Today the people of Morocco must go and vote yes or no to the new Constitution the King released back in June. Not sure if the rest of the outside world is aware of this as I'm sure this sort of news would not make headlines in Australia. Perhaps just a small paragraph on page 12 of the newspaper. But this is not a political article this is just a story of what I have observed the past week in Azrou. There has been plenty of campaigning through the streets of Azrou, but this is all very peaceful and musical. There is always music involved, no matter what the occasion. Perhaps that is an African thing, whether it be a funeral, a wedding, a birth or a political campaign there is always music and singing. But ... read more

Monday Just over two hours by train (15.40euros return) out of Rome is a beautiful city called Orvieto. Actually, there are many beautiful towns and cities as viewed from the train, but this is the one I chose to visit today, thanks to the blog of Miss Expatria again! Situated on the flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. The site of the city is among the most dramatic in Europe, rising above the almost-vertical faces of tuff cliffs that are completed by defensive walls built of the same stone. To get to the top of the acropolis you need to catch a funicular, which cost only 90 euro cents and included the bus ride to the center. The trip up took only a few minutes and immediately at the top I was rewarded ... read more

Sunday Another hotter than hell day to where else to go but the Vatican for some salvation?! But my first stop was the huge Sunday market at Ponte Palatino. I walked the short distance to the train station that was also the bus interchange as I knew I could get a bus to the markets from here. Seemed that all the other tourists in Rome were armed with this information also, so unfortunately is was over an hour before it was my turn to board a bus. By now I was almost total cooked and then endured a 45 minute bus ride with 500 other overcooked tourists crammed into a 40 seater bus. I was happy to get off the bus and just about crawled up one of the water fountain taps trying to rehydrate and ... read more

Saturday Lazy start to the morning, after breakfast my first stop was the internet cafe to do a little house keeping and catchup on any news I may need to know. I had received a pesky email from Ryan Air trying to temp me with el cheapo flights all over Europe. Their strategy was good as before I had left the cafe I had booked and paid for a flight from Fez to Madrid for the end of July. A cheap flight to visit my friends Dean and Alex seemed to good to pass up. My destination today is the Aquaduct Park which is just on the outskirts of Rome and very easily reachable via the metro. Again this was a destination that I stole from a blog I found on the internet and credit goes ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Frascati June 17th 2011

Friday. Today I decided to do a little trip outside Rome to explore the town of Frascati. I found a blog on the internet describing this easy trip out of the city so I decided to give it a go. The fact that the blog mentioned lunch which consisted of roasted pork and local wine, may just have had a hand in persuading me to venture out. The blog, which I had printed out before leaving home, gave very easy to follow instructions of how to get to Frascati. I walked the 5 minutes from the hostel to Termini train station, this is another reason I like to stay at this hostel it's very close to transport. After purchasing the return ticket for just 3.80 euro I was on the 11.54am train out of Rome. The ... read more

Thursday. It's hot! And it was hot last night in the dorm room. No air con. Slept ok no snores in the room just a little outside traffic noise. I think the hostel has changed hands since I stayed here last year, it seems to have come down a few notches, but at 26euro per night it's still one of the cheapest beds in Rome. They still offer continental breakfast - stale bread with butter and jam and weak coffee, but at least it's something to start the day with. Shower was hot with lots of pressure so that made me happy. :-) I have no plans for today just going to walk around. After last years visit I am semi comfortable about my way around Rome from the hostel starting point. So I spent the ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » South Moravian Region » Brno June 15th 2011

Early start this morning, I have a few hours traveling before I reach Brno where I will be flying from tonight. I caught the 8.19 bus from Lenka’s place into Opava where I had a short walk to the train station and a little wait for the 9.27 train from Opava to Ostrava. Then I boarded the 10.45 train to Brno. It was raining part of the way but by the time we reached Czech’s second largest city it was again sunny and hot. I was able to store my bag at the train station (after begging for change to put in the coin slot) and go out exploring the town a little. I have most of the day before my flight this evening, so I spent the time wandering around the city. Seemed I was ... read more

Monday, Lenka had to go back to work so I had a nice rest day by myself. In the afternoon I tagged along for the daily dog walk, since I'd been sitting around doing nothing all day. We had a lovely stroll through the forest and 10km later we were on the home stretch walking along a tree lined roadway and were able to snack on some cherries straight from the tree. Cherry trees are everywhere throughout the country and free to whoever wants to help themselves. And to think I paid half a fortune for a punnet of cherries in Prague. Also planted along the roadside were plum, pear and other fruit trees which were still to come into fruit. In season going for a walk is a variable fruit salad feast. Tuesday, I caught ... read more

Today is Sunday, a beautiful sunny summers day and Lenka has offered to take me for a drive. After about 1 1/2 hours of driving through lots of quaint little villages and open farmland we reached outrdestination of Raztoka. In winter this area is a ski resort but in the summer is very popular for hiking and family days out. Being a ski resort of course we were at the base of mountains and I was more than relieved to see we would ascend the summit via a very long chairlift. Obviously this chairlift is used to carry snow skiers to the snow fields in winter, when it would be blanketed in an unknown depth of snow, but it seems just as popular in summer for day trippers to travel to the top of Mt Radhost ... read more
