Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Bernau am Chiemsee August 5th 1978

In August 1978 I had another business trip to a conference with the German Ministry of Defense officials at the Armed Forces Recreation Center on the southern shore of Lake Chiemsee. This was one of many former Nazi resorts taken over by U.S. forces. Again, during the day I had meetings, but afterwards Rich (a colleague who would also become a lifelong friend along with his wife Judy), Linda and I would tour the countryside between the lake and the German Alps. We would find a nice restaurant during our travels, and enjoy delicious schnitzel, sauerbraten, strudel and beer. On another day we took a boat out to Herrenchiemsee Island to see King Ludwig II castle by the same name. The castle was modeled upon King Loius XIV's Versailles. Our conference was cut short because our ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Tirrenia July 8th 1978

In July 1978 I had a business trip to Camp Darby, Italy near Pisa and Livorno to inspect and accept 77 ammunition bunkers into the Air Force inventory. I decided to take Linda along and add a few days vacation to the trip. We drove down on Saturday, stopping just south of Lucerne, Switzerland at a nice hotel on Lake Luzern. Then it was over the Alps to Lake Como and Pisa, Italy where we climbed the Leaning Tower. We arrived at Camp Darby on Sunday afternoon. There we met my Corps of Engineers counterpart, Mike and his wife Betty. We would become lifelong friends. Most of the weekdays were spent on the job, but in the evenings we enjoyed going to restaurants on the beach in Tirrenia. The first evening we ordered pasta, and were ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Fussen June 17th 1978

I replaced my original text for this entry, as I recently recieved Kathy's detailed report of the trip which I have drawn upon for this entry. 15 June 1978 Thursday. Buz and Kathy arrived in Frankfurt at 7:30 am; one hour earlier than we expected them. We met up about 9 am. Linda dropped me off at my office on her way home, as I had to work. Unfortunately for Buz and Kathy I wasn't able to take much leave for the time they were visiting us. They rested up to recuperate from the long flight. After dinner we walked through the village, and then played Dutch Blitz. 16 June 1978 Friday. I had a meeting in Trier, which is the oldest city in Germany and where the Roman Emperor Constantine was born. I dropped them ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West May 20th 1978

In early May 1978 my Mom flew from Thailand to be with us for several weeks. I took her and Linda on a business trip to Jever Air Base, a German base in northern Germany that the USAF would use in wartime. We stayed and ate a small gasthaus. While eating, the landlord’s teenage kids, Jenny and Jurgen, noticed we spoke English. Soon we were helping them do their English homework. The next day while I was at the German air base, they took my Mom and Linda on a tour of the town. It was freezing cold and they insisted everyone have ice cream. In German the J is pronounced as a Y, so we will always remember the kindness of Yenny and Yurgen from Yever. After my meetings, we drove back to Ramstein via ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Erpfendorf January 7th 1978

Every January it was a tradition for the office to take a weeklong all inclusive ski trip to Erpfendorf, Austria, near St Johann and Kitzbuhl. On Saturday we would drive directly there and checked into the Larchenhof Hotel. Nan and Stacey, our neighbors from Glan Munchweiller, along with their kids Lowell and Allison, would convoy with us. Sunday morning after breakfast we were divided into groups by level of experience. Linda and I were grouped with the beginners. We proceeded to the bunny slope to learn how to snow plow and schuss. That was pretty much how we spent the rest of the day. The second day we were subdivided into slow beginners and fast beginners. This is when Linda and I were split up. The fast beginners then went to the top of the hill ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Rothenburg ob der Tauber December 10th 1977

In the lead up to the 1977 Christmas season we drove to the Kriskindelmarkt in Nuremburg, but it was so crowded we decided to head back to Rothenberg ob der Tauber, the quintessential romantic walled medieval town in northern Bavaria, for the night. We arrived late but just in time to stop at the tourist office to see if they could find us a room. By a stroke of good fortune they found us a room in a farm located on the northern outskirts of town. An old farmer and his wife welcomed us with big smiles and showed us the room in their attic. It was very nice, although the ceilings slanted. They told us to be careful not to bump out heads when getting out of the tub. They next morning we joined them ... read more

On August 17th after an all night MAC flight from McGuire AFB in New Jersey, my sponsor met me at the Rhein Main airport and drove the two hours to my hotel in Ramstein village. I checked into the hotel where I would stay until I found an apartment to rent. The village is next to the air base where I would work as a civil engineer and project manager for NATO Infrastructure projects at the headquarters of U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Housing was in very tight supply, but I used a local real estate agent and in about three weeks found a duplex in Glan Munchweiler, a small farming village about 16 kilometers northwest of the base. There was only one other American family in the village, Nan and Stacy, and we became good ... read more

Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Keflavik June 1st 1977

Each year I attended the annual SACLANT Infrastructure Conference in Brussels. This would be my second conference. On the way there I decided to kill two birds with one stone and scheduled meetings in Iceland. 1 – 3 June 1977 Wednesday through Friday. My trip to Bermuda was quickly followed by a trip to Iceland, to conduct the acceptance inspection for the NATO fuel pier at Hvalfjordur. On Wednesday, I flew to Keflavik. Thursday and Friday we met at Hvalfjordur to conduct the acceptance inspection, and also did the maintenance and readiness inspection for the rest of the depot. 4 – 5 June 1977 Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I flew to London for the weekend and saw a play that evening. Sunday I toured the town a bit. 6 – 10 June 1977 Monday through Friday. ... read more

North America » Bermuda » Hamilton May 22nd 1977

22 May 1977 Sunday. The only trip I took Linda on was to Bermuda. The official part was for three days where I was to conduct an acceptance inspection for an ammunition storage compound. We flew Eastern Airlines from Washington National to Bermuda, and I can understand why they went bankrupt. The stewardess was passing around candy and when she got to us, she told us that there wasn’t enough for everyone so passed us by. I was too shocked to respond. We never flew Eastern again. We stayed at a small boutique hotel on the hill above Hamilton. We ate at the hotel restaurant the first evening. We should have realized that the meal was going to be expensive when the maitre de brought the menu without prices. It was a great meal, but we ... read more

I had the privilege of volunteering on a construction team that was sent to Guatemala to rebuild churches after the massive 1976 earthquake. Although I am an engineer I didn’t have much actual construction experience after I left Thailand in July 1975; and even then I was the construction manager and didn't actually have to build anything. So for the couple months before the trip I took a bricklaying course with the adult education program at the local high school. By early March I was ready to go. 5 March 1977 Saturday. On a Saturday morning I flew from Washington Dulles to New Orleans to Meridian, Mexico to Guatemala City, arriving late afternoon. I was met at the airport by the missionary who was organizing the team. As there were others arriving from all over the ... read more
