We wanted to share some of the CRAZY shirts, shoes, DVD's and other weird things we have found in China so far. We will continue to have volumes of this throughout the year, I am sure. Oh we saw the best shirt EVER but didn't have my camera. It read Herpes Schmerpes.... If you only knew that Southern China has a VERY high AIDS and STD rate cause the government didn't want to admit it, now it is out of control. Thanks to Kelly, our friend from Tampa, FL originally and lived in Chicago for the past year, for modeling the Doritos shirt. Get ready for a good LAUGH!!!! ... read more

We left the USA 7 weeks ago today and things are starting to feel like a routine, settling into our new lives here in Shenzhen. Wednesday, we started Chinese class again. Pete and I are in the fast paced Level 1 class. It is good cause it will push us to learn more and quicker, but I hope I can keep up with it and not let myself down. We had a quiz already on Friday and I did ok on it, I think. We have a driver from the 4 schools out here in Longgang pick us up(there are 7 of us that live out here) drive us to Futian District where are classes are held. It is nice cause we get there about an hour before class. We can socialize with the other people ... read more

We woke up this morning to strong winds, rain blowing sideways and branches down all over the neighborhood. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but LOTS of rain and gusty winds. I had my first class at 8:15 this morning and was hesitant to go to class. But on my way home it really wasn't that bad and the bus gods were with me cause they were right on time, no waiting today in the rain. I decided to go with the rain jacket instead of umbrella since the wind would probably blow the umbrella out. The weather was strange by the time I was on my way back to school today after my lunch break around 1:30pm; it was clearing up the sun was coming out and I wished I had ... read more

We found out today that there is a Tropical Storm/Typhoon headed towards our province in China. It is to make landfall Tuesday morning around 11am local time. (Monday at 11pm for Eastern, 10pm for Central, and 8pm Pacific). The winds are to get up to 75 mph. We saw the weather forecast on Yahoo that it is too be scattered thunderstorms and rain all week until Thursday but didn't put 2 and 2 together. The English Teacher, Samantha, that told us said school will never get canceled since the student live on campus. BUMMER!!! So we just get to get SOAKED while going back and forth to classes. The positive about it is that it has cooled off some!!!! It is not to be a direct hit to our town so we should be fine and ... read more

We had a great weekend!!! It started off on Friday 9/11/09 at the Teacher's Day Banquet. We were picked up by the head of the English Dept of our high school, Catherine, in her Buick. She drove us to a nice restaurant that was about 10 minutes from our house. The other Senior 1 teachers were calling Catherine during the ride there cause we were late, supposedly. Once we arrived at the restaurant we went to the second floor into a big banquet hall. The banquet room had about 10 round tables that had 10-12 people at each table. The VP of the school gave a speech in Chinese(no clue what he said) then others continued to give speeches and toast everyone. It is customary for the men to get HAMMERED at these dinners and the ... read more

If I knew what was going to happen today I don't think I would have gotten out of bed. It all started last night, Yahoo was acting up and I couldn't log in so I went to bed. This morning I woke up and Yahoo acted as if it was blocked. When websites are blocked in China they just appear as a blank white page and say done at the bottom. NICE!!!! now China decides to block Yahoo, when our program specifically told us to use Yahoo cause it doesn't ever get block. So not only do I have to be REALLY patient to use a proxy server to get around Facebook now I have to use it for Yahoo. Great way to wake up. I rode my new bike to the bus stop where I ... read more

As many of you have heard we have been having a few issues with our apartment. For example the gas water heater that hangs in our bathroom vents directly into our kitchen. It took several meetings with our contact teacher's boss to get these problems addressed, albeit with a school worker that had no clue as to how to fix anything. We also requested that two holes in the side of our unit be cover to prevent bugs from climbing into our house, or should I say even a large bird, I mean like a Tera dactyl big. Of course there were some complications with this as well. The workers first trip out he simply found a piece of paper on our kitchen table, it only happened to be a list of all the bus routes ... read more

Tonight we bought bikes to make our lives easier(or so we think) in China!!! Life in a city with no car and the only mode of transportation is walking or taking the bus is overrated. We decided we needed to simplify our trips to the grocery store by getting bikes w/baskets. YES!!!! No more walks with groceries in tow. Our Contact Teacher, Wilson, helped us negotiate the 2 bikes, 2 baskets, 2 front reflectors, and 2 U-Locks all for 550 kuai=$81. SWEET DEAL, nothing compares to this in Pacific Beach, CA. We hope there are no bike accident stories to follow in our blog over the next year. Check out our new bikes. Oh minor detail, after we paid for the bikes it started to POUR southern China style and we didn't have our umbrellas with ... read more

Happy Labor Day to all Americans!!!! Most of you are celebrating the end of summer or how you will miss summer, but over here in China we worked another day. Pete had 3 classes today and I only had one but it was a busy day. I left our apartment around 11:45am and got home at 6pm tonight. Pete had class at 11am then met me at 12pm for lunch at KFC(it is easy and we know we like the food). Then we met with a new Private English Tutoring school that is just opening. They are looking for Native English speakers and we were introduced by another CTLC member's friend. It is only about a 15-20 minute walk from our place or we can hop on a bus and it is 2 stops away. Gotta ... read more

Here are a few pictures that I took on the way from our apartment to one of the local supermarkets, Vanguard. They sell everything and it is 4 levels, they need to get the cart idea from Target how you can put it next to the escalator to go up to another level. It is always busy in there but today I found if you go before 5pm it isn't as chaotic. Enjoy!!!!... read more
