28.03.2008 Karl
Ok, here's the story of Karl. Karl and I met at a hostel in Los Angeles in October 2007 where we happened to share a room. What an idiot! I thought. After he had moved into our room I did not think much of him and certainly didn't mind that I was way too busy to see much of him anyway. It wasn't until my last day when his charm hit me. Oh and what a charmer he is... He talked me into having breakfast with him. That's also where we found out that we would be in Thailand around the same time. We exchanged e-mail addresses and spent the rest of the day together with friends of mine.
During the past five months we exchanged a lot of e-mails and got to know each other better and better and I started to really look forward to travelling with him.
When I got on the plane to Thailand I wasn't sure how it was all going to work out because Karl wrote a few days before, that he would meet me in Thailand on 10th March but I had already planned to travel with K until
the 16th. However, there was no reason to worry at all. Karl kept changing his travel plans and postponing his arrival. Here an extract of his e-mails:
07.03. Leaving Oz on the 10th for Singapore
10.03. In Singapore, K.L. tomorrow, will be in Thailand on 25 March
13.03. Considering to go to the Philippines first, Thailand probably later
16.03. Philippines for a few weeks now, then F1 race in K.L., Thailand mid April
20.03. No Philippines for now, Ko Lipe (Thailand) on 28th March
22.03. Def. Ko Lipe on 28th/29th March
30.03. Not Ko Lipe anymore, Ko Mook now
I didn't really know what to think. In a way I understood that he wanted to make use of the freedom his open ticket offered him to go to other countries on the way but somehow I felt a bit fooled because we had been talking about meeting in Thailand for months and at some point it looked like it was not going to work out. I was glad that K had more time than originally planned and that I had the chance to go to the house blessing of his sister, which was very interesting to experience and
also, that my brother "hocked" me up with Fabian who was a really good travel companion.
When Fabian and I decided to go to Khao Yai National Park I was in no hurry to come back although I knew that Karl was supposed to finally arrive in Thailand. But hey, he was "supposed" to... and after all the changes, I had decided to no longer wait for him and just do my own thing until he actually confirmed his arrival.
So today was just one of my regular Bangkok days. I spent most of it at the hostel relaxing, enjoying the warm weather, not to say sweating my ass off. I was going to meet with Fabian the next day for a day in the city and studied my guide book in order to find out what we could do. At some point I also decided to go check my e-mails. And who would have guessed but there it was, the confirmation that Karl had actually arrived in the south of Thailand today. I was a bit unnerved by all his changes and since he made me wait for so long I decided to make him wait a
bit as well so I just told him that I had already made plans for the next day and that I'd take the bus down south the day after.
