Europe » United Kingdom » England November 4th 1993

Buz and Kathy visited us in Europe every few years. This visit would be their last. It seemed to be a bit unusual that they would come at this time of the year, but it turns out that Kathy had her sabbatical from school, and wanted to do some research on European and British school systems. In any case, it was great to have them...and a good excuse for another trip. They arrived on Tuesday, 2 November and had a couple days to recouperate from jet lag before we hit the road. 4 November 1993 Thursday. We drove from Overijse to Calais where we caught the ferry to Dover. With the near completion of the Channel Tunnel, the quality of the ferries had drastically improved...horray for competition. We had lunch on the ferry so that we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Figline Valdarno July 24th 1993

On even years our summers were dominated by home leave back in the States. Odd years we spent our summers exploring Europe. Two years earlier, from 10 -25 August 1991, we had visited Berlin and Dresden in former East Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary just before the end of the Soviet Union. The last time we had been south to Switzerland and Italy was the Spring of 1989, before Will was born and the girls were too young to remember the vacation. Now that he was almost four, the kids were now old enough to understand and enjoy their travels. My Canadian colleague at NATO recommended a villa in Tuscany that he and his wife and many from his delegation had stayed at on previous vacations. So we booked an apartment in ... read more

Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire June 11th 1993

The day after school was out we went on the first of two summer vacations...this one to the French Atlantic Coast. Staying at hotels with three kids was turning out to be quite expensive as hotels charged by the bed rather than by the room. We learned about Pierre et Vacnaces, a resort company similar to Club Med, but without the food, thus costing much less. So we decided to reserve a room at the Port Bourgenay Pierre et Vacances resort at the Vendee region of France. It turned out to be a great place, and we would stay at another Pierre et Vacances resort on the French Riviera in April 1995. 11 June 1993 Friday. We left early from our home in Overijse, Belgium and three hours later were checking into the Sequoia Lodge at ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cornwall April 2nd 1993

It was springtime and time to go to England again. This time we had made reservations at a farm cottage in Cornwall, a part of England we had never been to before. 2 April 1993 Friday. We drove from Overijse to Calais and caught the ferry to Dover. From there we skirted around the southern side of London and then headed southwest until the we reached the A303 which took us to Stonehenge. We stopped and walked around the assemblage of massive stones, which were placed precisely to align with the solstices and equinoxes; and other than astronomical purposes also served as a site for Druid ceremonies. We then continued west and then up the A36 to Bath. We found Robin and Rhona's home where we would stay two nights. The kids had fun playing with ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas December 15th 1992

For our 20th wedding anniversary we decided to fly to Florida and take the Disney cruise to the Bahamas. So on December 15, 1992, a Tuesday, we flew from Brussels to JFK where we stayed the night at an airport hotel. Early the following morning we caught a flight from La Guardia to West Palm Beach. Mom, Sue and Ron and Brendan and Alyssa met us at the airport and we drove to our home in Lake Worth. On December 18th, a Friday, we drove up the coast to Port Canaveral where we boarded the Big Red Boat for a three day Disney cruise to the Bahamas. This was our first cruise. We checked in and found our cabin, and then returned to the deck for the departure festivities which included throwing spools of paper to ... read more

North America » United States July 16th 1992

16 July 1992 Thursday. We flew from Brussels to Washington Dulles, arriving mid afternoon. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Fairfax City, and watched the Presidential debates on TV. Ross Perot was very popular, with his emphasis on out of control Federal budgets and the national debt. Almost twenty years later this issue is still the top of the national debate, as nothing has been done to reduce spending and tax equitably. 17 - 19 July 1992 Friday through Sunday. We drove to Virginia Beach to visit Linda's brother Marlan, sister in law Arlene and their kids Ashley and Rhett. We went to the beach near Dam Neck, used by military families, as both Marlan and Arlene were Navy. We also toured Norfolk sights and the last day visited Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg. Middle East » Turkey April 27th 1992

We had been looking forward to this Infrastructure Committees visit to exotic Turkey for a long time, as I had only spent a couple days in Ankara, Turkey in relation to a bid dispute prior to this trip. Linda would be coming along, so this meant we had to find a babysitter for the kids. Fortunately, Steve and Carol volunteered. 27 April 1992 Monday. The committee members and their spouses met at NATO headquarters where we boarded a bus to the airport, and caught a flight to Ankara, the capital of Turkey. We arrived late afternoon, and checked into our hotel. We had the evening free, so Linda and I along with Mike and Betty accepted an invitation for dinner from a business associate. We had dinner at the Hilton. 28 April 1992 Tuesday. The committee ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Mutters February 14th 1992

It had been some time since Linda and I had been on a ski trip. By now the kids, or at least the girls, were getting to be old enough to learn to ski. Our church was sponsoring a week-long ski trip to Innsbruck, Austria, so we signed up knowing that we would be with good friends. So on Friday, February 14th, Valentines Day, we loaded up our car with our snow gear and drove part of the way to Innsbruck, and on Saturday completed the journey to the ski village of Igls, just south of Innsbruck. Our ski lessons were from Sunday through Friday. Linda decided to stay with Will and sled. She really never enjoed downhill skiing. Tamara, Rosanna, and I were assigned to our respective classses based upon our previous experience. The girls ... read more

North America » United States October 19th 1991

Having been the recipient of the hospitality of many NATO nations, I was looking forward to hosting the NATO Infrastructure Committees on a visit to my country - the United States of America. As Linda would play a major role in hosting the spouses, I brought her along. This meant that we needed baby sitters for our three kids. Mom and Carol volunteered. They arrived on October 16th. 19 October 1991 Saturday. We flew TWA from Brussels to JFK. Our aircraft parked the next gate over from the USAF 727 that would take us to Washington DC. USAF Protocol had arranged this and a special customs and immigration checkpoint between the two gates, so all we had to do was walk off, check through, and walk on; and we were on our way to DC. We ... read more

Europe August 10th 1991

I am publishing this blog on the 20th anniversary of the end of the Soviet Union, which is also 20 years after the events in this blog took place. This blog, falling on the last day of 2011, coincidentally also completes my effort to blog every trip I have taken since 1949. I originally wrote these blogs for my family and friends. However, it turns out that most of my readers are fellow travel bloggers, so these blogs are for you too. Working at NATO Headquarters from 1984 to 1995 gave me a front row seat to history; namely the end of the Cold War. I lived through the Reagan buildup, where in our case the NATO Infrastructure Program budget was tripled, thereby allowing NATO to build facilities to withstand anything the Warsaw Pact could throw ... read more
