This weekend I had my first bank experience. The banks aqui are very different from those in The United States. There is a security guard at the door who must unlock and open the door for you. Once you are in the door they use a metal detector and check your bags. You then receive a number and wait until your number is called. We waited about 20 minutes. There were so many people in there…
Friday night was quite the experience. We went to quite a few bars and dance clubs. We started at a bar called “Los Secretos” and then went to a discoteca that played music that we didn’t know how to dance to at all- it was slow and kind of for older people. Then we went to another bar where they played music that I know by singers like Prince Royce- my favorite. The final bar we went to was above the city and we could see all the city lights- it was beautiful. It was nice to have Ashley’s host brother, mi tio, along because he knew all the good spots.
Saturday we went to a waterpark and waterfall, “Las musas”. It was
beautiful. We walked down to the waterfall and hiked around through the trees on ‘sketch’ trails. There was a waterslide that I didn’t go on because it seemed a little unsafe. When you guys come to visit, I will be taking you here! :D
This morning I woke up at 5 to go for a run with my host- uncles’ running club. It was CRAZY INTENSE. No one ran overly fast, but we literally ran down a mountain and had to turn around after 30 minutes and come back up. Let me just say, it took a lot longer to get back than it did on the way there. I was running with a man who is a Professor at a college here in Costa Rica. He made me stop running so he could take my pulse and told me I couldn’t run until it dropped. My pulse was about 190 beats per minute… He made me walk until it went down. I think that if they didn’t go at 5 am on week days, I would run with these guys all the time. But maybe I’ll make a habit of it on the weekends!
The brother of
my host grandpa died yesterday (Saturday), so this morning we went to church. In Costa Rica, a funeral service is a part of the church service. The church was SO packed. There literally wasn’t even standing room.. After church, we went to the cemetery to watch him be buried. Interesting note: cemeteries in Costa Rica are quite different than those in the United States. Their ‘headstones’ measure about 4 feet by 6 feet and are made of tile with little room between each one.
After the funeral, we went to my host mothers’ moms’ house, where her grandma lives too. They were overly nice to me. I think I had 3 cups of coffee and literally 6 different types of cookies/cakes… Carb central…
Tomorrow is my first full day of classes.. I am pretty nervous. I was put in the advanced Spanish class- which I am not sure is the right placement for me. We will see how that goes tomorrow.
I am going to add a few pictures of my weekend 😊
