We woke up around 9:15am Tuesday morning and met Emma at 10am in the lobby of the hotel to get some breakfast, since she works 12:30-8pm on Tuesday, where did we go??? Dunkin Donuts... we loved the bagel breakfast sandwich with cheese, egg and bacon and some donuts of course. The Asian breakfast of noodles or rice is not our thing. After breakfast we got on the road around 11:30 and headed west to see the other half of the island today. We drove for about an hour to the other side and took the scenic shore road through the small Korean villages. Then we went to Sanbangsan, a beautiful volcanic mountain, that has a large Buddhist temple in the side of the mountain along with many statues at the base of the mountain. We climbed ... read more

We boarded our quick flight 50 minute flight from Gimpo airport in Seoul to Jeju Island. It was up, serve you a drink, then land, almost like San Diego to Vegas for those of our friends in So Cal. When we arrived we planned on meeting up with Pete's friend from college, Emma, who he had reconnected with on Facebook after not seeing her for 8 years. We thought we would call her once we got to the hotel. Even better, Emma was waiving her arms in the air like crazy at us from the baggage claim area. I asked Pete " Is that Emma?" cause she was the only white girl in the crowd waving her arms at us. In the US this would be crazy but in Asia you can pick us out in ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Incheon October 4th 2009

One of the reasons that I really wanted to visit Seoul and South Korea was because of a new part of the city that was being built. I enjoy watching shows on Discovery channel and amongst one of my favorites is one called "Build it Bigger". I remember an episode where the South Korean government decided that they would reclaim a piece of land the size of Downtown Boston from the bay. On the land they would build a brand new city that would incorporate sustainable design principles, or more commonly known as Green building. For those of you who do not know I am a LEED Accredited Professional under the US Green Build Council. From the airport in Incheon a huge 7 mile long bridge was built to reach the new part of the city. ... read more

DMZ Tour..... most would say what is that? We thought the same thing and weren't really interested at first then our curiosity got the best of us. Since we are Americans we can't go to North Korea, but then again why would we want to. It is such an unknown area and also the government does so many cruel things to its citizens we learned more while in Seoul from fliers being handed out in the streets. We figured it would be a once in a lifetime experience and this is what this whole year in Asia is about. We learned so much more about the Korean War than either of us remember being taught in school. I personally don't remember much being taught about this war in grade, middle or high school. Unsure if the ... read more

First we would like to say CONGRATS to Pete's mom, Georgianna, she retired Friday Oct 2nd from Nursing after many years of service. We wished we could have celebrated with you but Enjoy Retirement and we are thinking of you!!!!! We started the morning with a "healthy" American breakfast Dunkin Donuts. Gotta love anything from the US when you live abroad and miss all the food from home even if we didn't eat it while living in the states. I have to admit living in Asia makes me eat the worst American food there is, cause that is the majority of what they have over here; McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts, Burger King(South Korea only). This was another lost in translation or lack of translation. Pete ordered a coffee and couldn't make up his mind, ... read more

We got up and had the best American breakfast since we have left the USA and it was at the Holiday Inn next to our hostel. I had an omelet and Pete had waffles and bacon with the best coffee, hmmmm. We then made our way to the bus stop that would take us the the Hong Kong Airport. All flights to and from Hong Kong are international, the only airport I have ever been to that is like that. I know Hong Kong is part of China but after traveling there I say "NO WAY" even more. The Chinese say 1 Country, 2 systems. I say "2 countries, 2 systems". First they have their own flag, 2nd they have their own currency, 3rd I have to go through immigration to get into Hong Kong and ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon September 30th 2009

We are writing these after we came back from vacation**** We are all packed and ready to go to Hong Kong for the evening then fly to Seoul, South Korea on Thursday, October 1st. We first had to go to Chinese class which was hard to sit through for 90 minutes when we knew we were going to HK for the first time and then 7 days in South Korea. We got out of class and took off for the subway. We recruited a few of our fellow teachers, Chris and Kelly, to crash with us in Hong Kong. Reservations for a four person suite at a Hostel had already been made. Crossing from Futian was fairly easy. We wanted to make sure that there were no delays or problems on the day of our flight ... read more

Today was a great day to feel a part of our school. We taught class at 11 then had our lunch break. I had to teach the first class after lunch at 2pm then the rest of the afternoon was National Day performances(school assembly). It was quite the sight to see all 3,000 student and all the teachers meet in the main corridor of the school. Thank God there is a cover over it cause it has been raining here for the last 2 days as the outer bands of the Tropical Storm that hit the Philippines is passing by us. No winds this time just rain. The Senior 1 teachers placed 2nd overall in the performances and were quite excited. GO SENIOR 1!!! After the school performances Pete continued to ask when we have our ... read more

We wanted to share a few pictures that we have taken over the last 5 days of our daily life here. We went to dinner with another couple in our program that lives in our apt complex. Then we walked through the park that is next to our complex and found the following: an outside gym and women doing what appeared to be a Chinese form of line dancing. Kathleen and I said we would try to learn some of the dances by the end of our stay here in China so we could participate with them. On Sunday after I taught we found a new restaurant that served spaghetti, sandwiches and pizza. We ordered the spaghetti for 12 kuai=$1.76, sandwich for 15 kuai=$2.20 and bubble tea for 7 kuai=$1.02. I included some pictures to show ... read more

This week has been QUITE the ROLLER COASTER ride!!!!!!!!! Are you ready to ride? Monday- We were told we had a note on our office desk by Cherry, very useful English teacher at our school, she said she had run to class and off she went. I went back to our office and found the following note. (picture in blog) It basically said that Pete and I both had to add 5 classes to our week of Senior 2(Juniors) in the near future. NICE!! We go from 10 classes to 15 in a letter, not even told to our faces. GOTTA LOVE CHINA. Needless to say we were pretty upset. Last week, we asked them to move some of our classes around so we didn't have big gaps in our day causing us to go back ... read more
