Long lie this morning.......coach pick-up not till 9.20. So we drove into Port Douglas and had a light breakfast. Rae's friend, Sue was on the same trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We left at 10 and arrived at the pontoon off the reef at 11.30. The upgrade meant that we were at the Agincourt section, not far from the continental shelf started. The first job was to get the lycra suits on - recommended to protect against jellyfish stings and also against the sun. You'll like the pics! Then it was into the ocean, in a large roped off area, with the flippers, mask and snorkel - it was tough at the start but I slowly (almost) mastered my breathing through the snorkel. Rae managed to get in as well - it was something else ... read more

Hi, all. Updated yesterday's blog if you haven't seen it. Not sure where I finished.......was doing it at Sydney Airport when Rae said "I don't believe it", as she spotted Sue Reeve and her husband, Mick. Bizarre coincidence, Sue and Rae had worked at Copleston at the same time .......and now do lunches together, with Annie Skinner. We were on the same flight to Cairns! Might be on the same Great Barrier Reef trip tomorrow! Good flight to Cairns.....and we "got an hour back"' which surprised me. Picked up the car and headed off to Trinity Beach, where were due to meet Robyn and her partner, Jonathan - which we duly did at Lunica cafe, by the the ocean. Robyn is Clare's, James' fiancee's Mum.We had a good chat for an hour or so.........Jonathan had been ... read more

Blue Mountains visit today.....also Featherdale Wildlife Park - will add details tomorrow. At Sydney airport awaiting our flight to Cairns........weather not looking too good up there! Back to yesterday.........set off in "overlanding" truck, driven by Troy, who works Mon to Fri at Allianz and drives at the weekend for fun! Took scenic route out of Sydney and passed the 2000 Olympic site which still seems to be used extensively. Headed up into the hills. Our first stop was at the Mt. Portal lookout where we had great views of the Cumberland Plains stretching out before us. Weather was partially cloudy but warm. Had a tea/coffee break complete with "Anzacs" (a traditional oat and coconut biscuit) and Lammington (a reworked sponge!).............and some "long drop" toilets. We then headed for Jamison Valley a distant view of the 3 ... read more

Waiting to do the bridge climb..........lovely day, sunny, 21 degrees, not a lot of wind (outside!).....no nerves, says Rae. Take off in 30 mins! We did it.......interesting process getting kitted out......they think of everything, even the things for ensuring that you don't lose your glasses. Then there is the test climb! Surprise, surprise there are a few ladders to scale and steps to go up. But they don't rush you. I guess that we were on the bridge for a couple of hours and there is pretty much non-stop commentary on its construction and what you can see around you - we spotted bride being photographed in the gardens below, saw a sea-plane flying beneath us. Fabulous views of the city and the Opera House. Rae was very brave (she's not keen on heights......but the 2 ... read more

Lost last night's text..........2 blogs for the price of 1 today! Left idyllic Tasmania yesterday after a very enjoyable 10 days with James and Clare. James took us to the airport while Clare returned to work. Smooth flight to Sydney but don't know how we or our luggage survived the journey on the shuttle bus from the airport........manic driver who threw everyone's luggage around as if it was confetti! And he had the cheek to put a box out for tips - dream on! Went for a bit of an explore and found out where we were getting picked up for sightseeing trips today. On the way back we got caught in an amazing thunder and lightning storm.....continuous claps of thunder and flashes of lightning that lasted 30 mins or so. We came across St. Mary's ... read more

Our last full day in Tassie! Went for a run, to Blackman's Bay......more tough hills. Then had a swim.......beautiful day again, forecast to get up to 30. Clare took us to the Tasmanian Royal Botanic Gardens, where James was doing his course.........a good place to learn about horticulture! Lovely gardens.......especially the Japanese one. James had been given his homework - learning the botanical Latin names for 100 plants/trees/shrubs etc. We also met the Mr. And Mrs. T, who were passengers with James and Hatter on the the inaugural Overlanding West Africa trip........seasoned travellers, although they've never got further than Coventry in England. James and I went for a swim when we got back while Clare and Rae went for a paddle.......very refreshing. Nick and Jacqui came round to say cheerio.........maybe we'll see them in Spain some ... read more

Another lovely day here in Tasmania.........caught the bus into Hobart. Boarded the Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) ferry - the Mona Roma! On board, there are sheep (not real ones!) that you can sit on. I'm convinced that the name was thought up by a mischievous Scotsman........"Mona a big ferry and a cannae get aff"! Pleasant sail up the River Derwent to the Museum which was underwhelming at first sight. Probably because there is more of it under ground than there is above it. Unusual entrance surrounded by a tennis court, trampoline, rusty statue of a cement mixer etc. Ultra-modern inside, though with a see-through lift shaft, some amazing cliff-like walls and so on. Extensive range of exhibits ranging from the interesting to the clever to the bizarre to the downright weird (in my ... read more

Back at Kingston Beach now........had a great couple of days up at Freychinet National Park. Managed to find an RC mass at the local "community church" in Bicheno - only happens once every 4 weeks". We had a peripatetic priest who covered quite a wide parish. We then bought some picnic lunch stuff and headed off for Freycinet, about 30 mins drive away. Then we set off on our 11 kilometre walk up one of the Hazards to the Wineglass Bay lookout, then down to the beach at Wineglass Bay, then over to Great Oyster Bay where we had our lunch sitting on the beach looking at Refuge Island, and then back to the start. It took us about 4.5 hours, including various stops and lunch. There was a "beach" wallaby at Wineglass Bay, complete with ... read more

Hi. Beautiful day here today. The four of us went to Salamanca Market in Hobart. Terrific local wood products, very good buskers, lots of people - a happening place! Then James and Clare drove us up to via Orford........not the Suffolk one. Lovely chalet accommodation...........dumped our stuff and went for a walk along the beach........James and I went in for a swim. Ate at Sea Life.........I actually tasted an oyster. Not sure I'd have another one. The pavlova with banana and butterscotch sauce and ice cream was excellent though! Went penguin spotting again, with more luck this. Two wandered up the path we were on on the way to their nests, passing within a few inches of us. Off to Wineglass Bay tomorrow for a 10k trek.... read more

James and I went for a run this morning..........mixture of road, track and beach complete with a couple of killer hills. Beautiful morning........went across the road for a swim afterwards......a bit chilly, but we did it! See pics of house and views across the road. James and I played golf this afternoon at Kingston Beach Golf Club with Nick.....only 13 holes out of the eighteen, called the chicken run for some reason. Very fast greens, great bird life and a very interesting travelator/escalator/lift sort of thing to get you up from 17th green to the 18th tee! I've not mentioned how I played yet........we all had our moments but, for all sorts of reasons (excuses), mine were fewer than Nick's or James'........different clubs, too many screeching cockatoos, too bright sunlight etc. Nick and Jacqui came over ... read more
