It's been 6 months since we've had a holiday. Our usual September motorhome trip was cancelled last year as I was booked for a new right knee on August 31st which meant No travelling for at least 6 weeks. Summer had been very busy since we came back from the Swiss, Austrian trip in June. Hardly an empty day on the calendar with Bob's 75th and a couple of parties for that, a summer holiday visit from my grandchildren and then we fitted in a four night visit to Lisbon just before my op. Such a good decision and just what was needed especially with the wonderful summer weather we enjoyed. New knee now in place and working exceedingly well thank you. Not tried swimming yet and surgeon says no breast stroke which is going to ... read more

This is a two day blog as these have been mainly uneventful travelling days. We catch the chunnel tomorrow just before 10am so have had two days driving north to get to our favourite campsite in the area, Chateau Gandspette at Eperlecques, near to St Omer. Decided to do the biggest part of the drive yesterday which took us to Laon. A 6 hour drive which is quite long enough especially for Bob who bruised himself when he slid off the step of Tandy a couple of days ago. This makes sitting a big painful even after his bruise has been anointed with my magic arnica gel. We were sorry to say goodbye to our Stork friends who entertained us so very well on our Turcqheim campsite but have motorhome must travel and it's time to ... read more

Lovely day scootering round the Alsace. Turckheim, as well as having its own lovely town to explore, is also very well located for visits to other Alsace towns. Equisheim is one I wanted to see as we almost did last time we were here. Colmar is also only a few miles away so have Kisbee, will travel. Didn’t rush to get off on our sightseeing as we are on holiday after all. Also it was cloudy and wanted to wait until the sun broke through. Equisheim first on the list and it is absolutely charming. Buildings dating from the 1500s, beautifully restored but with lots of interesting features to attract the eye in every direction we went. Of course the buildings would have looked nothing like this in the 1500s. 2018 style they are painted in ... read more

It's quite clear once we start heading steadily Northwards that we are coming to the end of our trip but still 4 days to go. Time to stop off in the Alsace for a couple of nights. We left our lovely campsite in Lucerne in good time, gave the lake and Mount Pilatus a wave as we headed out of town on the motorway to get us clear of the town. Then a steady drive across Northern Switzerland in the direction of Basel. We passed a few lakes and lots of fields and followed a railway which ran alongside the road for a good part of the way. To get us past Basel we took to the motorway and found ourselves back in Germany which was a slight surprise (my map is small scale so it ... read more

Superb day today. All to plan according to Bob's spreadsheet for our trip. One day to take in the special Pilatus mountain trip and to include a boat trip, train ride and cable car. Had been concerned last night about the weather as rain was forecast for later in the day and didn't want that slipping over into daytime today. Yes it rained and it was very cloudy when we got up, quite early, but absolutely dry again so we were hopeful the clouds would clear. First part of the trip was across Lake Lucerne by boat and the boat station was 5 minutes away, just past the lido. Nobody else waiting for our boat except a few sleepy swans and ducks. Arrived on time, to the minute, with Swiss precision and away we went across ... read more

Moved on to a another town, another campsite, only 15 miles or so round Lake Lucerne, to Lucerne itself. We were pitched up on our new campsite, Camping International Lido, by 10.30am. This is just across a quiet road from the lake with a rather lovely lido between us and the water. Campsite is expensive. a - because everything in Switzerland is and b - because this is a city campsite in a very desirable location and c - because it is not ACSI so no discount. It is however excellent, has everything we need including good sanitaires, a little cafe and of course the swimming opportunities offered at the lido. Nice level pitch, Kisbee positively leapt out of the garage and off we went to visit Lucerne town. Only 10 minutes round the lake and ... read more

Scooter day today so went left from the campsite along the lake towards Brunnen. We went that way as it was the way we had intended to arrive but accidentally came in the other way round the lake. Also Bob had discovered an interesting place to visit at the end of that bit of lake, Schwyz, which is the originating town of the Canton and where Switzerland got its name. Lovely day but we were initially scootering along the lake, a little up from the edge and under the shelter of the rocky base of Mount Rigi. It was really chilly and Bob had to stop to put his sweater on. Much better later as we dropped back down to the lakeside and got into the sun again. A pretty drive, this is such a lovely ... read more

Fantastic. The weather has settled to a bright blue gorgeousness and we are in the best possible location to enjoy it. The backdrop to campsite is the beautiful Mount Rigi and today is the day to get up and there enjoy its offerings. No Kisbee needed as it was only a step down to the lakeside where we jumped aboard the red train on the cog railway to take us to the top of the mountain. Great timing, arrived at the station just a couple of minutes before the train, which runs hourly, departed and got prime window seats in a open sided carriage. Stunning views of the lake and surroundings as we climbed higher and higher up Mount Rigi. Nearer the top there are three or four station stopping points. One is the changeover for ... read more

Not quite sure which way we went today. Certainly in several places not the way the Tomtom was directing us. We got away from the Chur campsite promptly and were glad to leave it behind. Rather wished we had not bothered going a little out of our way to stay there. The railway trip we had planned from there for today was better replaced with a more attractive campsite for the night, somewhere else. Had to use the motorway to get us well out of Chur as it is just one big industrial valley, not what we travel around to see. The clouds were well down over the mountain tops as it rained for a while in the night but in places the cloud was so mixed with the emissions from the factories we passed we ... read more

Change of country today. So its auf Wiedersehen to lovely Austria and Gruß Gott to Switzerland. A very scenic route was planned for today’s drive and incredibly scenic it was indeed. No motorways though our road followed the motorway for much of the way. Due West from Innsbruck along some pretty roads, mountains either side but we were following the river valley so the road was pretty straight and flat. There were lots of motorbikes on the road with us as well as plenty of cyclists but no trucks. Assume trucks are banned from the roads on Sunday as in France. At Landeck we started to climb, and climb again as we were going over the famous Arlberg Pass. Using the main, original road, not through the very long tunnel. A brilliant drive indeed with some ... read more
