Corfu is one of those beautiful and popular holiday destinations that'd you'd take your partner or family to for a well-planned summer vacation - you know, when you have a job, have money and are well-organised. Well, I should've thought of that before deciding to go there. First of all, it is August and peak season, so finding anywhere to stay on the island was a challenge let alone finding somewhere cheap and available relatively last-minute. I was lucky to get something a week in advance for 25€ a night on Airbnb. As this was my first Airbnb reservation, I did honestly have my suspicions about it. The host had no reviews at all despite having an account on the website for two years and was the only person of the five I wrote to who ... read more

The time had finally come. I've been needing a break from travelling for some time now - I just needed to stop for a while. And so I rented out my own apartment for seven days in the beachside town of Ksamil in Albania's deep south. I had been getting more and more snappy every day; every little thing - if it was annoying, then it was pissing me off. This included the bus down to Saranda from Berat. For a start, I found out that the journey would take six hours rather than the four hours Google Maps said it would take and I soon discovered why. It literally stopped everywhere for everyone and the driver seemed to be a transporter of goods as well as one of people as one dude put an entire ... read more

You can't really call Tirana's 'bus station' a bus station. There is no terminal building, there are no ticket offices - it is merely a parking lot full of buses. It is pretty chaotic - but then again I've seen worse. Anyway, it was from here that I finally left Tirana for my next destination; Berat. Berat's appeal lies in its impressively intact Ottoman quarter and its hilltop castle; while I had seen the rural, majestic mountains of Northern Albania and the urban, modern metropolis of Tirana, Berat now presented a trip back to Albania's Ottoman past. The cobblestone Ottoman quarter - with perhaps the most slippery cobblestones I have ever encountered - chock-full of white houses, lends Berat its nickname as the "town of a thousand windows" and a walk around i... read more

As we approached the junction where all the buses to Tirana leave from, we get accosted by man offering to take us to Tirana in his car for just 200 leke more. 1.50€ more for a ride in a new-ish Mercedes to Tirana? Sounded good to us. Or maybe that wasn't such a good idea. There is a theory that because Albanians only had access to cars after the fall of communism 24 years ago, that they are still learning how to drive them properly. I wouldn't doubt it. Many of the drivers I have seen on Albanian roads have been crazy and unpredictable. There is no adherence to any sort of rules, it's just a dangerous free-for-all. Dawdling is a common occurrence; cars just driving really slow without pulling over and holding everyone up. Even ... read more

For me, Albania is a country of intrigue. A rare majority-Muslim country on European soil and with a language that looks a bit like Turkish - and a language where I can literally recognise nothing - its culture alone promised to make it very different from anything else I had seen in Europe to date. Which is why Albania was the country I was most interested and excited about visiting on this particular leg of my journey. It isn't really on the tourist radar either - I don't think I have ever had a friend or colleague come back from vacation telling me about their amazing holiday in Albania. Rolling into Shkoder exhausted from the all-night party I pulled the night before back in Montenegro and with the Austrians Frido and Simon that I had met ... read more

I didn't learn from last time and so I spent all of my remaining Bosnian marka before leaving the country - only to realise that I had to pay for f*cking luggage again! Luckily I still had a 10KM note (about 5€) on me that I was going to use to try and change for euros but now that I had to break it, I wasn't sure if any bureau de changewould now take my Bosnian coins. FFS Derek. Again! But some blame must lie with the fact there is a luggage fee in the first place. Why not make things easier and include it in the price of the bus ticket like every other country in the world? I was on an overnight bus for a seven hour journey - so probably not long enough ... read more

I had done this journey before. But thankfully this time, I wasn't horrifically hungover for my bus ride down Croatia's Dalmatian coast to Dubrovnik. Along the way, there were loads of amazing coves and relatively empty pebble beaches; if you had a car, it would be amazing to be able to stop by at some of them. As I was leaving Croatia for the last time on this trip, I wanted to make sure I had no kuna leftover and so I spent everything I had on food while waiting for my bus to Bosnia in Dubrovnik. Feeling pretty chuffed with myself that I managed to spend every single kuna I had left, I then realised that I needed 8KN (£1) to pay the f*cking luggage fee on the bus. Why don't they just include the ... read more

I was now on my way to Croatia. From Rimini, I had to catch a train down to Ancona from where I then had to catch a ferry to Split - the same ferry that I had caught in the other direction nine years ago. Walking the one kilometre or so from the train station to the port, I did see a sign for "check-in" but for some reason didn't think that it applied to me. You'd have the check-in close to where you board the ferry, right? Not seeing an office for Jadrolinija anywhere, I then stopped in at a tourist information office where I was then told that I had to walk back a kilometre in the hot sun to where I had seen that sign. Luckily there was a free bus just passing ... read more

Sleep-deprived and exhausted from the last few days, an early start to catch my bus from Verona to Rimini probably wasn't the best idea but it was the best and cheapest option I had. So it was probably no surprise - and it has to be said that this is the first time this has happened for a long time - that I overslept having forgot to set an alarm the previous night. I then had forty minutes to get my shit together and sprint to the bus stop; a 35-minute walk away. So if an early start was the last thing I needed at the time, I now - barely able to open my eyes - had a sweaty, exhausting, 25-minute sprint across Verona to catch my bus. It reminded me of old times. Most ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona June 26th 2016

Most people know Verona as the city where Romeo & Juliet is set; others (mainly Kiwis) may know it as a song by New Zealand band Elemeno P; I knew Verona as both, but I had also heard that it is one of the prettiest cities in Italy - which is some statement - so I had always wanted to go there see what the fuss was about. It was another Megabus from Turin to Verona and only the stinky man in the seat in front of me took away from the ride, which was four and a half hours long. It was hot - mid 30s - but it wasn't the humid heat that I had gotten used to in Cuba so I could handle it fine during the half hour walk between the hostel ... read more
