Monk taking a break
We found this guy sitting in this window ledge at the top of Angkor Wat.
I wrote this nearly a month ago...FINALLY getting photos downloaded for it! Also check out the two previous blogs about Cambodia--we added a few photos for you. Nearly 3 weeks in Cambodia now...Dan's first blog was actually written on our second day here, and since then we have come to just love it here, mainly for the people. This is kind of a long one (Sorry!) but there is just so much I wish we could share with you...I'll attempt to share a few bits and pieces. We recently spent 5 days up in Siem Reap, northwest of Phnom Penh about [View Full Entry]

It's been a while since our last blog so just thought we'd let you know that all is well, and we're now in Cambodia. We actually arrived via boat from Vietnam about one week ago. We spent a few days in Phnom Penh, then headed south to Sihanoukville on the beach for 4 days. Thought I'd get caught up with these, but the big cushioned chairs, good food, good books, and the sea managed to keep us occupied the whole time...so relaxing there :) We head to Siem Reap tomorrow where we'll spend a few days at Angkok Wat. Details and [View Full Entry]

Cambodia is a country that has been rediscovered by westerners after the henious acts committed over the centuries and in particaular 1975- 1979. For those of you who have read the books or seen the movie (The Killing Fields,) I doubt that many foreigners understand or let alone know what happened to the people of this country. After arriving and settling into our guesthouse ($3.00 a night,) we decided that we would visit S-21 and The Killing fields of Phnom Penn. S-21 is a former highschool that during the years 1975- 79 (the years the Khmer Rouge had control of the [View Full Entry]

Backtracking just a bit...we've actually been in Cambodia since the 21st or so! And apologies for no photos...I wrote this ages ago, and I've been trying to download pics for the past week, each time with no luck--bummer. We'll try to get some on once we get to thailand mid-July! Saigon was a cool city for the 3 days we spent there. It didn't have the quaint feeling of the Old Quarter in Hanoi, but the people were lovely, the street food as tasty, and the cyclos and motos still asking us if we wanted a ride. People always asking "where [View Full Entry]

A good couple of days in Nha Trang...relaxing on the beach, Mama Linh's Boat Tour, and no humidity! We've attached a map of a journey thus far, both Thailand and Vietnam. (Sorry, no city names) We survived the long overnight bus ride from Hoi An. Dan found some sleeping pills that literally made his eyelids glue shut...or so he says! I think I may need to indulge in them myself for the ride we'll do tonight to Saigon. Besides the minor mechanical problems early on, the bus was fine. The only thing we couldn't figure out was why the driver kept [View Full Entry]

Well, well, since there were no negative comments I have once again been given the privledge of writing a second blog--thank you all very much. Heidi did have her doubts before I sent the one about Halong Bay :) I have recovered from my bout of food poisioning- after 1 month of travelling and not really caring in what I ate I was bound to get it at some stage, unfortunately it was when we had to spend a day on the back of a motorbike. A day of clenched bum checks and being worried about vomiting down the back of [View Full Entry]

The primary mean of transportation for locals in Vietnam is the motorbike, and today we experienced it first hand for more then just a few kms. It was a great trip, definately got us out seeing more of the countryside and local spots than we would see from a bus window, and overall, was enjoyable and unique. Dan's perspective might be slightly differernt than mine...Dan's feeling a bit under the weather as something he ate ysterday is not agreeing with him...nothing serious, but definately made the day on the bike a bit longer for him--he was a trooper though! First, catch [View Full Entry]

We sat out on our balcony and watched the world rush by. (Note the Vietnamese flag that is displayed EVERYWHERE)
We still have yet to get the blogs up about Halong Bay and Sapa...they're in the works... Just wanted to give a short update! We got back from Sapa yesterday morning around 5am, and even that early, the heat and humidity were in full swing. We had to wait around for a couple of hours until we could even find an open hotel, then Dan took turns checking out the selection of rooms...he's loving the bargaining behind everything from rooms to motorbikes to souvies :) We found a place a bit out of the way, but nice and cheap (City Gate [View Full Entry]

This is backtracking on our journey a bit, but we're finally getting this posted :) Be sure to check out the new photos on the Cruising China Seas/Wet and Wild entries, too! Sapa was one of our favorite places we've visited thus far on our travels. It is a small town in northwest Vietnam, settled in a little valley up in the mountains not too far from the Chinese border. The clouds often roll in low, giving the town a mistical effect. Small villages around Sapa are home to several different hill tribe people, each with their unique traditions and dresss. Heidi has finally given me permission to write a blog, so bare with me when it comes to spelling and grammer--I sold Coca Cola, I didn't write grant proposals! Well, we decided to visit the World Heritage site of Halong Bay, it;s one of those places where everyone that goes to Vietnam goes to visit, and I mean everyone! So we found a travel agent, which is not difficult because every second shop offers some form of tour. We were told you 'get what you pay for,' prices vary from US$20 to US$250. We ended up paying $35US, that was for [View Full Entry]
