Wednesday 17th - day sixteen Zak took the french couch surfers into the forest today for a short walk. They wanted to see monkeys in the wild and they did. I stayed home. They left later in the day. Thursday 18th - day seventeen It's official! I'm turning into a hibernating bear! Each day I sleep longer and eat less. A lot of food is not necessary when the only physical thing I do is get out of bed, shower, catch a taxi to Zak's parents for breakfast, walk the short distance to the cafe, drink coffee for a few hours then return home and eat again only to sleep the day away again. That's the cycle of routine I have now fallen into. Friday 19th - day eighteen Tonight as we sat in the cafe, ... read more

Monday 15th - day fourteen Same, same no different! Now that's an expensive mattress! Heard a bit of town gossip I'd like to share with you, although during Ramadan we are not supposed to be gossiping or talking ill of others. But I heard this story in the dark and I am retelling it now in the dark. There is a family who live in the building next door to Zak's parents. who have a son who somehow ended up living and working in Switzerland. I'm not sure how this came about weather it was done legally or not but this fact is irrelevant to my story. The son has been living there for about 6 years and like a good son makes regular trips home to see his parents and family. These visits home every ... read more

Friday 12th - day eleven Same routine, nothing to report. Why does orange come out pink? I remembered a little story I can tell you about to bulk out this non event day a little. Remember the other day when I told you about the flash hail storm we had and I mentioned that I had just put in a load of washing, and then I got drenched closing the wooden shutters to prevent the window panes from being broken by the hail? Well since I was so wet from the rain anyway, I decided to go and have a hot shower. In the little blue room is also the water outlet for the washing machine so as I stood there shampooing my hair I was suddenly startled by a burst of water being emptied into ... read more

Monday 8th - day seven HAPPY BIRTHDAY MITCH! Still at it. This morning, which was really this afternoon, but was our morning as we just woke up - if you think you are confused how do you think I feel living it?! Anyway 'our' this morning we went to the little souk just up the street from here. Not sure if I want to try and brave the big souk tomorrow with no water intake. It's just too hot and dusty to not have a drink of water at the big souk. We just went to purchase some vegetables and to try and find a new bed sheet for my bed as I put my foot through the old one last night. No luck with finding a sheet but we did stock up on some veggies. ... read more

Friday 5th Awoke at 1.30 pm today, a little later than the last few days. At least my ears have stopped ringing from last nights entertainment. Sorry folks nothing much to report about for today. Much the same routine as the last couple of days. I've still managed to stick to the complete fasting - nil by mouth - during the daylight hours. It's actually a lot easier than I expected, but remember I am not actually doing anything during the day that requires sustenance. Me and most of the rest of the country! Saturday 6th Slept even later today until 2.30pm, granted I did not go to bed until almost 7am!! Am starting to keep the hours of a Vampire!! Thursday Again I slept until 1pm. Surely there must be some sound outside or something that is waking me at exactly the same time everyday. Or perhaps my natural body clock is aware of the limit of time that I can endure with nil intake. If that is the case my natural body clock is smarter than my head and is so far doing a good job!! I forgot to write a little story in yesterdays blog that happened at breakfast last night. We had arrived just before 7.30pm and the table was already laid out with food. There was a fish dish with tonight's offerings and when we entered the room we were engulfed in the strong aroma. It doesn't matter what it is if you haven't eaten all day the smell of any food ... read more

Wednesday Today again I woke at 1pm having gone to bed just before 6am - got sucked into a good movie on the box. It is a little warmer today so hopefully this will not make it harder to resist the urge to have a drink - but I will if I need it. I had to walk to the post office as I wanted to get some stamps to send off a post card. Of course the post office was closed as they are keeping Ramadan hours and closed earlier than usual but it was a nice little walk for me. I had to go via the center and the waiter from the Cedar Hotel cafe (the only cafe in the center open all day) was trying to call me over to have a coffee. ... read more

Tuesday - day one I woke up at 1pm and my first thought was 'hey only about 6 hours to go'. Am I going to be constantly wishing the time away? This was an unconscious thought! Zak is still asleep in the salon and did not stir until closer to 2. As I look out the window all looks normal in the street. Today is souk day and there are the normal stalls set up down on the foot path selling their wares. There is a very strong smell of harira soup in the air and this just happens to be a soup I really like and enjoyed every day in the colder months last year. It's made from lentils, chickpeas, tomatoes and a good dose of spices. It will be torture if I have to ... read more

Monday 1st, day before Ramadan It's the first of the month and as the moon has not been sighted here yet, unlike the rest of the Muslim world, Morocco is not starting Ramadan until tomorrow. Fine with me. It's an nice warm, sunny day so I opt to join our American couch surfer Jonathan for a short hike (yes me hike!) in the nearby forest. The mountain guide of the house (namely Zak) could not be bothered with a walk today so he has given verbal instructions to my new guide, who is fresh from New York City and I'm hoping armed with a good sense of direction or skills of a boy scout in case we get lost. We head up out of town and Jonathan seems to be following the verbal instructions like he ... read more

Monday As you all know, my current abode is in Azrou, Morocco and Morocco is a Muslim country. And the time of Ramadan is soon upon us. Don't worry like most of you I had no idea what this Ramadan thing was all about and due to the fact most of you reading this are not Muslims we have no need or even the curiosity to know. Ah - it's just one of those stupid religious things that those crazy scarf wearing peoples are doing. I'll admit these were my thoughts too and I did not really concern myself with finding out about it as it did not really concern me. But of course now it's different for me. Don't panic I am not about to accept Islam and start wearing a head scarf, but since ... read more
