North America » United States July 17th 1988

I have put off writing this account, but realize if I am ever going to complete the record of all my trips I have to get over this hurdle. 17 July 1988 Sunday. By now we had learned that if we were going to fly through JFK on the way to somewhere else in the U.S. it was better to stay overnight at a hotel near JFK, because late afternoon thunderstorms were likely to create havoc with all further flights that day. So we flew from Brussels to JFK and checked into our nearby hotel, just as everyone else whose flights we cancelled were looking for rooms for the night. 18 - 23 July 1988 Monday through Saturday. So with jet lag on Monday we caught a very early morning flight to West Palm Beach where ... read more

Europe » Italy June 8th 1988

Our next NATO Infrastructure Committees visit was to Italy. I had been looking forward to this trip ever since arriving at NATO, as Italy is perhaps my favorite country in Europe from the perspective of all its history and art, and of course the food. For the first time Linda was unable to accompany me as my parents couldn't come to babysit Tamara (2 years 4 months) and Rosanna (8 months), as my Dad's health was deteriorating, and besides, we would be taking home leave back to visit them a month later. 8 June 1988 Wednesday. The committee members and their spouses gathered as usual at Melsbroek Air Base, shared with Zaventum Airport in Brussels. We boarded an Italian military jet for the two hour journey to Istrana Air Base, just north of Venice. Upon arrival ... read more

We always took a vacation for a week every spring. Often it was to the British Isles, as we loved lambing season with all the daffodils and tulips blooming. However, we hadn't been to Antibes in three years, and this would be the first visit with children. My committe wasn't meeting on May 12th, so on Friday, May 6th we headed south by way of Luxembourg. Metz, Nancy, Dijon, and Lyons where we got on the Autoroute to the Sun. At just over 700 miles, it is a long drive, not to be repeated again. Out next trip to Antibes would be seven years later in 1995, and we took the train. At least this time we had our car with us which came in handy for visiting Cannes and the hilltop towns such as St ... read more

North America » United States » Florida December 20th 1987

We flew back to the States on December 20th for Christmas in Lake Worth, Florida with my parents and sisters Sue, Judy and Carol, along with their families. My Dad was now on dialysis since October. He seemed to be doing well although his diet was restricted, and had to follow a rigid schedule. This was the first Christmas, or any other holiday for that matter, that the whole family was together in many years. This was also the first opportunity for the family to see Rosanna, who was only two months old. We didn't go far from home; seeing the local sights like an animal safari park, canoeing at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, visiting the beaches at Singer Island and Jupiter Island, etc. We then flew to Pittsburgh, and drove to New Castle, Pennsylvania to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria August 7th 1987

As we had already done some travel this year and we would be going back to the States for Christmas. Besides, Linda was due to deliver our second child, Rosanna, in October. So we decided for our summer vaction to take a trip where we could stay in one place for a week. We hadn't been to Lake Chiemsee, south of Munich and at the base of the German Alps, since 1978 so I checked into what we could do there. I found out the the Armed Forces Recreation Center offered a six day "Learn to Sail" week with Red Cross Certification. Linda didn't think she would be able to do any sailing, but was more than pleased to be able to relax around the hotel. Besides, we could explore the countryside after my lessons, much ... read more

Europe » Italy April 17th 1987

My parents had volunteered to babysit Tamara while we went to Portugal. We returned on a Monday and four days later the Easter holiday week began. We took this opportunity to take Mom and Dad for a nine day vacation to some of our favorite places in Europe. 17 April 1987 Good Friday. We drove from Brussels to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. On the way we drove down the Rhine River from Coblenz to Bingen to see the many castles that dotted this most interesting stretch of the Rhine before returning the the autobahn to Rothenburg. We arrived at Rothenburg about 3 pm. We stayed with our farmer friends in their zimmerfrei, the couple we had first stayed with some ten years earlier when we lived in Germany. We talked with them a bit before heading ... read more

Europe » Portugal April 6th 1987

Our next NATO Infrastructure Committee visit was to Portugal. Mom and Dad volunteered to babysit Tamara, so that Linda could go. Linda was now three months pregnant with our second child. So this would be her third trip while pregnant; the others being Norway and Germany in 1985. My parents arrived in Brussels on 2 April, so they had a few days before we left to settle in. 6 April 1987 Monday. The committee members and spouses met at Zaventum Airport in Brussels where we caught a commercial flight on TAP to Lisbon. The committee then proceded to the Ministry of Defense for lunch, briefings, and an overview of what we would see in the coming week. Following this meeting we checked into our hotel where we had the rest of the evening free. Several of ... read more

North America » United States December 12th 1986

I was concerned with my Dad's health, and now that we had a child whom the grandparents wanted to see more often, we decided to spend as much time in the United States as possible in the coming years. So in addition to home leave that I earned every other year (i.e., 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1994), we spent our 1986 and 1987 Christmas holidays and a post Christmas holiday in February 1989 with family in the States. 12 December 1986 Friday. We also traveled elsewhere within the States, since we were there. We flew from Brussels to Los Angeles, arriving at about 9 pm, which with the time difference was about 9 am the next day in Brussels. We rented a car and then headed for our nearby hotel. It was a long flight ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England September 16th 1986

For some reason Denmark and the UK always combined their trips. Denmark also had the distinction of not letting their delegate to the Infrastructure Committees take his wife on these trips, and consequently our spouses were not invited on the trip to Denmark. Therefore our spouses had to meet up with us when we arrived in Scotland. As my sister Carol was living with us, she babysat Tamara, allowing Linda to go with the other wives. 16 September 1986 Tuesday. We departed on a Danish military cargo aircraft from Melsbroek Air Base in Brussels to Karup Air Base on the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark. Upon arrival we had briefings and then toured the various airfield facilities funded by the Infrastructure program. We then had lunch hosted by the Danish military. Then we reboarded the plane for ... read more

North America » United States August 2nd 1986

This would be our second home leave after moving to Brussels. This would be first time that Tamara, who was born on 26 January, would see the rest of her family in the States. She had met her grandmothers; both Linda and my Mom's right after she was born, as they had come in sequential visits to help Linda recover from walking pneumonia shortly after Tamara was born. Tamara had seen Uncle Tom in April on our visit to England with him. Tamara had seen her Aunt Carol who had moved to Brussels and was living with us. Now she would see the rest of her uncles and aunts and cousins. 2 August 1986 Saturday. We flew into Washington Dulles and stayed with friends Jim and Linda who had been co-sponsors of the senior high young ... read more
