House blessing Still no idea when Karl was going to get here. At this point I didn't care because it was weekend. K was off work and invited me to join him and his family on a trip to his sister’s house blessing ceremony in Chon Buri. Yesterday I had to check out at noon and since I was only going to meet K in the evening, I spent the afternoon on the bench in front of my back packer and tried to read. I have to mention that it was really really hot and therefore extremely hard to concentrate. At some point an Australian girl joined me and we started a conversation. It was good to talk to another traveller and exchange experiences. K and I met in the city. It's incredible how much I ... read more

Meeting Fabian Today I was excited to spend the day with someone new. I packed my day bag and had a bit of a shock for a moment when I couldn't find my camera. I thought that it was stolen or that I must have lost it. But then I remembered, that I had to hand it in at the cinema last night. I'm not used to that and had totally forgotten to pick it up after the movie. I walked down Thanon Khao San, trying to find Mc Donnald's - a spot easy to find - when all of a sudden Fabian stood next to me. I was a bit surprised at his hight. I'm really not used to tall people like him anymore and I dare say he's even rather tall back home. As ... read more

Going to the cinema The day was about as exciting as yesterday. Somehow I managed to go out to seven eleven and buy water but the rest was much the same. In the afternoon I remembered that the movie "Step Up 2" which I wanted to see should be shown now. I called K to find out if he wanted to join but he had Japanese class. I really wanted to see the movie and after nearly two days mainly spent in my room I realized that I had to overcome my fear of getting lost and get out. Therefore I asked for instructions and was on my way. Just before I left, Fabian called and we arranged to meet for lunch tomorrow. Things were getting better. I felt quite insecure but found the cinema without ... read more

Thailand on my own When I woke up I had a really strange feeling. K wouldn't come to pick me up, we wouldn't be spending the day together. It's not, that I can't be on my own or have a look around "town" by myself, but this is Bangkok, K told me that there is no such thing as a map, and I have a terrible sense of orientation. Honestly, I was scared that if I left my backpacker I'd most probably never find back again and be lost in this huge city forever. I felt really planless as what to do with the day. I had planned to travel with K for the first two weeks and then continue my journey with Karl. However, he was supposed to get to Thailand sometime last week and ... read more

Flight of the Gibbon I love Chiang Mai and it's a great place to be. The only thing I can't deal with are the mosquitos. I must have been bitten a thousand times by now and K just laughed and said "look, I got ONE too". So far I've had rather bad nights being itchy on every inch of my skin. I actually had a mosquito repellent with me (the best on the market, according to my uncle Felix) but it didn't seem to do the trick. Yesterday I've finally come up with the idea of buying a different one - quick thinking Fabienne! ;) - and this morning I woke up all relaxed for the first time since we got up here. Today, I was to experience an adventure I wanted to do for a ... read more

Day Off After two weeks of travelling I finally got my very first day off. I know what you think, I've heard it many times before "what do you need a day off for, you've got a really long vacation". At this point I'd like to stress again that travelling is not equal a vacation. Poor me doesn't even have weekends. Ok ok, I don't need you to feel sorry for me at this point ;) But seriously, travelling is tiring because there are so many things to see and do and I think it's even more tiring for me than for K because everything's so different and new yet very interesting and exciting. Anyway, having a day off means we've got nothing on our schedule. But we got a bit bored of just sitting at ... read more

Wedding It has been a short night. When we arrived in Lampang I was given a sheet and asked to spread it on the wooden floor of the house and sleep. Lying there I tried to remember when I had last slept on the floor and I had come to the conclusion that this is most likely a first. It took me ages to fall asleep. Not because of the lack of comfort I'm used to but because of K and his friends laughing outside and all the impressions I've gained since travelling seemed to occupy my mind endlessly. Furthermore it was really hot and all the mosquitoes in town seemed to have spread the news of the arrival of a foreigner. I was bitten again and again and I had no means to defend myself. ... read more

Thai dinner Have I already mentioned that traveling is really tiring? Well it is! Therefore it was time for sleeping most of the morning and then spend the afternoon at a nice cafe talking and reading. In the evening we were picked up by Tai. Together we went to yet another friend from work called Joe. His wife's just had a baby about a month ago and we were invited to go and have a look at it. It's Joe's second child and a really adorable little baby boy. I thought that we'd just go by, look at the baby, have a drink and chat for a bit. But it turned out that many people like his sister with her husband and other friends were invited too. When we got there people were busy in the ... read more

A night out the local way Today K and I joined another tour to Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangel north east of Chiang Mai. We spent most of the day in the bus for we had to drive three hours each way. We looked at yet another temple, had lunch and then went to the golden triangle which is the boarder between Thailand, Laos and Burma. Everyone was impressed by the view and they were excited about being able to see three countries at once. Because I live near a boarder triangle myself (Switzerland, Germany, France) I didn't think it was that thrilling, but it was still a nice area to spend time. Later on we looked at some temple designed by a Thai artist (apparently one of the most famous artists in Thailand and ... read more

Hot Spring Today K and I rented a motor bike. We drove for about one hour to a place south east of Chiang Mai to look at the Sankampaeng Hot Springs. The water of the springs is over 100 degrees hot. There was a swimming pool with water of the springs mixed with cold water. Needles to say that this time my cloths were off in no time and I was the first one to be in the pool. I loved swimming there although in some areas where the water wasn't mixed well it was really hot and it felt like you're about to burn. For some reason I couldn't help but think that the water smelled of eggs. I'd soon find out why. We got dressed and headed to look at the actual hot spring. ... read more
