Tuesday, 12th June 2018 Today is the day where we devoted our time and energy to the sights and sounds of busy Berlin. We started our sight-seeing plans in the city from 6am this morning. It was helpful that the sun rose very early in Summer. Thanks to the extensive S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks, we managed to cover 14 different sites within the city before calling it off for the day. The very first site which we visited was the Brandenburg Gate. This is the landmark of Berlin and probably one of the most photographed icons in the city. By now, the sun was rising slowly from the east and Berlin Tower was evident from where we stood. Beautiful! A brief walk from the Gate brought us to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. ... read more

Monday, 11th June 2018 We took a six hours train to complete the 573km journey to Berlin, the capital of Germany. Enroute, we had a decent meal on the meal cars where pork cutlets and dumplings were served. Arrival at Berlin HBF in the evening, we check-in to the Amano Grand Central Hotel. This was chosen given its convenient location opposite the train station. As I was tired out from the train travels, we decided to shelf our travel plans until the following morning. Berlin that greeted us was as busy and convenient as it gets given its extensive network of U-Bahns, S-Bahns, Buses and Trams. With all the sights we have planned for over the next two days, we were certainly looking forward to our short stay in the city.... read more

Sunday, 10th June 2018 The sun was bright and sunny this morning as we began our Metro Tour towards the tail-end station, Dworec Wilenski. Warsaw's metro is modern and efficient. There were little crowds on Sunday as we practically had the train cabin to ourselves. Next up on our stop was the Dworzec Warszawa Stadion Station where it commanded fine views of the Vistula River and the Most Swietokrzyski Bridge. The Vistula River is the main water body that divides the city into the eastern (new town) and western sections (old town). Breakfast was a simple affair of Ice Flat White (hugely recommended) and delicious muffins at the local coffee chain, Green Cafe Nero. Within its amazing decor, this was a perfect spot to while our morning away in the city. Visiting the Warsaw Old Town ... read more

Saturday, 9th June 2018 Spanning a total of 8 nights on our maiden Poland and Berlin trip, this was a rather ambitious itinerary we had assembled to take in the best of the World War II sites for our week-long experience..... Our red-eyed flight from Singapore landed at Warsaw Chopin International Airport on Saturday morning. This is a direct service offered by Polish Airlines as it made its debut in May 2018. At the airport, we purchased a very useful weekend transport ticket that would last us through 8 am on Monday. From there, we boarded a train service to Warsaw Central Station where our hotel was located. Warsaw's skyline is dominated by the Soviet-Style, Palace of Culture & Science standing proudly in front of the station square. After breakfast at McDonalds, we headed to our ... read more

Tuesday, 24th April 2018 Breakfast experience at JW Surabaya was great. The spread was sufficient and it was nice that the staffs tried to converse in Mandarin while showing us to our seats. What I loved was probably the decor which opened up to a bright atrium that allowed plenty of daylight into the dining hall. After breakfast, we paid a visit to the House of Sampoerna, a tobacco museum that documented the rags to riches story of the founder of the cigarette's brand. There were many interesting artefacts of yesteryears as well as a viewing hall at level 2 where visitors could have a great view of the cigarettes rolling and packing process. We had sometime before our flight in the evening and it was nice to spend our time idling at Cafe Tua Baru ... read more

Monday, 23rd April 2018 We signed up for the Bromo Sunrise Tour with Helios Transport in Malang and we must say that it was really comprehensive and well organised. The 12-hour tour began at midnight on Monday morning when the 4WD drove us to King Kong Hill for a glimpse of sunrise over Mount Bromo National Park. There were 3 of us in this tour including a tourist from Germany. The weather was chilly and when we arrived at around 3am and we spent some moments sleeping in the jeep while waiting for the day to break. There was coffee and clean toilets at one of the many huts leading to the viewing point. Given the cloudy weather, we did not have much luck with the sunrise even though the drive-through of the savanaah was probably ... read more

Sunday, 22nd April 2018 We woke up to an excellent buffet breakfast spread at the hotel this morning. What was really unforgettable were the local selections corner that was interesting, colourful and well-presented. Coupled with great coffee and hospitable service from the crew members, this was an unforgettable breakfast experience for us. After our excellent meal, we hailed a grab service to bring us right to the door step of the Bratiwaya Military Museum along the leafy Ijen Boulevard. There were some street vendors lining outside the museum on a Sunday morning which I happily parted some rupiahs for a Coke souvenir. The museum is divided into two galleries with military artefacts dating back from WWII. There was even a large section devoted to the ruling Japanese during the war. From the museum, we made our ... read more

Saturday, 21st April 2018 We took a Singapore Airlines flight to the city of Surabaya to kick start our East Java journey. Flight time was slightly more than 2 hours where I had Mavis Hee's greatest hits for company throughout the flight. Coupled with SIA's great food and service, this was an easy and comfortable journey for us. Surabaya Juanda Airport that greeted us is not huge by international standards. The arrivals is a short walk from where we landed and after clearing the formalities, we were soon on the road to the city of Malang, about 95km away. Arrival at the Hotel Santika Premiere Malang was a refreshing experience. The resort-like lobby and the welcoming pool was a stark contrast to the traffic mayhem outside the property. After lunch at the hotel, we decided not ... read more

Thursday, 29th March 2018 After a leisurely breakfast this morning, I headed over to the office to tie-up some loose ends before embarking on a T Bane (Metro) tour around the city vicinity. I haven't had much chance to ride on the T Bane over the past few days due to work commitments. So I was rather happy that we would be using the system to get to some of the places that we would be visiting today. From Majorstuen, we took the T Bane to the final station at Frognerseteren where we continued with a slow uphill climb to Frognerseteren Restaurant. The restaurant had its roots traced back since 1891 when it was first opened for business. It commanded a fine view of the vistas below since the building was perched on a high ground ... read more

Wednesday 28th March 2018 Today is my last working day of the week in Oslo office before the Easter long weekend and before I fly home on Friday afternoon. We had sushi for lunch today at the office cafeteria which tasted quite good actually. Over the past few days, our office lunch had been a hit and miss affair. There were days when the main dishes were mediocre in terms of look and taste even though I could always count on the reliable salad bar when all else fails. I left work at around 4+ this afternoon where I took a 10 minutes bus ride to Vigeland Sculpture Park. The sky is bright and sunny throughout the day which made it ideal for some outdoor activities. R reached 5 minutes later and we started wandering around ... read more
