As Mixy was all packed and raring to go all we had to do was pretty well get up and go. A shower with no heating on was chilly but soon sorted by the fan heater, last few teckie things like tablet and camera loaded into Mixy and off we went. Away by 8.30 and after an hour of drizzly rain the sun came out, sky went blue and holiday here we come. Down the M1, round the M25, a bit of accidental M2 before getting the M20 (sun so bright it was really hard to read the signs) and we were in Folkestone at the Chunnel port in just over 4 hours. 220 miles but that did include a quick leg-stretch on the M25. Checked in via touch screen and all automated. We had pre-filed ... read more

It's been a long winter. We always find them so which is why, for as many years as we can remember, we have packed our cases at the beginning of February and headed for the airport. Most recently Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Vietnam. Singapore, Istanbul and the last one South Africa in 2020. Covid put a stop to a 2021 trip and to be honest if we hadn't gone to South Africa when we did we would never have gone because by the time we came back Covid was on the loose. We've only holidayed in England since and swapped our motorhome set up from our beloved Tandy and Kisbee scooter to a lovely Chausson and a towed Smart Car aka Smart Arse. We had 8 weeks of motorhome holiday in 2021 all in England which ... read more

Packed up and ready for a speedy getaway. Smart Arse hitched onto the back of Welcome and we're off. Slow departure from the campsite because of the very (very) narrow railway bridge between the campsite and the road. Involved pushing passenger mirror in and then Bob driving through with me in front watching every inch of space on either side. Bob did it. He does has excellent spatial judgement. And then the slow drive to end all slow drives. Think every vehicle in England is on the East West road across Dorset today. No obvious reason for it, just sheer volume of traffic as they say. There was one stretch with 2 mile queue either side which was a coned off 'road works' 100 metres long ..no road being worked on though. We did a lot ... read more

Wonderful day today, our last before we leave for home tomorrow so even better that the weather so kindly rewarded us with another absolutely perfect blue sky day. We decided to drive round the country roads to see where they took us. Past quite a few stone quarries which produce the lovely golden Purbeck stone from which many of the houses in the area are built. Then we came to Worth Matravers, a stone village with a duck pond, a little village tearoom, thatched cottages and an obviously very popular pub.. We carried on along the road from there until we came to Renscombe carpark which was where the road stopped. We asked advice about the route to Chapman's Pool but were told the road to it was Really steep, even steeper probably than Durdle Door ... read more

Another beautiful day in sunny, blue-sky Dorset. Cannot believe how lucky we are being with the weather. Far better than when we were away in August. Sun top and shorts weather nearly every day this time. We headed out first of all to Studland Bay. This time to the East of Swanage. A massive, 4 mile stretch of sandy beach in a big sheltered bay with Jurassic coast, Old Harry Rocks to the West side and Shell Beach to the East. This is National Trust land so we parked for free in their carpark and went down the steps to the Middle beach across a very fragile looking section of sand dune. This is quite an odd beach. There are beach huts but they are set back from the beach in the dunes, then the dunes ... read more

A stunning day of blue sky, sea and wonderful scenic coastline. We were woken by the Swanage Steam train going past our windscreen while we were still in bed. Didn't wave as we hadn't shut the front blind and didn't want anyone looking in ! Headed west from the campsite first of all to Lulworth Cove. The route there took us past quite a large area of Army shooting ranges and we were warned of sudden Gunfire and not to venture into the flagged zones. We had heard some strange booming noises from the campsite the day before so concluded that it was indeed gunfire and we heard quite a lot again today when we were out and about. Lulworth Cove is beautiful. It is also extremely busy, the enormous carpark was pretty full. We tried ... read more

Woke up to the dreary wet morning we had been promised. Actually woken up to the sound of quite heavy rain in the night and discovered in the morning that some had rained in through the window we had left slightly open. Never mind, the sofa will dry and not complaining about a bit of rain. We have been incredibly lucky this trip and stayed remarkably dry. We hitched Smart Arse to the back of Welcome and set off to Fishbourne for the 12 o clock ferry. Bob managed once again to squeeze through the dreadfully narrow lanes where the overgrown hedges on either side scrape along both the sides of the van and make a frighteningly scratchy noise. I have difficulty advising anyone to use this campsite with such an awful approach road. Even scarier ... read more

Today we had booked for a ride on the IOW Steam Train. As a special treat I had booked for 1st Class which proved to be brilliant as we got the compartment to ourselves. Arrived nicely in time for our 11.40 triip from Havenstreet and the train went to Smallbrook, back again through Havenstreet then on to Wootton and back. This involves the engine moving from back to front at each end as the train is a pull me only. Loved our compartment complete with antimacassars, very comfy seats and the refinement expected in first class ! Spent my journey with my head and camera out of the window as I always do on train trips just pulling my head in every now and then when we went under bridges as didn't want to watch it ... read more

Another gorgeous blue sky today - so kind of summer to stay with us. Off we went for a ride in Smart Arse to Ryde. We had heard there was a Classic Car rally on the seafront there so headed straight for the Esplanade and sure enough there were cars aplenty. First though we went along the pier. This dates back to the mid 1800s and is the second longest seaside pier in the country. Certainly long enough and we walked 1 mile just getting to the end and back. It used to have a tram running down the middle but that has now gone but it has a wooden roadway to take the cars and pedestrians to the ferry station at the end and there is also a set of train tracks. Looking across to ... read more

We are being so very lucky with the weather. Lovely today and more blue sky as the day went on but not the intense heat of last week so really very pleasant. We headed straight for Osborne House in East Cowes. This is English Heritage and I had prebooked and used a discount code given me by next motorhome along.. with a 2 for one offer. Worked beautifully and very definitely cheap at half the price. An absolutely beautiful visit in every way. The house, both interior and exterior is a delight to the eyes. The rooms are wonderfully decorated, as befits a Queen's residence with fantastically ornate ceilings and paintings and exquisite ornaments and furniture. Throughout the house there are nude statues, it seems Albert was very fond of those. Outside the gardens of the ... read more
