours and this option did not appeal to even a miser like me.
I sat in CDG airport people watching for a few hours waiting for my flight. Airports are abuzz with activity and it's always interesting people watching in locations like this. My flight was delayed 1 hour due to traffic over Paris, but when we finally took off it was less than 2 hours later that we were again getting ready to land. Touch down in Prague was at 4pm local time and I smiled to myself when the Captain announced it was 28 degrees. Glad the bad weather was left behind in France.
I had booked a hostel in the center of Prague
and caught a shuttle bus from the airport which dropped me nowhere near it. I had no idea what direction to head as I had no map and when I asked the driver he became suddenly very annoyed and lost his earlier ability to understand or speak English. I always find this amusing this ability of being able to turn intelligence on and off. But I was not going to let this spoil my first impression of this undiscovered city. I just followed the main flow of pedestrian traffic and after just 15 minutes found myself in the main square and minutes later struggling to get my suitcase up the flight of stairs to the reception of my hostel for the next 3 nights. At less than aud $20 per night this hostel was a bargain as the location was excellent. Right in the center, it bragged it was walking distance to everything.
First thing I took a shower as I was starting to feel like I was fading. Another tick, fantastic shower, hot and great pressure. Somewhat refreshed I headed out to explore. Summer days are long in Europe, sunset is around 9pm and for this I was
pork and beer,
another 2 addictions??? broke my golden rule of eating on the main square. gratefully as I still had a few hours before it would be dark.
My first stop was an ice cream shop that was directly opposite the hostel entrance. This shop and several others scattered around the city were to become frequent stops for me, and this first stop just widened my already silly grin on my face.
Next I broke one of my golden rules of travel and ate at a place directly on the main square. We all know that these places are always the best location hence they are the most expensive. But how could I resist when there were little kiosks selling roast pork and ice cold pivo (beer) on tap. The smell was too much for me and my taste buds led me up to the counter and ordered some of that mouthwatering pork. The young guy at the beer tap looked at me and said 'of course a beer with that'? where I had no choice but to nod agreeing, 'and a big one?' he added where I just continued to nod. This cost me a grand total of czk310 = aud$17.48 which was absolutely outrageous, but man was
roasting pork
how could I resist? it yummy. Later meals I was much more frugal, but this was a nice indulgence.
OK so now filled with ice cream, pork and beer I was fit enough to take in the amazing buildings that lined this square.
