This weekend everyone in the USA will change their clocks back one hour. I have always wondered what it would be like if we didn't change the clocks ahead in the spring and back in the fall. Well this year I will find out. China doesn't do Daylight Savings and interestingly China only has ONE time zone for this HUGE country. How does this effect you, you are are probably thinking, right? For everyone in the Eastern time zone after you change your clocks we will be 13 hours ahead of you, Central time zone we will be 14 hours ahead of you, Mountain time zone we will be 15 hours ahead of you and those in the Pacific time zone we will be 16 hours ahead of you. As if it wasn't hard enough to ... read more

Well we have been back teaching for 4 days now and it has been a good week!!!!! On Tuesday, we were advised that our students have exams on Monday, Nov 9th- Wednesday, Nov 11th so we don't have to teach, that makes it a 5 day weekend!!! We quickly think in our head where do we want to go now, CAMBODIA!!! We have wanted to go to Angkor Wat since we left the USA(it was on Amazing Race last season) On Tuesday, later in the afternoon, Cherry, Pete's Class Coordinator, said that teacher's may want our classes before the exams to prepare the students more. Then on Wednesday Catherine, Head of our English Department, asked what days we wanted off in order for us to book our flights since we told her we wanted to go ... read more

Lots of pictures so make sure to hit the next button and scroll down to see them all. We woke up around 7:15am to head down for breakfast that we ordered the night before; 2 eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. The van was scheduled to pick us up from the hostel at 7:50am and they were on time. There were 7 of us from Panba Hostel that booked the trip and we picked up 3 more Chinese travelers at along hostel. Out of the 10 of us going to Tiger Leaping Gorge 7 of us hiked the high path and stayed overnight on the Gorge. Quick Fact from Wikipedia on TLG(Tiger Leaping Gorge) Around 15 km in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between 5,596 metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山; Yùlóngxuĕ Shān) ... read more

Alarm was set for 5:10am, but Pete woke up at 5:07am so we got up a few minutes early. We packed the night before and showered so we could just throw on clothes and get out the door. We turned in our room key and then we were out in the street by 5:15am. It was still pitch black outside and now we needed to get to the busy street to hail a cab. As we turned the bend in the street we saw a few people getting in and out of cabs. I wondered at this time in the morning were the people still out from the night before or just up very early like Pete and I. In Chengdu it is a known fact that cabs are hard to come by during busy times ... read more

We finally slept in, YEAH!!!! We ate breakfast at our hostel and it was pretty good for the Chinese trying to make American breakfast. It was our last day in Chengdu since we fly out on the 21st for Li Jiang at 8:15am. We took a taxi to the Wu Hou Temple. This temple was build in the honor of Zhuge Liang, the famous military and political strategist of the Shu State in the Three Kongdoms period (221 - 589). The name of temple comes from the fact, that Zhuge LIang was conferred with the title of Wuxiang Hou - the duke of Quxiang). The temple was first build in the sixth century. It was adjacent to the Zhaoli Tempele, the memorial temple of Liu Bei, emperor of the Shu Han state. In early Ming Dynasty ... read more

We left in the van at 7:20 on the dot from The Loft Hostel. There were 5 of us on the tour from 2 hostels; Pete and I, a couple from Montreal and a guy from Japan. As we arrived at the Panda Base it was around 8am, opening time. Once we got in our driver, who doesn't speak English, lead us around to the different exhibits. The main/ONLY reason we came was to hold/sit with the panda bears for 1,000 kuai=$146.41 per person. This is the ONLY place on Earth that you can do this. Yes we could have seen and did see Panda's at the San Diego zoo, but not as many as this place in Chengdu and you can't get near them at SD Zoo. We got to the the feeding of some ... read more

Gotta love our work schedule in China as we are off another week of work and get to tour around China. Some may think we have seen it all already but far from it. China is much larger in size than the USA so we have only seen a small part of China. It would be like a foreigner going to the USA seeing Boston, NYC and DC and saying they have seen the USA. Our Sunday morning started off rough, we got to the bus stop at 6:45pm which was when we wanted to be there by but... there were 2 buses we could get on the 327 or 355. Again it was 6:45am and I didn't sleep well thinking we would oversleep and miss our flight. Needless to say the 337 bus came and ... read more

Now it is time to update everyone what has happened over the past 10 days. First, Pete went to TWO trade shows, which he will update the blog about, so I had girls weekend at our place. Cali, Staci and I all came back to our apartment after Chinese Class on Friday afternoon to hang out for the evening. Cali and Staci didn't think they would survive the van ride back to our apartment since the school driver was driving very aggressive, like they all do in China. We have all learned to get in and get ready for the ride of your life. We went out to dinner not far from our apartment had a few beers. Staci and Cali are both vegetarians so I also ate no meat for this meal. The look on ... read more

We are excited for this week for Pete was told he doesn't have class on Thursday and he got his Friday class moved to Tuesday. He only has to teach 3 days this week, not too shabby. He will be going to a trade show in Hong Kong and a second one in Guangzhou. Keep your fingers crossed something will develop from these two visits. We booked our second trip tonight and we fly out this Sunday to Chengdu, Sichuan province. We love the Sichuan cuisine here in Shenzhen so we are excited for the spicy food there. Yes it is where the massive earthquake shook China a couple years ago. It is also famous for the ONLY Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in China and we are going to hold Pandas. Then we are flying ... read more

The alarm went off at 4:30am as we decided on our last day we would take the hour drive out to Sunrise Peak and watch the sun come up. We went down the the lobby to check out the weather before we made the drive and it said Windy each hour so we decided to go since no rain or clouds were in the hour by hour forecast. As we got on the scooter the forecast was correct it was WINDY!!! We made it out to Sunrise Peak in record time of 50 minutes and got there around 5:50am. The sun was scheduled to rise at 6:31am that day per the list at the box office. We started to make the trek up the peak that has over 600 steps to climb. As we walked up ... read more
