Back at James........got back from Bruny about 16.30. Had a lot of rain during the night but it had eased off by the tine we were up. Had a great breakfast delivered by the 43 Degrees folk. Most of us went for walk before our Wilderness Cruise and were rewarded by more wallabies, including albino ones - unfortunately I had only my phone camera. Went off on our Pennnicott cruise at 11, by which time the weather was fine. We were first on the jetty and one of the tour leaders recognised Scottish accents and told me her grandfather was from Glasgow and had emigrated to Melbourne. The trip was amazing - see pics. Some amazing cliff formations (jurassic dolorite!), blowholes, cormorants, seals, gannets, albatrosses and went sailing in a wild Southern Ocean........in particularly weird but ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Bruny Island February 26th 2014

Limited internet access......a few pics for now......... Thursday now........yesterday Rae I, James and Clare, and Ant (an Aussie friend of James and Clare from the Overlanding West Africa trip) headed off down to Kettering to catch the ferry to Bruny Island ( the size as Singapore apparently but with 600 inhabitants versus Singapore's 6,000,0000!). North Bruny is connected to South Bruny by an isthmus, a very narrow one. We stopped off at the Bruny Island Cheese Company and tasted and bought some cheese - only Clare, however, liked the really smelly, runny one. We then went to the penguin lookout for some pics (we returned later too) - had to climb 365 (more) steps! Went to our accommodation in Adventure Bay, 43 Degrees, a very eco-friendly place and very pleasant, close to where we pick up ... read more

Back again, folks. Flew into Hobart yesterday from Melbourne. James and Clare met us at the airport and took us to their beach-side (temporary) home - just across the road from the Derwent Estuary. Then we headed up to our temp accommodation at Nick's (Ant had ousted us at James') and we all ate there. Nick (Clare's dad) is an artist and he showed us his studio complete with work-in-progressive paintings. He's working on a commission valued at A10000 dollars! There is a lovely view over the Derwent from the house. Today we headed up Mt. Wellington, 4000 feet up. We did drive, though. Pretty windy at the top (understatement!). Awesome views! Stopped off at the Cascade Brewery before we went in to Hobart and had lunch at the waterfront. Temperature got up to 28. Returned ... read more

Went for a run along the banks of the Yarra River this morning ...........and got back without taking any wrong turnings! Had a swim in the pool after. Rae "gym'd" and swam. Went to mass in St. Augustine's church. I reckon that the church back home could learn a thing or two from the guys out here - the churches are busy ( all ages, not just old fogies like us!!), lively, got various community projects going on, have modern choirs; basically make it an enjoyable experience. Then we took a stroll up to the Victoria Market, pretty large with all sorts of stuff on offer from food to clothes to Australian souvenirs to toys. Visited the State Library and saw Ned Kelly's - or was it Mick Jagger's - coat of armour. Great building. See ... read more

Up at 06.30 for coach pick-up at 07.15! Interesting coach tour with a very entertaining driver/guide called Roger. Took us all over Melbourne.......CBD (Central Business District to eastern suburbs to Docklands to Port Philip Bay and beyond.........followed by a river cruise on the Yarra. Roger told us about the "dunny" (toilet) with the best view in Australia - on the 35th floor of the Sofitel hotel building where you can and enjoy the spectacular view at the same time. Would like to visit there before we leave! Attached is a pic of the Eureka skydeck, the tallest building in Melbourne..........interesting for several reasons: apparently the miners of Ballarat etc. used to shout "eureka" when they discovered gold (obviously very intellectual miners, as they must have done some Greek history; the top of the building is finished ... read more

Ate out at The Mallow last night in Ballarat last night. Helen's son, Doug, works there. Very enjoyable meal in a bistro/bar setting. Repacked our bags this morning and set off for Melbourne. Rae fancied going to the Neighbours set........at the other side of Melbourne.........being a good husband, I dutifully girded my loins and fought our way through the heavy traffic. To be fair, Rae navigated well and we went straight there, to be confronted by (friendly) security guard who is there to protect the normal residents when filming isn't happening. The route back to the city was slightly more fraught and we overshot our hotel, but recovered pretty well and got parked out front to unload and book in before taking the car back. We are on the 19th floor with great views over the ... read more

Did "Blood on the Southern Cross" last night. It was very well put together, starting off in the auditorium with some background before moving outside the 2nd Act (unfortunately it rained during this bit!) and then we were moved in sort of trains called people carriers to another area for the 3rd Act which included a spectacular hotel fire and a pitched battle between Government (British in the 1850's) and the miners (or diggers) over licences for mining. Not surprisingly, a drunken Scotsman called James Scobie started it all! Very interesting evening which end with a power cut and the audience being led out by torchlight! Went for a run this morning around Lake Wendouree in the centre of Ballarat......took me 11 mins to get to the lake.........28 mins to run round it and.........33 mins to ... read more

Got the washing done this morning, thanks to Helen's washing machine.........before heading off Sovereign Hill, reconstruction of An 1850's gold mine in Ballarat. Looks pretty authentic to me! We did a diggings tour, involving panning for gold, saw a gold pour where an ingot is made, went on a gold mine tour to get feel for the conditions that the miners worked in - good way to spend a few hours. May return tomorrow to see the Gold Museum. Popped over to Malcolm's who had a few (11) in his "back garden"..........but Rae scared them off! Going to see the sound and light show "Blood on the Southern Cross" tonight. Will tell you about it tomorrow........... read more

Tuesday..........set off from Beacon Point along the windy coastal road........stopped off in Lorne for a 15 minute break before heading to Point Lonsdale, as recommended by Helen. Breakfasted in The Shack in Ocean Grove, very good and reasonably priced. Had our first visit to a bottle mart (the off-licence, which is where you buy you beer, wine here). Spent a couple of hours on Point Lonsdale beach, walking round the lighthouse and along the beach before having a swim, or trying to have a swim in the crashing surf. Rae missed out on the last activity! Reached Ballarat about 16.30 and caught up with Helen and Malcolm before Helen took us for a ride round the town (attractive space with lovely lake and nice "old" buildings). Then we had some very tasty homemade lasagne. The gold ... read more

At Rae's school friend Helen' place in Ballarat now.........starting with Monday's blog. After filling up with petrol (!).......Left Port Fairy and set off on the true Ocean Road..........stopped off at various "lookouts": Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, the Grotto, Gorge of Loch Ard, the Apostles ( there are less than 12 now). Breakfasted in Port Campbell and then headed for Apollo Bay. The last 30 odd miles were on very windy, up and down roads..........but was driving and I nodded off! Found our accommodation in Beacon Point..........named Ocean View. I expected to be by the sea - wrong. We were up in the hills..........and the vista from the balcony was spectacular.........after we negotiated the single track, 1 in 6 gradient to get there. Sorted ourselves out and went down into Apollo Bay, a quaint seaside ... read more
