Last day of our drive north through France. We have so enjoyed the drive that we have decided that our June motorhome trip will be spent in France and nowhere more exotic or adventurous. The lovely long straight N roads are such a pleasure to travel along. Must make a little correction to yesterday's blog where I said we went through Rouen en the way to Nonancourt. Nope. Rouen is between Nonancourt and Ardres but I'm writing this a month later and it was only when I checked my photos I realised my mistake... am not correcting yesterday's blog as that would send emails to all the subscribers which would confuse and it is quite enougs for me to be confused ! Bob had located a supermarket at Abbeville conveniently on our route so we headed ... read more

I mentioned yesterday that the sun was missing and only just visible through thick cloud. I didn't say that the cloud was oddly coloured. When we woke we found out what that colour was. Sandy. So sandy we could barely see through the motorhome windows as it rained in the night, not enough, but sufficient to deposit a good coating of Saharan sand all over everywhere. This was the same sandstorm which we knew had hit Spain a few days before and it had obviously been following us. Bob had to give the windscreen a good wash before we set off (and several weeks later once home he had to climb on the roof and blast off the full layer of sand which was still stuck on there). The sky was still a very odd shade, ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » La Chatre March 14th 2022

This entry will be brief... mainly because it is now the 21st April and I have half forgotten what we did on the 14th March but need to add my blog here so I can remember when I refer back to this when I am old ?? We had forgotten just how much we enjoy driving through France. Not on the motorways where I find it hard to stay awake and where there is little chance of pointing my camera at an interesting building or a colourful tree, but on the N roads. The roads which are easily wide enough for the motorhome to pass along without mishap but which pass through pretty villages where the building styles are forever changing as we cross from one region to another. Where we can pull up outside a ... read more

Packing up to leave our sodden campsite at Roses was quite traumatic and best forgotten if we ever want to visit the Bay of Roses again. Let's just say it involved putting blue plastic carrier bags round our feet to traverse the ground between the van and more solid stretches of ground. A collection of mucky towel-wrapped things stored away in the shower we set off to Roses. Bob in the van and me behind in the car as had to hand it back to the hire place, albeit a day early. First time I've driven on the right for a lot of years but an automatic Fiat 500 was not a challenge and we left it outside Autohire, popped key in the key safe, sent photo of car to car hire to let them know ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Roses March 12th 2022

Belatedly finishing my blog now we are home 4 weeks later.. What can I say about Saturday 12th March in Roses on the Spanish Costa Brava. It was WET. Actually it was wet all the way from the top of the East coast of Spain right down to the bottom and in fact the rain which really started in earnest that day (previous showers had just been practice runs) continued for about 4 weeks ruining many Spainish spring holidays. The campsite man had told me it hadn't rained for months and they needed it. i bet he isn't saying that now ! We were expecting rain, The weather map had shown it but it was incessant for about 36 hours. The campsite, which is rarely rained on has a sandy surface with grass in places. Sandy ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Girona March 11th 2022

One reason I wanted to stay in the Bay of Roses again was to visit Girona as have always missed it out before. Too far to travel there on our scooter from the coast but this time we have our dinky little Fiat Cinquecento. Only an hours drive south and a little inland so we took the quiet roads route and avoided the motorways. Bob had identified a big free parking area just across the river from the main tourist area so we went straight there and sure enough there it was. How kind. Girona is famous for its coloured houses which line the banks of the river and they are indeed fine and the camera thought so too. There are several foot bridges across the river so easy to get to the other side to ... read more

I've got a little behind with my blog but here it is at last, only 8 days later. Trying to catch up with myself now that we are home again ! Got ourselves out and about at a reasonable time and for once used the campsite showers. Well we did use them once on the last site but mine was cold so we've showered in the van every other time. The shower block here though is excellent and heated too. That is pretty important as though the sky is reasonably clear there is a rather vicious cold wind which means sitting outside is not an option and neither are cold showers. We arranged a taxi at reception which took us to the carhire place in Roses. Taxi was double the price of any we used for ... read more

A long drive today, longest of the trip and Bob really had to psych himself up as still not 100% right after the iffy food of Monday. Not helped by knowing this was not going to be an easy drive. Circumventing Taragonna but worse, Barcelona, can never be an easy drive and it wasn't. The countryside and views especially on the first half of the drive are good with high peaks to the left, west and glimpses of the sea to the right, usually mixed with views of the high rise blocks which fill the coastline. At first the foreground was filled with orange trees, millions of them but they gradually gave way to olive trees the further north we went. We filled up with fuel before we left Valencia and then hit the motorway. So ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia March 8th 2022

Had to take the hire car back today so decided to drive into the city, hand it in and then do some more city sightseeing before taking the bus back to the campsite. Satnav took us straight to the car hire place. So glad Bob thought to bring the spare Satnav with us. Our old one which we use in the car, as we have a 'big vehicle' version for use in the motorhome to hopefully avoid being taken down an inaccessible rat run. Handed the car keys in and grabbed a taxi from just outside to take us to the Central market. First stop the old Silk market (La Lonja de la Seda) as advised by cousin Gillian to be a place not to be missed. Indeed it was not. Wonderful building and fair oozing ... read more

Rain even harder today if that is possible so warm clothes on again. Set the Sat nav for Xativa which is about 70km away a bit inland to the south. An easy road again through the paddy fields as they surround the campsite for some miles then through orange grove after orange grove. We have no idea how the harvesting of so many fruit could possibly be done. There are lots of oranges and satsumas on the ground beneath the trees as well as on the branches which were very well laden with fruit. The ground under the trees is also exceedingly wet and the paddy fields now appear like lakes rather than just wetlands. We drove through a few towns until we came to Xavita for which Bob had set satnav to the centre. Like ... read more
