03.10.2009 Going to the beach and dinner at Saad's This morning I had time to sleep in a bit and then I had to pack in order to check out at noon. I grabbed my bags and went to reception where I waited for “party Tamer” to pick me up. He called at some point telling me that he's stuck in traffic. The lady from the reception wanted to do a lot of small talk. She asked where I was from and what I did in Bahrain. And she wanted to know if I had ever been to India because that's where she's from... She asked about three times if she should call a taxi and I kept saying that I will be picked up soon. In the end she offered, that I could go back ... read more
02.10.2009 Bahrain International Circuit Today was the first race of the season at the BIC (Bahrain International Circuit) racing track. I knew that it was the plan for me to go there. What I did not know was that I had to go with Faisal. That would not be a problem of course if he wouldn't work at the BIC and would have to be there at 8.30am. The races weren't going to be until the afternoon and I could already see myself sit there, watch guys talking about cars and be extremely bored. Fortunately Faisal is the even bigger sleepy head than I am. When he dropped me off at the hotel last night, he said that he'll call me in the morning whenever he gets up. He only called sometime before 9am, picked me ... read more
01.10.2009 Exploring the desert Saad picked me up at 10am. Today it was time to explore outside of Manama. First we went to a Wildlife Park. Though it was a nice park, I'm not impressed about seeing animals in cages anymore after having seen them in the wild in Kenya. Of course I had to pose with a dromedary and I was excited to see my favourite animal, the giraffe. At some point a big bird was on the footpath. I took a picture and then walked around it. Saad didn't have that much luck. I heard him scream behind me and when I turned around, I could see him run away followed by the bird. I couldn't help but laugh. After the park we cruised around in the desert. We had a look at the ... read more
30.09.2009 Meeting the cousins I woke when the phone of the hotel rang. Before I had realised what was going on and was about to reach out for the receiver, the phone stopped ringing. I had a look at my watch. It was 3am. Weird! I decided to go back to sleep. I got up at 9.30am. I was not hungry at all and therefore decided to skip breakfast, get ready, call Saad and agree with him to be picked up at 10.45am. We went to the Beit Al Qur'an. It's a museum where you can look at an exposition of all sorts of Qurans from different countries and different decades. The Qurans were either very old, very big, very small, very expensive, very seldom, very beautiful... After looking at the Qurans we went to the ... read more
29.09.2009 Welcome to Bahrain Despite the sleeping pill I only slept about 3 1/2 hours on my night flight to Dubai. The quality of sleep was bad and I officially declare those pills to be crap! Usually I don't like connection flights because it means waiting time at the airport and boarding again etc... but this time I was really happy about it. At the airport I saw a lot of people lying on the floor sleeping. Looked like a good idea to me so I just lay down myself and doze away. An American girl woke me up, telling me that I shouldn't miss my flight. As soon as I got on the plane I slept some more. I was so tired that there was no need for sleeping pills of any sort. Just before ... read more
28.09.2009 You've got to be spontaneous I spontaneously booked a trip to Bahrain, an island in the Middle East. By spontaneous I mean coming home on Saturday night, looking up flights and writing to my friend Saad, who was my next door neighbour during our studies in Newcastle. I wrote the following e-mail to him "It's probably just a stupid idea and I'm probably not going to come but just in case I wake up tomorrow morning and feel like packing my bags... what are your plans next week?" He replied that he would have time, that I should book my flight and let him know when I'll arrive. We spent Sunday e-mailing each other and finding the proper flight for me, which I booked on Sunday evening to be leaving on Monday night. So here ... read more
22.07.2009 Going back to school When I woke up this morning, I felt terribly weak. But I had come here to study Spanish, it's been a dream of mine for a long time and I love the lessons with my great teacher Vivi. Therefore at least I wanted to go to school for an hour or two. As soon as I reached school I was welcomed back by everybody. My friends asked me how I was and if I was feeling better. I wasn't much in the mood for conversations about my illness, but it was nice to see that people cared. School was great as usual. In fact, I did all my lessons for the day. Surprisingly I started to feel better and better, the longer I was in a conversation with Vivi. That woman ... read more
21.07.2009 A day at home I got up at 7.30 am and forced myself to eat a piece of toast. I didn't really want to eat anything at all, but my abuela said that I need to eat in order to gain back some energy. I had planned to go back to school today, because I didn't want to miss a single of my valuable days, but I had to realise that it was not going to happen. I love to go to school. Vivi is a great teacher and I learn so much every single day. After letting the school know that I am not going to come and that they should inform my teacher, I went back to bed. I felt terribly weak and tired and had no energy to do anything at all. ... read more
20.07.2009 Going to the doctor Katrin was a real star. She got up in the morning, got ready and then started to pack my backpack. Not a big task you may think but for me it was a great relieve not having to do that on my own. We walked down to the entrance hall where everyone looked at me and came to ask how I was. I was not in a talking mood. I know I should have appreciated the sympathy but I just wanted to be left alone. On the bus I got a whole bench to myself to lie down, but the trip home was no fun at all. At some point we made a toilet stop. I had to queue but could barely keep myself on my legs. When I came back ... read more
19.07.2009 Being ill After a beautiful weekend in Semuc Champey it was time to head back "home". We had all pre-ordered our breakfast last night, so we'd get it faster this morning. It didn't quite work out but we didn't have to wait 45 minutes for it. On the way back we had to get on the pick-up trucks again for the bad road bit. This time I was standing up at the back of the truck. It was a nice ride, with a beautiful view and the wind blowing into my face. Back in the tour bus and a few hours on the road, Katrin complained about not feeling too well. At that point I didn't know that I was going to be much worse in just a little while. We had a bathroom stop ... read more
