We were on the bus at 7am to take us to the bus terminal where the bus went to Phnom Penh at 7:45am. It was scheduled to be a 4 hour bus ride so Pete went to the corner market to get some coffee and breakfast, he came back with coffee, oj and 2 bags of M&Ms. In Cambodia they don't have muffins like they do in China so we ate M&Ms for breakfast-NOT GOOD. Actually we have been eating not so healthy since we have been in China and surprised my clothes still fit but they do. Little exercise due to heat, McDonald's and KFC for comfort food don't equal a healthy lifestyle, but now the weather is cool so hopefully I can start to walk or jog for some exercise. Back to our vacation... ... read more

Shout out to my Aunt Paulette for it was her birthday on Sunday, Nov 8th when we arrived in Sihanoukville. We arrived in Sihanoukville on the overnight bus around 5:30am. The cost was $20 per person, not bad for 10 hour ride. We got off the bus and all 20-30 of us were swarmed by Tuk Tuk drivers wanting to take us to a hostel or hotel. We didn't have a reservation as it seemed most of the others on the bus didn't either. After getting our bags we negotiated the ride from $4 down to $2, sometimes Asia is tiring in that you have to negotiate everything or you will be robbed of hard earned money. Pete had researched the Lonely Planet book to find which of the 5 beach areas we wanted to stay ... read more

4:50am the alarm went off since Sak was picking us up at 5am so we could see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. Very early morning with a long day ahead of us. 1st Temple Sunrise at Angkor Wat built in 1113 and finished in 1150 with later additions. Angkor Wat is the World's Largest Religious monument. As we arrived at the temple is was still dark out and LOTS of people walking with us to enter the temple gates. Sak told us once inside to go to our left so we could see 5 of the towers, if you stand straight in front of it you only see the front 3 towers. A tour guide inside told us the sun normally comes up around 6:10am but it was very cloudy so we were worried it was ... read more

We started our day at 8am again and this was going to be a long day. We decided to go to 2 of the more remote temples that were 49km=30.5 miles and 37 km=almost 23 miles from Siem Reap, where we stayed. We got to see lots of countryside and many homes/shacks along the way. I took a video of the route for about 2 minutes but it is too large to post to the blog(sorry). 1st temple Pre Rup built in 961. 2nd temple Kbal Spean built possibly in 11th-12th century this different than any other temple for he had to hike through the jungle for 1500 meters=almost 1 mile. The rocks were carved in the river and there was a waterfall. We ate lunch here and drank out of a fresh coconut. 3rd temple ... read more

Sak, our tuk tuk driver, picked us up at 8am to head out for a day of touring the smaller temples. Since we were going to be touring for 3 days we started out with the smaller more remote temples and worked our way up to the grandest of them all, Angkor Wat. Our first stop was Lolei built in 893. Not many people there and we got to see the detail of work that we would experience over the next 3 days. 2nd stop was at Preah Ko and last temple of the day was Bakong. Bakong was huge compared to the other 2 and it had a big mote around the outside. We were done with the temples by 11am and then had Sak take us to a floating village boat ride. It was ... read more

We decided to go to Cambodia the cheaper way from Shenzhen only $250 USD roundtrip from Shenzhen to Bangkok(3hr flight). Other option was to fly from Hong Kong to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, but we both flew cheaper than what the cost of one ticket would have been direct to Cambodia. We flew from Shenzhen, China at 11:20pm on Nov. 3rd to Bangkok, Thailand arrived around 1:40am on Nov. 4th, got through customs and exchanged money by 3am, in a taxi to the Morchit Bus Terminal by 3:05am, boarded the 3:30am bus(freezing from the AC) to Aranyaprathet, Thailand/Poipet, Cambodia border crossing, arrived at 7:40am and crossed into Cambodia by 8:30am. What a crazy night and not a lot of good sleep. Many travel blogs advised this is a SHADY area and to be aware, so ... read more

On Monday, I was honored to be a judge at the Longgang District Police English Speech Contest. I was advised by the school that it was ok to be a judge since the Police called to them for approval. One MINOR detail, Mr Huang who we dealt with a lot at the start of the school year, approved me being a judge but forgot to tell anyone else so no one was in my classroom teaching while I was being a judge. This is when we just say Oh China. The speech contest was interesting to listen to. It was to start at 2pm but started at 3pm then lasted until 5pm. There was one winner, two 2nd places, three 3rd places and 6 honorable mentions. There were 30 police men and women who competed in the ... read more

We survived our first Halloween in China. It sure did feel different since China doesn't really celebrate China at all. Here are a few pictures from our night out at NYPD a pizza joint in Futian, central part of Shenzhen. NYPD is owned by Thompson, Chinese-American, who is from San Fran, CA. Pete was very excited to speak to him about owning a business in China. Thompson said this year the rules changed and a foreigner can own a business in Shenzhen and gets tax breaks. Before this year you had to have a Chinese National be part owner, which seemed risky. We missed Staci and Martin for they were on a free trip to Hangzhou with their school. Also, Jimmy and Cali were in Hong Kong for the weekend with Mary, Jimmy's sister, who is ... read more
