For the first time since Brazil– so right at the start of the trip – I was to catch a plane instead of a bus! I was quite excited about it. Unlike a lot of people, I love airports and going to them. They’re not dodgy like airport and there is always the excitement of knowing you going somewhere. Going places – that is what travelling is all about and I love it. I was so tired though. Having been out the night before, I only got a few hours’ sleep before a 6.30am start. I wasn’t hungover though – thanks to the fact that I only drank beer the previous night. My tiredness however was enough to make the mistake of being dropped at the wrong terminal at Bogota’s airport – luckily the taxi ride ... read more

I couldn't wait to get out of San Agustin. I was so bored there. But of course, I would have to endure one more struggle in order to do so. In this case, it was a contender for worst bus ride of the trip. My thirteenth (!) overnight bus ride of the trip so far (and hopefully my last), I was just about over them. When I had a bus that stopped for just about every man and his dog along the road, with a girl seated behind me constantly kicking the back of my seat, a girl with a squealing puppy in the seat in front of me (normally cute yes, but not when you trying to get to sleep) and a woman with a screaming baby next to me, that was IT. To put ... read more

I was meant to spend more time in Ecuador than I did. First of all I was supposed to do a trip to the Amazon which I then decided to can; and second, I was meant to spend at least one night in Otavalo, just north of Quito, to check out the town’s famous market. However with no accommodation available the night before the weekly Saturday market – I should have perhaps been a bit more organised and clued-up about it, and should have anticipated this – I had to reconsider my plan. I could chance it and just go there anyway, hoping to find something once I am there, but I wasn’t keen on the possibility of walking all over town trying to find something and then having to pay top dollar for the only ... read more

Ecuador. The country's name evokes thoughts of the Galapagos with it's exotic wildlife, the Pacific coast with its pristine beaches, the Amazonian rainforest and its lush vegetation, banana exports, and this. This isn't the Ecuadorian national anthem by the way. But imagine if it was! In recent times, it has also evoked thoughts of danger and crime, particularly in Quito - where I was heading next. Another journey another overnight bus ride. I didn't sleep well again on the bus - a bumpy, winding ride, a lack of leg room and a rather large lady in the seat next to me put paid to that. Once in Quito, I took the EcoVia from the city's southern bus terminal into the city. The EcoVia is Quito's version of Lima's metro - a bus with a dedicated lane ... read more

From everyone that I had talked to and from everything that I had read, Ecuador sounded like a dangerous place. Overnight buses were apparently prone to hijacking and items have been reported as stolen from under your seat! I knew not to trust one bus company that had a lot of bad reviews including the drugging of passengers and subsequent stealing from them (CIFA - guess you can't trust any organisation with a acronym ending in -IFA) so I went with one taken by a guy I had met at the hostel who had no problems with them. And I had no problems with them in the end myself, as did Becca and Niels, both of whom were following me to Cuenca having met them at the hostel in Mancora. I didn't sleep great though, as ... read more

So I was on the bus to...Ayahuasca? Huacachina? Ayacucho? Or was it Huanchaco? Huanchaco, yes, that's the one, Huanchaco. Damn all these Peruvian names that sound the same. So Huanchaco, that was where I was going. On another Cruz del Sur luxury bus, there were no problems with the ride - all comfortable, all good. But this time I was travelling alone, having left my much-missed partner-in-crime Merian back in Lima. There were many qualities to like about Merian. Her easy-going nature. Intelligence (she is a medical student, after all). She was very independent. She laughed at most of my jokes. She babbled a bit sometimes but then I think I do too and that was perhaps the thing I missed the most - being able to tell someone whatever was on my mind, no matter ... read more

We weren't on an overnight bus this time from Ica to Lima, but it was still pretty hot and uncomfortable. Avoiding drinking water to avoid having to go pee on this bus with no toilet, I also felt a bit light-headed on the way there. Which may explain the state of semi-awe I was in during our taxi ride to the hostel. It was nice to be back in a proper city again - for the first time in over a month and a half, since I was in Santiago, I saw skyscrapers and modern buildings. It felt nice to be somewhere developed again. So when we arrived in the neighbourhood of Miraflores, I almost couldn't contain myself. Towering glass hotels and apartment blocks perched on a long stretch of cliffs with a number of very ... read more

I have never seen an oasis before. Can you imagine; a lagoon sustaining loads of life in the middle of a desert? With nothing but sand all around it? This was something I had to see, another first to tick off the list. We were on another overnight bus from Arequipa to Ica, courtesy of Cruz del Sur again. In previous overnight bus rides I have ended up almost freezing to death, so I made sure I wore trousers and a jacket this time. I even felt smug looking at the other gringos on the bus wearing nothing but flip-flops, shorts and singlets. The smile was wiped off my face about one movie (The Fantastic Four - distinctly average) into the journey. I was boiling. I perhaps should have dressed a bit lighter. Oases normally sustain ... read more

Arequipa wasn't my the original plan but then again neither was Merian. Having originally met her in Buenos Aires and then randomly again in Colonia del Sacramento, we enjoyed each other's company so much that we decided to meet up again further down the road. Having been a couple of weeks behind me on the gringo trail, Arequipa ended up being the most convenient place for us to reunite before making some tracks up the coast. I also got word about Huacachina - a literal oasis in the sand dunes outside of Ica. This was also on the route up north, I have never been to an oasis before and having missed out on sandboarding down in S... read more

Gringo ground zero. As the starting point for almost every tour to Machu Picchu, this is all that I thought Cuzco was. So imagine my surprise when I arrived and discovered how unexpectedly pretty the city is and how much history and importance the place has. Yes, the place is rammed with tourists and there are hawkers pestering said tourists for their dollars and soles, selling everything and anything. Just like in Bolivia but not as in-your-face and nowhere near as persistent as hawkers in Egypt or Morocco- but they are there and annoying nonetheless. Despite this however, in one of a number of curious contradictions about this place, Cuzco still manages to retai... read more
