Today we decided to explore Udaipur’s other lake area. Fateh Sagar Lake. This is just above Lake Pichola and connected by a canal but not as picturesque as it doesn’t have the Royal Palace and all the other ancient buildings round its banks. We had checked which places were recommended to visit and booked a tuktuk with English speaking driver at the hotel reception. Have to say at the end of the trip we did not see exactly the places we had planned (I’m pretty sure we were going to Monsoon Palace but we never actually got there) but that is pretty normal round here and we have come to accept that where we say we want to go is not necessarily where we will be taken. In this case, true. So far we’ve only seen ... read more

Absolutely lovely to wake to the view from our balcony this morning looking out across the lake to the old town across the water. The lake is narrow here at the top and crossable by a foot bridge with another tuktuk bridge beyond. There is much activity in all directions. People chanting at Lal ghat, bells ringing, drums banging and most of all horns a honking as the scooters, tuktuks and taxis try there hardest to be fastest and loudest. Breakfast downstairs and then we set off to cross the bridge to the old town. Gorgeous day. Blue sky and sunny but not roasting hot. Just what we need to go sightseeing. We explored the part of the old town nearest to the hotel. A few minutes from the hotel via the footbridge to the ‘mainland’ ... read more

Up before the crack of dawn ready for taxi at 3.45. Could have had an extra half hour’s sleep as only took 15 minutes to the airport because the road was pretty well empty. Slightly chaotic moment as we entered the airport. First we show boarding passes to security on the main door and then cases go through the scanner. That is how they operate here, you don’t get into the airport until your cases have been checked. We were surrounded by an Indian party with multiple cases and it was all very disorganised as we queued for our turn and were generally pushed and shoved into line. There was a Swedish couple in front of us who were getting the same flight and the man decided to go off to check if we were in ... read more

Asia » India » Punjab » Amritsar February 23rd 2019

In Amritsar there are two main tourist attractions. Yesterday’s Golden Temple and the India Pakistan border ceremony at Wageh. We had arranged the latter for the afternoon so as we had the morning free we set out for another walk through the old town. Camera ever to hand and lots of things to click at. This place is fascinating. Nothing ever seems to get finished. Buildings are started but the windows don’t go in. Things break and are never mended or replaced. Some of the buildings along the main street the hotel stands on are, or rather were, quite ornate but not any longer. An astonishing mess if you stand back and look at it all. There are no parking places so there are scooters lined up everywhere and you have to weave your way between ... read more

We've been to India before. We've not been to the Punjab. My goodness, what an experience. The walk about last night was a taster. Today we got a full meal. A slightly later one than planned as we overslept, after our long journey with very little sleep and missed the hotel breakfast (served until 10.30 !). Our room is on the lst floor and looks onto a red corrugated roof on which heavy rain pounded a lot of the night. Hence the late sleeping. This meant we had not had any view of the city from our room so we headed up to the pool area on the roof. Pool not very inviting after all that rain but at least we could see Amritsar from above. Then down to the ground and we set off along ... read more

Three flights, as planned, from Manchester to Dubai, Dubai to Mumbai (both Emirates) then Varenesi local internal flight up to Amritsar. Left home at 09.00 Tuesday and arrived at the Ramada Amritsar 16.30 Wednesday... that's 5.5 hours ahead of the uk. We've left the car and the Meet and Greet at Manchester having taken a careful note and photo of the mileage as we've heard of vehicles being used by the staff while the customers are away. Security was a farce, We are delighted to see proper security checks carried out to keep us all safe but all we experienced at Manchester this time was chaos. There was so much attention given to totally innocuous and allowed items in everyone's checkin bags, about 50% of which were pulled aside and searched, that a whole gang of ... read more

It's been 6 months since we've had a holiday. Our usual September motorhome trip was cancelled last year as I was booked for a new right knee on August 31st which meant No travelling for at least 6 weeks. Summer had been very busy since we came back from the Swiss, Austrian trip in June. Hardly an empty day on the calendar with Bob's 75th and a couple of parties for that, a summer holiday visit from my grandchildren and then we fitted in a four night visit to Lisbon just before my op. Such a good decision and just what was needed especially with the wonderful summer weather we enjoyed. New knee now in place and working exceedingly well thank you. Not tried swimming yet and surgeon says no breast stroke which is going to ... read more

This is a two day blog as these have been mainly uneventful travelling days. We catch the chunnel tomorrow just before 10am so have had two days driving north to get to our favourite campsite in the area, Chateau Gandspette at Eperlecques, near to St Omer. Decided to do the biggest part of the drive yesterday which took us to Laon. A 6 hour drive which is quite long enough especially for Bob who bruised himself when he slid off the step of Tandy a couple of days ago. This makes sitting a big painful even after his bruise has been anointed with my magic arnica gel. We were sorry to say goodbye to our Stork friends who entertained us so very well on our Turcqheim campsite but have motorhome must travel and it's time to ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Eguisheim June 25th 2018

Lovely day scootering round the Alsace. Turckheim, as well as having its own lovely town to explore, is also very well located for visits to other Alsace towns. Equisheim is one I wanted to see as we almost did last time we were here. Colmar is also only a few miles away so have Kisbee, will travel. Didn’t rush to get off on our sightseeing as we are on holiday after all. Also it was cloudy and wanted to wait until the sun broke through. Equisheim first on the list and it is absolutely charming. Buildings dating from the 1500s, beautifully restored but with lots of interesting features to attract the eye in every direction we went. Of course the buildings would have looked nothing like this in the 1500s. 2018 style they are painted in ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Turckheim June 23rd 2018

It's quite clear once we start heading steadily Northwards that we are coming to the end of our trip but still 4 days to go. Time to stop off in the Alsace for a couple of nights. We left our lovely campsite in Lucerne in good time, gave the lake and Mount Pilatus a wave as we headed out of town on the motorway to get us clear of the town. Then a steady drive across Northern Switzerland in the direction of Basel. We passed a few lakes and lots of fields and followed a railway which ran alongside the road for a good part of the way. To get us past Basel we took to the motorway and found ourselves back in Germany which was a slight surprise (my map is small scale so it ... read more
