(Blue Water Covenant Bible Camp) This project has been different in the fact that we’ve spent nearly every weekend in Mankato with Megan’s family….what a treat for us. They’re only five hours away, which everyone up here thinks is reaaaallly far, but being from Montana we know that’s just down the road! That’s one of the reasons we requested this project. But it has meant that we’ve done less touring of the area, so you’re not going to get overly familiar with northern Minnesota from me! That said, I do need to tell you that it’s just gorgeous here right now; last weekend when we came back the trees were yellows and oranges, and two days later we went into town and the maple trees had started to change, so the landscape has added bright red, ... read more

(Blue Water Covenant Bible Camp) Well, from June to September; from Hawaii to Minnesota~~quite a jump no matter how you look at it! This was an exceptional summer for us, full of family and friends, and a month longer than usual, because we didn’t take a project last May. So when the end of August appeared, we were very ready to get back to real life. But first we spent a week in the Black Hills with our daughter Megan and her family~~nothing like seeing something so grand through the eyes of kids! From the helicopter to the bottom of the cave, it was all thrilling! (plus a tour through a Black Hills gold jewelry manufacturing facility for us girls, of course!) And then we were off to Grand Rapids, in northern Minnesota. On our way ... read more

(Dickinson, ND) A quick note, and then we’re going to take another look at Hawaii… Our bathroom in the condo was long and narrow, with two sinks. One evening I went in there and found a huge (I think it was about the size of a dump truck, but Bob said it was more like 3”) cockroach hanging out under the toe kick under the vanity. I screamed, Bob came running, and then we discussed how to kill a hard-shelled cockroach…I thought we should shoot him, but that was vetoed. Bob~~ with no shoes on, and no desire to crush him anyway~~ decided to trap him with the trash can~~that was nearly full!~~ so after jerking the bag out, we realized he (cockroach) was tucked under the cabinet where the can wouldn’t reach. Bob asked ... read more

(Dickinson, ND) It’s been so long since I’ve blogged that I hardly know where to begin. It’s not that we’ve been idle; it’s not that I don’t have news; it’s just that I have been too busy to write! Since we left Giddings, we’ve spent time in Mankato with Megan’s family, in Dickinson with Jean, in Sidney with family, and friends, in Billings with Lisa and Sara and their families, and friends, and we spent a week in Hawaii! Boy do I have a lot to tell you! Let’s just go right to Hawaii! We went to Kona (on the big island) with three other couples. (we missed you, Carl & Patti) It’s the first time four of us had been there, and we were excited to see, and the others were excited to show! We ... read more

(Brookhaven Retreat Center) I know it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged, and it’s been a very emotional time. Our dear friend Henry Norment (his wife is Annie…Henry & Annie...those names sound familiar because we’ve worked with them the past two springs) passed away suddenly at the beginning of this week. They were on project in Georgia when Henry had a brain aneurysm, which took his life. It has just stopped us in our tracks, and served as a reminder that we don’t have any idea how much longer we have with someone. Even as our hearts go out to Annie, she continues to minister to us through her emails. Along with that, we’ve been on two tours with missionary callings, and that’s been sobering in all that needs to be done in the world. ... read more

(Brookhaven Retreat) We’re in Hawkins, TX, this month~~about 100 miles east of Dallas. We are in the hill country now, even more than we were last month. Brookhaven is a camp situated on a privately own lake (Brooks Lake); the camp has one side of the lake, and private homeowners own the rest. It’s a smallish lake (oh come on, I don’t know how big!) with no power boats or anything like that allowed on it. Mostly it has men fishing on it. The camp doesn’t use it for swimming or boating any more, as it caused disagreements between them and the homeowners, but we’ve been cleared to canoe on it if we want. The camp has a large swimming pool, and a private lake. I’ll have pictures of that later. We have three on ... read more

Cotton Comes from Gin?

(Camp Tejas) We took a tour through a 100 year old working cotton gin! I’ve taught about Eli Whitney (1793) and the cotton gin, but really didn’t have the understanding (or interest!) in how it worked. This tour was fascinating! It’s located in a small (very small) town, and once a year they have~~are you ready?~~a Cotton Gin Festival! And they actually gin cotton bolls. Cotton was once the main crop grown in this area, along with tobacco, but now it’s only grown one place, and that’s on the garden-size spot near the cotton gin, and it’s grown for the sole purpose of the Cotton Gin Festival, when they fire up the 1925 diesel engine to demonstrate the whole process. We sat in on a demonstration in the museum and learned how the impact of ... read more

(Camp Tejas) We’ve been working hard on our projects, and yet it seems like we don’t get much done! (oh come on, you’ve had those weeks!) The first week we (women) finished painting the doors in one of the conference rooms, which is really a building! It’s the same one the men raised the roof on during our November project. Last week we moved to the woodshop to sand and prime boards that will be painted when they need them. We did this same thing in November, so you can check back to those pictures to see what it’s like now! I’m not sanding or priming, though, as I’m working to finish the signs that I began in November. I’d like to have them finished by the end of March when we leave. The two SOWER ... read more

(Camp Tejas) We are back in Giddings, where we were in November, and I have to say I feel like we’re back in the US! There’s a check station on the highways leaving the valley, much like the border crossing into Canada, where they have drug dogs that walk around the vehicles while they ask questions of us. Apparently two white haired people are that threatening, because they didn’t come in and look through our bus, but we could see cars pulled aside that they were searching. When we got through that, it felt like a different country, and the language on the signs is English (mostly!). Bob and I both are really fond of this area. We spent a week at the Village in Smithville, where not only did Bob attend the board meeting, ... read more
