A typical street in the Old Quarter
A typical street in the Old Quarter
There is usually no break in the traffic so you just have to walk slowly and hope that everyone drives around you...kind of crazy!
We've been here for a few days now, spent 3 nights in the city and did a couple days in Halong Bay (write about there in another blog). We've added photos to the last Bangkok blog as well for you to check out. We arrived the night of the 28th (Saturday) on a late flight. Eight of us non-asians ended up congregating together after the baggage claim, all kind of looking around to figure out where we go, where we get money, and turning away the touts trying to offer us rides. We ended up getting a taxi with an English [View Full Entry]

Located at Wat Pho, this thing was HUGE!
Three and a half days in Bangkok, and we're ready to move on to Vietnam. It's a cool city--very full on--but we've enjoyed it. Very hot and humid, but kind of reminds me of Nebraska summers! Definately not as intense as we thought it would be, though it probably helped that we'd already been in country for a few weeks, touristy as it may have been in the islands. Apologies âgain for no pics...we will try to find a computer to get them on soon! So much to tell you about... We found a good little guesthouse room at Baan Sabai, [View Full Entry]

Our last afternoon (Saturday) in Bangkok, and we are spending it in an internet cafe because it is air conditioned...extremely hot out there today! ________________________________________________________ Our few hours wait in Chumphorn was lovely so I wanted to devote a blog to it because it probably doesn't get much attention :). (we were there on the 23rd May) No photos yet because I can't download them on this computer, but I'll add some soon. Just a small town that is mainly just a transfer point for travellers, we were dropped off at the Farang Bar for a few hours. (Just to note, [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Bangkok yesterday, but we're just catching up with the past few days on our last island. Oh, and we added a couple of photos on the last blog, too. ______________________________________________________________ We spent the 19th to the 23rd in Koh Tao, a little island north of Koh Phangan. The ferry ride was bit rough, and I just managed to keep my breakfast down! Such a cool little place, we both really enjoyed this island. It's world-reknowned for the diving--pretty much every few meters in the town was a dive shop. However, we made the decision to save a lot [View Full Entry]

Well, we were driving on the roads, but this is what it was like, plus many steep hills
We've been in Ko Pha Ngan since the 15th. We are finally experiencing the rainy season. Having a great time, but more on that later... First, we must share our scam with readers in hopes that it saves someone else going through the same $#@! that we did...Apoligies for the negativity...I promise, its not long _________________________________________________ We booked our travel from Lanta to Pha Ngan through a travel agent in Lanta. This included 2 different mini-buses and a fast ferry. The mini-buses--a mini-van with 12 people squeezed in, thank goodness for the a/c-- were fine, we had a lot of waiting [View Full Entry]

The one good thing about this place...
We learned the hard way really not to trust the travel agencies here... Before leaving Phi Phi, we booked a bungalow at a resort in Ko Lanta based on a brochure and the "nice" woman. She said we were getting a low season deal. When we arrived we discovered a run down room and that we couldn've paid much less than we did. The price we paid for trying to do something "planned"! Kind of a bummer, but oh well. I was still in recovery mode so wee just chilled for a few days. Our resort has a small pool and [View Full Entry]

Our first beach at Phi Phi
Our first beach at Phi Phi
We stayed in a little bungalow just a few feet away from this beach on the first night.
(Again, backdated...) the morning of the 9th we got a ferry to Ko Phi Phi (no sea sickness yet thanks to ginger tablets and sea bands!), southwest of Railay. The 1 1/2 hour trip was nice--clear blue cki above and green water below, with sea breeze to keep us semi-cool as we passed little islands along the way. Our arrival, however, was not so nice...touts shoving brochures and pictures of resorts in our faces and guys endlessly asking, "you want boat?" (for those of you who are experienced at this, remember that this is only our second stop so its all [View Full Entry]

Hi! I'm finally getting to these...backdated this one since we're actually in Ko Lanta now :) Railay Beach We flew into Krabi early on the 5th. We splashed out on a taxi to get us to Ao Nang becasue we were really uncertain of what we were doing! the driver was crazy...Dan kept grabbing my hand as we zoomed up behing cars and motorbikes, barely getting around them to miss the oncoming traffic. From Ao Nang we took a longtail boat to Railay Beach, our stop for the next 4 days. Limestone cliffs towering above the beach, light sand on the [View Full Entry]

Nothing too exciting to report other than that our first two flights went fine, and we've been wandering around the Singapore airport for about 3 hours with 4 more to go until we fly to Thailand. We made the mistake of going through immigration right away, and since we can't check in for our next flight until morning, we're stuck in the "public" area...not too many shops or anything. But we did find a "cafe" with free internet as long as you buy an expensive coffee... Saying good-bye to New Zealand wasn't too bad...well, I did have quite a few tears [View Full Entry]

Our first real blog! We are finally heading off to travel, and we figured it was about time that we fill family and friends in on our plans thus far... We depart 4th May from Christchurch, fly through Sydney and Singapore, and our final destination is Krabi, Thailand. It's a little beachtown not too far from Phuket (where the Tsunami hit) where we will spend a few days lying on the beach, snorkeling, and rock climbing. It's supposedly one of the best places in the world for climbing so we may do a course for a couple of days. We'll [View Full Entry]
