Day out in Innsbruck today and it was excellent. Super blue sky when we woke so Kisbee leapt out of the garage, all-raring to go and we set off. Took the main 171 road in, though we had hoped to find a quieter route. Not terribly happy being on dual carriageways on the scooter especially as at one point it even acquired a third lane but we got there safely in 20 minutes or so. Once across the bridge over the river Inn we were in the city. Along with lots and lots of other tourists especially being a Saturday. We parked Kisbee where we found lots of other bikes and scooters and went into the old part of the town. Could barely move for the first half an hour, as there was a wedding in ... read more

Today we drove to the lovely Austrian Tyrol, to Hall in Tyrol near Innsbruck. Gorgeous blue sky for a gorgeously scenic drive. First of all we drove along the lake, West towards Lienz where we could have taken a route via Italy and the Dolomites but opted for the Austrian Alps instead. Then to Mittersil, north to Kitzbuhel and St Johann in Tyrol. Last stretch was West to Innsbruck via Worgl. We went over mountains, round mountains, through a couple and were for almost all of the day surrounded by the most stunning scenery. Mountains in every direction, snow topped often, rocky crags, fields full of wild flowers, Heidi chalets bedecked with bright flowers, waterfalls tumbling down the mountain sides, cows with bells a jangling, deep valleys, ski resorts and chair lifts, villages and towns nestling ... read more

Somewhat irritated this morning to find that there was still rain about though last night’s forecast was for a completely dry day. The latest forecast, useless thing, was saying it was going to stay wet most of the morning. Fortunately it was wrong and we ignored it, apart from ensuring we had our macs in sacs in Kisbee’s backbox, just in case. Kisbee came out of the garage all-raring to go as it enjoys a nice flat road round a lake where it can get a bit of speed up. Some of the mountainous inclines we take it on are quite a challenge as between us we are up to its weight limit ! Had to return briefly, after we set off, to retrieve a sweater for Bob. On the back I’m generally pretty well protected ... read more

Heading back West today and pleased to see when we got up that the sky was blue again. The first hour or so of the drive was fine and dry and we had some lovely mountain views as we went along. Last night’s rather violent storm had blown itself away over a mountain somewhere. We took the motorway for the first 40 or so miles to get well clear of Graz and over a couple of mountains the easier way, some of that meaning going through tunnels. Then we left the motorway and carried on a normal road. Not gone very far when the low cloud we had seen ahead hanging about on the mountain tops decided to lower itself even further so we had a wet drive for the last half of the trip. It ... read more

Thought it was going to be a hot day today and it certainly was. By 10am it was already roasting and getting stickier by the minute. We got to Graz reasonably early to try avoid the excessive heat and through the day we were delighted when a few cooling raindrops fell on us but with the fantastic luck we are having it didn't actually rain while we were in the city. Fortunate as that long scooter ride back on busy roads would not have been fun in the wet. Bob had found somewhere for us to head to on the edge of the old part of the city so we went straight there and parked. We had a little 'walking' guide book and did our best to follow the route it said but to be honest ... read more

Woke to yet another lovely day. We are being very lucky especially given the frequent / daily thunderstorms which the weather forecast keeps showing. In fact not a drop of rain at all today and by mid afternoon really rather unbearably hot at 28 degrees+. Not a long drive at all and we took the scenic route for well over half way, a road which followed the motorway and often the railway and as a result went through several quite industrial towns. Bob had decided we need to use the motorway for the approach to Graz as the alternaitve road was an up and down, windy route. The motorway went through a couple of tunnels, really long ones 8 km and then a 10km. We had already prepaid a toll which allows us by number plate ... read more

Weather forecast last night said we would have rain all day from 8am. Woke to blue sky and sunshine and a forecast now for rain starting midday. Not a drop dropped until the usual 6pm downpour with thundery effects. Kisbee came out of the Tandy's boot. Macs in sacs went into the back-box as a precaution and off we went. Not actually quite sure where we did go but we visited a couple of pretty flower decked villages, took photos across fields to the mountainous backdrop and went a little way up a couple of mountain roads. First stop was "Loch Ness" which is the public swimming area directly across from the campsite on lake Putterersee. We had seen it from our side of the lake and wondered what it is. No idea if the water ... read more

Bit of a grey start to the day. We have become accustomed to waking to blue sky and I do prefer it. Makes much nicer photos for one thing. Not far to drive today, just East, half way to Graz. Bob only used the motorway for the first 10 miles to get us out of and away from Salzburg then he turned off on our cross country route. I prefer to follow the way we are going on a road atlas. Have several times been able to refuse the Tomtom’s request to take a little ratrun which would not be suitable for the Tandy. Checked the only map we had for Austria and it is a very small scale Europe map and not much use at all. Bob stopped at two Shell garages but though they ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg June 8th 2018

Today we had more of a plan for our visit to Salzburg city. This involved first of all stopping off to see the sights in the new part of the city so Bob had worked out how get there on the scooter. Harder than it sounds as the whole of the centre is a very controlled pedestrianised zone but the map on Maps ME which Bob uses on the tablet doesn’t show the roads which are bus and cycle only… and there are a lot of those. First stop was easy enough, to the Mirabell Schloss and more particularly, its gardens. These are really lovely, full of roses and formal planting. Quite a few tour parties as well And a wedding which we assume had taken place in the Schloss itself. Had a nice wander through ... read more

And so to Austria. Not a long drive, in fact so short that we arrived at our next campsite, in Salzburg by 10am. A pleasant drive with the mountains to the right and lovely rolling countryside. As we got close to the border Bob switched the Tomtom to allow it to take us on motorways so we could more easily navigate our way from Germany to Austria. And suddenly we had changed country, quite painless, and we were on the outskirts of Salzburg. Our campsite Camping Nord Sam is almost in the city but is green as green can be and exceedingly pleasant. Not ACSI so costs twice as much as normal but city centre sites as convenient as this are rare and this one has a pool to add to its delights. We stayed just ... read more
