(Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center) We arrived at Shocco Springs Friday afternoon to find fall colors just in their peak! At Carson Springs they had lost their brilliance, but here they’re still bright. AND we don’t have to rake leaves!! We’re parked in spots with trees surrounding us, and we’re on level ground~~two things you don’t often find at camps! There are six couples, and for the very first time, we’re meeting up with couples we’ve worked with on other projects….Mo and Leona from our September project in Michigan; Earl and [View Full Entry]

Happy Birthday, Lisa and Sara! We spent two days in Chattanooga on the way to our next project, and as many areas as we’ve seen, this is one of the most stunning. We spent the first day driving around the downtown area, and along the river, and then we took the incline railway to the top of Lookout Mountain. Marvin and Jackie traveled with us, but they only stayed one day, as they used to live near here, and have seen the sights. Of the three major sites we had planned, they most wanted to do the incline railway, and [View Full Entry]

Incline Railway
This gives you some idea of the slope.
We're in Rock City, on Lookout Mountain.

Here are some pictures I've gathered over the past month. The one in costume was taken on tour day (if you havne't seen the movie Fireproof, I recommend you go...it's a great movie.) After the movie we went to dinner, and then crashed the party that Trish (head housekeeper) and her husband were having for 25 teenagers. We didn't stay long! We will finish at Carson Springs on November 4, and will be moving to Talladega, just east of Birmingham. Gary and Sharon will be our leaders on that project too, and Marvin and Jackie are going there also. Everyone else [View Full Entry]

As long as they make the directions plain, I'll follow them.
Coincidentally,
My kind of church.

(Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center) I've been so neglectful with blogging since we've been on this project. It's not that there isn't a lot going on, it's just that wifi service is so poor up here that it's a huge chore. We're hopeful that the next project will have better signal, and what we're really hoping is that we can use the internet in our bus. We’re finishing up on our work projects…the guys have destructed all the buildings the camp director wants destructed, and have put yard lights in where they’re needed. We have finished the housekeeper’ [View Full Entry]

(Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center) Can you believe it~~same day, and another entry! It's because I forgot to publish the one the other day! We made an afternoon trip to Dollywood. It is all we thought it would be~~it's like an overview of living in the country. There's one section that is a country fair, with the carnival and rides and eats. There's another section that's country music~~blue grass as well as gospel. It also has stores to buy instruments as well as music and clothing. And a museum for country singers. There's another section that has a craft fair/flea mar [View Full Entry]

(Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center) This project is different from any other we’ve been on because it primarily caters to adults. The conference center (lodge) is very large, and is as fine as any hotel; I don’t want to say it’s fancy, but it’s not a rough environment, like some we've been to. It’s been around for a lot of years, but recently they began updating (restoring) it, and the results are beautiful. There is Camp Carson for the kids, but it’s not at all a rustic camp. We have six couples on this project, and, again, they’re a [View Full Entry]

We’re on our way to Tennessee. We spent the past three days in Louisville, and even with the things we’ve seen here, I have a fear that we’ve missed places where we should have stopped…there’s so much history in this part of the country, and so many spots that I taught about in Social Studies. But we can’t stop at every place. (did that sound like Bob’s voice?!) Anyway, here are some random thoughts: southern Michigan and Indiana grow mums, and ship them nationwide. My point is, there are so many thousands of mum plants everywhere. The plants [View Full Entry]

(Miracle Camp and Retreat Center) Happy Birthday, Heather! We finished our project yesterday, and three of the couples pulled out, which leaves us on this side of the camp and Willie and Sharon on the other…very weird after having others so close. Clara and Nic left last week to fulfill a family commitment. Everyone else is headed home for at least a month, and we’ll leave Saturday morning to head for Tennessee. I’ve had quite a reaction to bug bites ever since we arrived…seems that every little bite swells and itches, and then scabs over. The bugs aren&rs [View Full Entry]

How many guesses would it take?

(Miracle Camp and Retreat Center) What a beautiful week we’ve had, weather-wise and otherwise. The days are warm and sunny and the nights are cool…I love autumn. If you want to see this camp up-close and personal, and can't visit any time soon, please go to their website: miraclecamp.com They have excellent pictures of what I'm trying to describe. On our tour we went back to Shipshewana to go through the Menno-Hoff Museum. It tells the Amish Mennonite history, and also includes Hutterites. It was extremely interesting; the Amish broke off from the Mennonites, thinking [View Full Entry]

(Miracle Camp & Retreat Center) It’s a great day~~the rain quit! When it finally stopped Sunday evening, it was soooo quiet in the motor home. I knew the rain was loud, but I didn’t know how loud until the end of the third straight day of it. We got almost nine inches of rain in three days….I admit there were times when I thought it wouldn’t quit! But Monday morning we stepped out of the bus into sunshine. Wow, what a difference that made to everyone’s disposition! Saturday afternoon one of the camp staff came over to tell us there [View Full Entry]
