New observations and realizations: 1) I miss ketchup. A lot. 2) Some people think that I am Costa Rican and are a little surprised when I’m not.. They all realize I am not from here when they hear me talk. They call me “Morena” in reference to my dark hair/complexion. Maybe it’s only when I am with blonde Ashley that I will be stared at.. :) 3) If every weekend is like the one I just had, I probably will never want to leave. 4) I am going to come home fat! Everyone just wants to feed me! Coffee, cookies, and cake! 5) Many Costa Ricans dress more provocative than people in the United States- if you can believe that. 6) I am always going to be tired here. I thought it was just jet-lag but ... read more

My first class, from 8:30-11:00 was Spanish. My professor is only 24 years old and has been working for this program since she received her bachelors two years ago. She reminds me a lot of Sam’s sister and even kind of looks like her. I think I will be able to survive this class. From 11:00-12:00 we had a meeting with the program director. We talked about stuff that has happened to us, school related stuff, and our first field trip on Wednesday and the following one this weekend. Wednesday morning we are going to someplace where they extract sugarcane and this weekend we are going to a biology reserve in the middle of nowhere for our culture class. I am really excited for the weekend trip, although I am already scared that I will see ... read more

This weekend I had my first bank experience. The banks aqui are very different from those in The United States. There is a security guard at the door who must unlock and open the door for you. Once you are in the door they use a metal detector and check your bags. You then receive a number and wait until your number is called. We waited about 20 minutes. There were so many people in there… Friday night was quite the experience. We went to quite a few bars and dance clubs. We started at a bar called “Los Secretos” and then went to a discoteca that played music that we didn’t know how to dance to at all- it was slow and kind of for older people. Then we went to another bar where they ... read more

This morning, since I didn't have class I got to "sleep in" until about 8:30... Never thought I would call that sleeping in. At 11 we went to the San Ramon festival. It was a big parade where the floats were different Saints. There were SO many people. It was a bit confusing for me because I do not know a lot about the catholic religion. Tomorrow is when the celebrating starts :) My host parents had to return to Guanacaste, where they lived for the last 3 years, to finish up some stuff. So, it was only me. When I returned to the house for lunch, I couldn't unlock the door.. I had the parents next door try to help, but no one could. I was locked out, with my lunch inside. Luckily, Ashley's host ... read more

The majority of Costa Ricans go to bed around 9 or 10 and wake up around 7 or 8- so not my thing. This morning when my alarm went off at 7, I didn’t want to get out of bed. Another cold shower didn’t sound appealing. Luckily enough, I figured out how to make the shower warm this time. In the morning at school, we went on a walking tour of San Ramon. It’s HUGE. There are numerous tiendas and zapaterias. Hopefully after 4 months I will be able to find my way around… We finished our tour before 11 and didn’t have to be home for almuerzo until 12, so we went to get a drink at a café and look around en las tiendas. American brands, like nike, forever 21, American Eagle, etc. sell ... read more

1.) My host family is awesome. 2.) When your host mom tells you to bring an umbrella to class every day, you should do it because if you don’t, you will get caught in a down pour and you will get soaked. 3.) San Ramon rain is not like rain in the rainforest where it only rains for a few minutes… It pours and storms like crazy. 4.) There are more shoe stores in San Ramon than anywhere else I have ever been. 5.) I am clearly an American and everyone will stare, no matter what. 6.) You need to watch where you are walking in the streets because there is a lot of dog poop and you will step in it. Como yo… 7.) I WILL get lost. Daily. 8.) Costa Rican drivers are worse ... read more

Dia uno: I had quite the experience today… I woke up to breakfast of Coffee, homemade tortillas, bread with ham and cheese inside, and watermelon. I had my first really embarrassing moment… A lot of words in Latin America do not mean the same thing as they do in Mexico, or the Spanish you learn in school.. I proceeded to take a cold shower, because I didn’t know how to make it hot. My host mom and I walked to school along with the neighbors and Ashley. On our way back, Ashley and I got lost for at least half hour- while passing our house multiple times. When I finally made it home I still had enough time for lunch and to talk with my host mom and host sister about my family, US celebrities, songs, ... read more

Finally made it here, around 11 PM after a long day of travel. My family is wonderful. My host mom made things so easy to step into and they are all so sweet. My host father speaks English and travels 3 hours away for the week to work and returns on the weekends. My host sister loved my gifts, or at least pretended to. I have my own room, hopefully I can make all my clothes fit in the closet = I have internet, but have to be plugged into it. It’s almost midnight, and I have class at 9- crazy. Saludos!... read more

I cannot believe I only have 13 days until I will be on a plane headed to Costa Rica for four months! As I am trying to prepare myself the best I can, things have been a little stressful and I am beginning to get nervous. Two years ago I would have never imagined myself embarking on this exciting journey, but I couldn't be more excited/happy/blessed to have this opportunity. Saludos!... read more
