Linda and I decided to spend our summer vacation with my parents in Thailand and then Malaysia, revisiting the places where I had gone to high school from 1966-68. We flew Malaysian Airlines departing Frankfurt, with a refueling stop in Bahrain, arriving in Kuala Lumpur on 2 July. We stayed overnight in Kuala Lumpur, and although we were very tired we ate satay at a nearby restaurant before turning in for the night. We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok the next morning and arrived about 1 pm. My parents were at the airport to greet us. We relaxed the next two days and saw some of the sights, such as the Grand Palace. We drove to the Rose Gardens to see the Thai cultural show, and then on to Hua Hin, where we enjoyed the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome April 15th 1983

One exception to the norm of taking long weekend trips to Switzerland and the French Riviera from Stuttgart was the trip to Rome. My Mom flew to Rome from Thailand, and her psychiatrist friend Mary, who had previously traveled to France and Switzerland with us in 1978, flew into Rome from the States. Friday after work, we took the normal transportation for a weekend trip to a distant destination, the overnight train with reservations for two couchettes. The train departed Boblingen about 6:30 pm and went directly to Rome...quite convenient. We shared the six-bed couchette compartment with two older German couples. They were on their way to Ischia off the coast of Naples. Normally one sleeps in their clothes in the couchette compartment as you are usually sharing it with strangers. However, our new German friends ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District December 22nd 1982

22 December 1982 Wednesday. We took a tour with a couple dozen others to the Holy Land for Christmas. We flew EL Al from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv. The security was very tight. A bus took us from the terminal to the plane that was parked at a remote corner of the parking apron. We identified our luggage before we boarded the plane. Otherwise, it was an uneventful flight. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv and after checking through customs and immigration, our tour bus took us to the Hilton in Jerusalem, where we had dinner and an introduction to the Holy land. 23 December 1982 Thursday. We took a walking tour of Old Jerusalem through the Jaffa Gate, along the Via de la Rosa with its Stations of the Cross where Christ walked to his crucifixion, ... read more

North America » United States August 7th 1982

As we had just been to the States for Christmas and my Grandfather Northcott's 95th birthday the previous December, we decided to skip seeing our families during our home leave of 1982. Instead we would head directly to the West Coast. 7 August 1982 Saturday. We flew from Frankfurt to JFK and from JFK to San Francisco, arriving late that night, or early in the morning Stuttgart time. I was too tired to pay much attention when initialing the various boxes on the rental car contract, something I would realize when I turned the car in and ended up paying for insurance for the whole time. Lesson one: next time stay overnight at JFK and catch an early flight to the west coast arriving much fresher. We would do this on subsequent trips. 8 August 1982 ... read more

In the summer of 1982 Linda and Bob took a trips with Steve and Kay and their boys to northern Italy over an extended Memorial Day weekend. 28 May 1982 Friday. After work Linda and Bob drove to Oberammergau where we spent the night with Steve and Kay and their boys. 29 May 1982 Saturday. The next morning all of us drove in separate cars to Innsbruck, Austria and then over the Brenner Pass to Lake Garda, driving along the western lakeshore until we reached Sirmione. This town is on a peninsula jutting up from the southern shore. We checked into our hotel and then walked around the town and out the peninsula to the ruins of a Roman palace. It was a perfect day with a blue sky and lake with snow capped alps at ... read more

North America » United States » New York » Nyack December 12th 1981

My parents took another two year furlough, living in Nyack again from the summer of 1980 to the summer of 1982. They wanted us to come to the States for the Christmas of 1981 and to celebrate my Grandfather Northcott’s 95th birthday. I also had business to attend to in Florida. 12 - 17 December 1981 Saturday through Thursday. We flew from Frankfurt to Miami where my sister Sue and husband Rob picked us up at the airport on Saturday afternoon. On Monday I took care of business that would make me a Florida resident as I had no intention of ever moving back to Virginia, and didn't want to keep paying state taxes to that state. We toured around the West Palm Beach area with them. Our new nephew, Brendan, loved to eat at McDonalds ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London September 14th 1981

This year the annual Engineering Conference was held in London. Joe, Carol, Linda and I decided to drive there and spend a few days after the conference visiting the southern coast of England on the way home. On Monday we drove directly to London via the Calais to Dover ferry. After the business meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we were able to spend the evenings taking in some of the cultural aspects of London, including theater. Linda’s tourist passport was about to expire so we took advantage of being across from the U.S. Embassy to go there to renew it. The British guard at the entrance (the U.S. Marine was inside) looked at her about to expire passport and told her that the picture was not her. Linda was taken aback. Then he explained that ... read more

When we lived in Glan Munchweiler we took a trip to the French Riviera in conjunction with a weeklong trip that included northern Italy. After moving to Boblingen, we soon learned that we could do a number of longer distance trips over three day weekends by taking overnight trains sleeping in the couchette compartments. After work on Friday evening we would drive either to Kehl, Germany or Strasbourg, France where we would catch the the 7 pm train directly to Antibes, arriving about 8 am the next morning. We would check into the Hotel Royal located right across from the sandy beach on the Cap D'Antibes side of town. We would then spend Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings until about 1 pm on the beach. Sometimes we would walk the one kilometer over to the Juan ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West May 29th 1981

During our four years in Boblingen, we took weekend trips to the following destinations: for two day weekends we traveled Bavaria, including Rothenberg, Munich, and Oberammergau; to the Bernese Oberland section of the Swiss Alps; and for three day holiday weekends it was by overnight train to Antibes, on the French Riviera. This entry describes our trips to Switzerland. As they could occur on any weekend, they were usually spur of the moment decisions depending on the weather. If we woke up on a Saturday morning, and the sun was shining and we had nothing else planned, we would hop in our car and drive south via the autobahn passing Singen, Zurich, and Lucern and arrive at our destination of Steckelburg, a small village at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley south of Interlaken (also the ... read more

Linda’s sister Shirley was marrying Trevor at his hometwon in Northern Ireland. She had met Trevor while he was attending seminary in the U.S. To get to the wedding we bought a two week Eurailpass and took the train from Stuttgart to Paris where we met up Linda’s mom and sister Shirley. We toured Paris for a couple days, seeing everything between the Notre Dame and Louvre and the Eifel Tower. We then took the train to Cherbourg where we caught the ferry to Rosslare, Ireland. The crossing was only supposed to be 17 hours overnight, but due to the heavy seas it took 24 hours. I did not do well. Linda said my face was green the whole trip, which I spent in my bunk. I have seafaring heritage in my ancestry. My great grandfather ... read more
