Moving steadily further East and a little bit further South and ever nearer to Austria. Not too far to travel today as Bob had planned a visit on route and we didn’t know how much time we would want there. Our visit was to Dachau, to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Dachau is very close to Munich, on the North West side, so we used the motorway system to get us there. All very easy as it was signposted from a few miles away. Bob had already checked we would be able to park and we could, for 5€, though entrance to the Memorial itself is free. What a place it is. Incredibly well done in every way. No romanticising what happened here, just displays showing photos, quotes and factual descriptions. Hadn’t realised that places ... read more

Another day, another drive and another campsite. Bob had planned a cross-country route today and to me it was a bit of a magical mystery tour as he hadn’t marked it on my map and the map is very small scale with few road numbers shown. So pretty difficult to work out exactly where we are on the map anyway. Occasionally I managed to identify the name of a village as we drove through and I did keep the general idea of the direction we were heading which was mainly East and then a little bit South East. We bypassed a couple of quite big towns, Tubingen and Augsberg and successfully stayed mainly on the smaller, countryside roads. Drove through some delightful country. Lots of crops, all very green, sometimes flat and at other times rolling ... read more

What a lovely day we've had today and what an excellent decision last night to stay on this lovely campsite for a second day rather than moving on. The site is so peaceful that despite the number of people obviously staying here (mainly on the permanent pitches) 90% of the noise is from the birds. The birds start at dawn and carry on until dark. That is not a complaint, the birdsong is absolutely lovely. We got up at a leisurely, it's my birthday sort of pace, stuck my cards up on top of the windscreen and then Bob got Kisbee scooter out of the garage. Not quite as easy as normal as left side of Tandy is against the hedge and Kisbee has to come out of that door so he had to unhook electric ... read more

Another driving day today and another gorgeous summery one too. Woken by delightful birdsong on our campsite which says "ornothologists delight" in its brochure so no surprise to hear Blackcaps singing in the trees all round. Away in good time again and we set off heading pretty well due East. Bob had warned me there would be more dual carriageway than country roads today and we started on the N4 but didn't stay long as a big stretch was closed so we had to detour along country roads after all. We were heading basically for Strasbourg and so were quite a lot of other people too. Bob had managed to find a stretch of really scenic route up through the forest into Alsace and through some lovely little villages with the pretty colourful buildings typical to ... read more

Got off to a good start as we had a long drive, 250 miles-ish. Stopped at reception first to book in for last night on the way back as Gandspette is popular and can get full. Always handy knowing there is a full bread service at 8am outside reception which meant we started the day with a lovely fresh baguette for breakfast. Quite a lot of the drive was on dual carriageways, no toll roads but some motorway standard as many French roads are. We headed first of all towards Lille but bypassed the city itself and also all the other towns of any size in this very industrial area of France which follows the Belgium border. The route followed almost a 45 SE degree direction and when not on the main roads took us through ... read more

Today went like clockwork. Up at 6.30, showered, last oddments into Tandy, birds given a last meal of suet pellets and insructed to go find their own food for the next few weeks and we were on the road at 7.30am. Brilliant drive down, not a holdup in sight. It is school holidays so that could account for less traffic than normal. A bit foggy but no sign of the weather advertised as "risk to life" (Ryanair had cancelled all their Stanstead flights just in case !) In fact, such a good drive down that we arrived at the Chunnel terminal 2 hours before our booked train time of 2.20. Thought maybe we would be put on an earlier train but there were warning signs of 'disruption" and the terminal car park was chocker. Had our ... read more

The plan, Plan A that is, was to leave on Wednesday for a full 4 week trip to Austria and Switzerland. On Saturday Bob tweaked his back and was very wary of setting off in a 3.5 ton motorhome for an initial 250 mile drive when he couldn't stand up straight. So Plan B it is giving Bob's back a couple of extra days to recover itself and meaning he's been able to do the mauling about that he needs to do to get us on the road. So Tandy is now packed to the gills; the garden is tidy; the birds are fed and have been warned that when it's gone, it's gone; my Folksy shop is in holiday mode; my glass studio is (vaguely) tidy and all I need to do is switch this ... read more

Early start, woken by the shrill alarm clock, ugh. Breakfast coffee, mango juice and a cake I bought from the hotel pastry shop last night, for breakfast. Then down to reception, checked out and into our 7.30 am waiting taxi. At Mumbai airport we were well on time for our flight and goodbye to India and an incredibly wonderful holiday. Can't take Indian currency home so had an enjoyable time spending our spare change in one of the nice tourist gift shops then onto our plane and up and away we went. Short 3+ hour flight to Dubai, then the longer 7 hour leg to Manchester and home. Quite uncomfortable by the time we landed, and by the time we were home, having been picked up by Jane, Bob's daughter, was really pleased to be there. ... read more

One full day left and reserved for sightseeing in Mumbai. After our indecisive sightseeing in Delhi, this time we were prepared with a list, written down, as to exactly where were going. Plan A was a taxi to point 1, then another taxi to point 2 etc. Plan B soon came into play as we realised that point 1, The Gateway To India, was a good hour's taxi ride away and the taxi driver was quite reasonable in suggesting he might as well bring us back as well as it would be 1000 rupees there and another 1000 back. (We had sensibly checked the approximate fare at the hotel before leaving). Quick discussion in the back of the taxi and noting our taxi driver spoke good, understandable English we suggested he could indeed bring us back ... read more

That's the relaxing beach bit of the trip over, now to head back to the city for our final stopping place, Mumbai. Bob had chosen a nicely timed flight out of Goa, at 3pm, so we had a leisurely start to the day. Packed our cases, breakfast in the sun, a farewell to the lovely friends we've made here and then down to the edge of the beach for a read in the sunshine. The hotel restaurant by the beach has some well positioned sunbeds though Bob did regret his position later when he found ant bites on his ankles. Little creatures round here, roaming the sand but with an itchy bite. I had of course move my feet up off the sand so was unaffected. Checkout time and we were pleased to find that the ... read more
